Cheryl Cole just said at 39 she's too old to have another biological baby. What's your thoughts?
I'm genuinely curious as someone who's nearly 38 I'm still trying for my first baby.
Can a healthy pregnancy be possible?
At 39 apparently half your eggs would be deemed chromosomally abnormal.
What's your experience on getting pregnant at this age?

Had my first at 39. Now have 4!

I had my first at 40, second at 41 and third at 43. All conceived the first month of trying and all healthy, no problems at all in pregnancy or birth.

Exactly this! Maybe she feels too old herself. Maybe she's having early menopause symptoms (I was at that age), maybe she has other health issues.

I had dd3 at 39, nearly 40. It had taken me several years to fall. Already had a 10 and 13 year old. For me, I wouldn't have had another, but may well have if no 3 had arrived a few years earlier

I've only got one (she's 14) and the thought of doing it all again early 40s is terrifying. And very very tiring

I had mine at 24 and 26, 39 would absolutely feel too old for me. I think that's what she's saying, for her personally, it's too old.

My mum had me her first dc at 34, she tried for another baby after but was then in early menopause
She always has told me this and advised I may or may not face the same problems but she wishes she had started having babies earlier but went into the menopause earlier than she anticipated

I had my first dc at 24 and my second DC at 29. Financially I think we are done having babies and I'm early 30's

If Cheryl has fertility problems or early menopause etc then yes 39 may be too old for HER, or perhaps that's just her opinion on her own body- I don't think she is saying it's too old for anyone else!

I dont want to risk having a child with health issues, we will obviously find it very difficult. I dont want to take the chance.

I think it's different for everyone. Im in my late 30s and personally feel too old to have any more kids now. However I already have 2 and don't feel any urge for more so it's maybe a psychological thing.

I know a few people who have had their first in their late 30s/early 40s and are awesome mums, but most had difficulty conceiving.

Dream pregnancy (birth a bit tricky but cord was round neck, nothing to do with my age), healthy baby boy.

I conceived dc2 as I turned 40. It took a few years, but despite failing to get pregnant age 36-39, 40 was the charm.

Tbh, it had been my personal cut-off point so my 40th birthday felt pretty miserable but I knew for my own sanity I couldn't just keep on trying indefinitely. We didn't have any fertility investigations as we already had ds1 and wouldn't have been able to afford any private treatment so had made the decision that it either happened naturally or it didn't.

The pregnancy and birth were textbook (high risk Down Syndrome screening result as would be the case for many 40 year olds based on age alone). Ds2 was a very easy baby, nightmare toddler, average 10 year old now!

Mum had me at 38. Her sisters and mum's side had healthy babies up to mid 40s. Most women I know have had babies close to 40. All been fine.

isn't the abortion rate higher in over 40s because of women thinkimg they can't get pregnant then?

If I already had children before 39- which I do- then I wouldn’t opt to have a toddler in my 30s.
Its circumstance and preference.
Biologically it’s obviously towards the later end of most women’s chances, no matter what stories you hear.

I had my first at 37 and my last DC at 43. No dramas and a happy experience all round. We've all got our own story.

It really is different for every woman. There should be no judgements whatsoever.

I wonder if she comes from a community that have their children younger ? She may be surrounded by women who have older teenagers at 39 so to her it seems too late. I’m not from then group myself and had my child at 41 with no problems so to me 39 is not too old. I think the average age for the first time mum is creeping up though so obviously becoming more common to wait.

I think it is too old. 39 is not too old for a baby. Fifties is too old for teenagers still at school.
