TTC in late 30s

I'm 38 and am ready to start trying for baby number two. Would have tried sooner after baby one but had to hold off for various reasons such as poor mental health and finances but now the time feels right.

Any one of similar age in same boat and fancy joining for moral support? Any tips?

Have started taking some prenatal vitamins again, am a healthy weight and trying to maintain a healthy diet and some exercise, don't smoke, but do drink but only moderately.

I guess you'd say I'm early 30's (33) but also just started TTC baby #2 happy to join you! :)

Also like you have started taking all the necessary vitamins! I was on the pill previously so I am currently just waiting to see if ovulation will happen this month or not!

My son turns 5 soon so it feels like a long time since I've been down this road! I had forgotten how consuming it all was to be honest.

Hello @Graceybaby sounds like you're all set. I know what you mean about it being so consuming. Am really not wanting it to take over like it did last time and to try and stay positive. How long did it take you with your son? It took us a year and I was super stressed for so much of it.

handinglove9, same here! I am so determined not to get so stressed about it this time, I think I was a little naive last time though and thought because I was young and healthy it would happen instantly! But it took 6 months and that was painful enough, a year must have been torture. But I had a lovely pregnancy with no problems so that's all I can hope for again.

Where abouts are you in your cycle? Are you on cycle 1?

handinglove9 · 24/03/2022 15:25

It was hard, but I know lots of people who've tried even much longer. It can be pretty soul destroying and I really don't want to go to that place again. I feel very grateful having one child and I'm really holding onto that, I'd love to give her a sibling and now feel I've got mental capacity to deal with two. The first couple of years were so hard!

I've just gone past my fertile window so will need to wait until my next one mid April. I am planning on spending this month getting in a good positive headspace and being healthy. Having some sun definitely helps. How about you?

Hi, can I join? I'm 36 and pretty sure this is CD1 of Cycle 1 TTC no.2.

My son is going to be one in two weeks and I'm a bit daunted by the thought of two babies but we had a terrible time trying to have him so we've decided to start again sooner rather than later.

Graceybaby · 24/03/2022 17:36

@handinglove9 Yeah It definitely is soul destroying at time! We ended up just DTD like robots and it really effected our relationship, determined not to do that this time, I'm planning to DTD at least twice around ovulation and any extra will be bonus but only if we are feeling it!

Oh god yes the first few years were so hard for me too, it took me a while to decided to have another to be honest.. I know it's going to be tough but I feel I will be more mentally prepared this time like you say.

Hi @babyjellyfish of course you can! Looking forward to sharing the journey with you ladies :)

xx

pangolin84 · 24/03/2022 20:28

Hello, would love to join you. All the threads are a bit overwhelming so it’s nice to see one that’s a bit more specific!
I’m 37, TTC no 2 and had my son 18 months ago. It was a bit of a journey as I had an early miscarriage at 6 weeks on our first cycle, then took a year for me to get pregnant again. Luckily that one stayed put and we have a lovely little boy. I’m keen to get trying for number two because of how long it took for us before. DH isn’t as keen as I am haha.
Just had one cycle of no tracking and “see how it goes”, and now CD1 of cycle 2! Don’t really want to track with OPKs as I found it so stressful before but my cycles have been really irregular, probably because I’m still breastfeeding at night.

caulkheaded · 24/03/2022 21:43

Can I join - I’m 36 and ttc number 1. DH is ten years older and I’ve had a lot of ovarian health issues so we’re not expecting it to be easy. Beginning the two week wait this weekend.

Graceybaby · 25/03/2022 09:42

Hi @pangolin84 of course!

Yep a lot of the threads on here are very overwhelming and I've yet to find a good group to really share this journey with so I hopefully this is it! It seems like we're all on a similar wave length!

@caulkheaded hi! Of course :) Sounds like you've had a rough ride already, I hope it doesn't take you too long.

So my pill breakthrough bleeding has definitely stopped now which is good, I have been taking OPKs once a day as I did read that ovulation can happen straight away sometimes and so far they have been negative as expected but tested this morning and got the first of any sort of line I've had so far but I'm thinking maybe I tested at the wrong time as it was early this morning.. I will test again this afternoon and see what happens I guess!

How's everyone else feeling today?

Graceybaby · 25/03/2022 15:36

So tested again this afternoon and a much fainter line so I think I just tested at the wrong time this morning, think my wee may have been too concentrated!

babyjellyfish · 28/03/2022 12:40

Have you tested again, Gracey?

Graceybaby · 28/03/2022 14:41

@babyjellyfish Hey! Yeah I have been testing daily since and still negative, think I just tested at the wrong time 🙈 it's just frustrating not knowing if or when I'll ovulate this month, will just have to keep testing and wait and see!

babyjellyfish · 28/03/2022 15:00

It's difficult when your fertility is just returning and you don't know when things will happen, isn't it?

I haven't come off the pill but I am still breastfeeding and I was waiting for my cycle to start up again. Since my son was about 9 months old I was trying to do ovulation tests every day to see if I could catch my peak but I usually forgot. But in the end I noticed I had wet cervical mucus which prompted me to test again and then I caught my peak a couple of days later. (I wasn't trying, but now I am on my period and going to try this cycle.)

Graceybaby · 28/03/2022 15:36

@babyjellyfish haha yeah I can imagine that would be difficult with a 9 month old! I barely remembered to brush my teeth when my son was little! His almost 5 now so it feels like forever since I've been down this TTC road..

That's a good shout, I'm going to try and keep an eye out for good CM later part of this week as I think that would be when I'd technically be in my fertile window but we'll see!

Luckily me and OH are in the very excited to get pregnant lets have sex as much as possible stage haha so we should be covered either way! give it a few cycles I'm sure it won't last!! Haha

X

pangolin84 · 30/03/2022 21:58

How’s everyone doing? Today is CD7 for me so starting to think about timings and fertile windows… so romantic…
I’m planning on going by CM again this cycle. Clearly it didn’t work out last month so if anyone has any tips I’m all ears!

Zaboomafoo · 30/03/2022 22:03

37 here and aiming for number 3!
I'm roughly around ovulation time so fingers crossed for the next couple of weeks.

Graceybaby · 31/03/2022 09:37

Hey @pangolin84 and @Zaboomafoo :)

Feeling pretty deflated today tbh.

Cycle #1 after coming off the pill - Think I'm CD13, getting lots of good signs of impending ovulation, high soft cervix, CM increasing but no positive or near positive OPK yet but I never used to ovulate until around CD16-17 when TTC my son so maybe It's too early for OPKs.

Although I don't think we'll be in with much chance this cycle anyway as struggling to DTD as much as we'd like - my OH has been referred to a specialist and is on a waiting list as he has (sorry if TMI) an issue with his foreskin, occasionally it can be very tight which can sometimes make sex quite uncomfortable for him which as you can imagine is getting us both down atm. We are managing to DTD just not as much as we'd like to give us the best chance.

Feeling a little nauseous today, anybody else ever get that around ovulation? I'm sure I used to get it when previously TTC.

handinglove9 · 31/03/2022 12:58

@Graceybaby sorry to hear about your husband's issue and that you aren't feeling well. I don't feel sick around ovulation but sometimes I get some pains. Do you ever have that?

Are you able to remind me of what all the acronyms mean? I know that below and that's it!

OH - other half
CM - cervical mucus?
TTC - trying to conceive

Graceybaby · 31/03/2022 13:37

Oh god, there's so many! If you do a search on Google I'm sure it'll give you a very list! haha

So I've just started bleeding.. only a little ATM but I do feel very AF-y, so confused as I'm sure cervix was high and was having CM etc but now I'm not sure! Maybe I'm not going to ovulate and just going to have a period.. if so at least I can start a fresh on a new cycle.. just frustrating.

Graceybaby · 31/03/2022 14:44

*very long list

Od130990 · 31/03/2022 15:07

@handinglove9
DTD- doing the deed
AF- aunt flow
CD- cycle day
TMI- too much information

Od130990 · 31/03/2022 15:08

@handinglove9
Yes CM cervical mucus

Cocobeau · 31/03/2022 15:13

I'm also 38. I came off contraception (coil) for the first time in many many years on December 13th. I am now 6 + 4 weeks pregnant and we weren't exactly at it like rabbits. I was shocked to have conceived so quickly, especially because of my age. I am generally healthy, do a lot of regular exercise (although I'm still a bit porky) and I don't drink or smoke. I suppose it's possible that has all helped.

Graceybaby · 31/03/2022 16:13

@handinglove9

DS - Dear son
DD - Dear daughter
LO- Little one
EWCM - Egg white Cervical mucus
DPO - Days past ovulation

My mind's gone blank 😅
