Hey guys first time poster here!

TTC cycle #2 and want to try the SMEP but have a few questions:

  1. Does it matter what time of day you BD?
  2. Do you have to start on day 8 or could i start on day 10 and it still be effective? I usually get my peak ovulation on day 17.
  3. Any success stories anyone can share?!

We sort of did SMEP of sorts. I tend to ovulate quite early (day 12 sometimes) so we dtd every other day from about day 7or 8 and then the day of peak. Sometimes the day after peak as well. Although we didn't continue for the 3 days like you are supposed to. I don't think it matters is hat time of day you dtd.

I got pregnant 3 cycles in a row with this method, sadly one MC and one chemical. I'm pregnant now and praying for a sticky bean.

My DH said it does put a bit of pressure on the man to 'perform' so just be wary of that. No matter how much they like dtd, the rigidity of SMEP can be quite a lot.

I’m sorry to hear about your previous 2 pregnancies but sending you all the positive vibes for this one!

Did you DTD at a specific time of day?

SGChome20 · 27/01/2022 09:59

Not really just when we had the chance! Both work during the day so it was always in the evening. I think one of the times ovulation fell on the weekend so we might have done it a bit earlier at lunchtime.

HellsBellsK · 27/01/2022 10:44

We did it - started DTD on say 8, then every 2nd day. Ovulated on day 14 so didn't do it the day before. Just day 14,15 and then 17.
We did get pregnant that time and now have a 2 year old. Say we DTD in the evening as we had a 1 year old at the time

Trying for #3 at the moment. Tried to do it last month but didn't go to plan, DTD day 8,10 ovulated on day 11 but didn't `DTD, Then DTD day 12 but have my period now.
Will try this month again. But like @SGChome20 said it does put pressure on DH he didn't really like it. Hence why no DTD on ovulation day last month as he was so tired from work that day.

Peonies94 · 27/01/2022 11:21

@Yogagirl18 I think it depends on the length of your cycles. Mine are long, so I never start until cycle day 10! Time of day really doesn’t matter, so long as it’s roughly every other day! I also don’t tend to focus on ovulation too much, as I’m undergoing tests and not sure if I actually ovulate, as I have a few peaks each month, so I kind of just of try DTD maybe once more when I feel ovulation pains or anything which could potentially indicate ovulation, otherwise we just aim for every other day throughout cycle! Goodluck!

Putlebebeinme · 27/01/2022 13:13

Hi yoga! My partner and I have started SMEP this month! Also TTC#1 Cycle 2, CD12 now so have DTD CD8,10 and 12, mind if I keep you company? Feeling optimistic this cycle early days. Best of luck! Smile

Yogagirl18 · 27/01/2022 13:27

Of course! Would love to know how you get on. I’m only on CD2, so got a little bit of time yet.
How have you been finding it so far?

OP posts:
Putlebebeinme · 27/01/2022 13:49

Its actually been fine! Last month we DTD O-2,-1, O and O+1, but also incorporating lying down with hips raised for 15-30 mins afterwards this cycle. Talk to me CD17 and see if I'm still saying the same. Challenging not to get totally distracted TTC! Are you tracking with OPKs? I'd say you would be fine to start SMEP CD10. Given you ovulate that bit later in the month, such a huge learning curve the whole thing!

Yogagirl18 · 27/01/2022 14:07

Yep I use the clear blue ovulation tests! I know it feels like it can consume your life Grin

Random q - but how long after DTD do you pee then if you’re lying down for 30 mins after?

OP posts:
Putlebebeinme · 29/01/2022 10:34

I wait about 20-30 mins now that we're ttc, prior to this I would typically try go straight away to prevent the dreaded UTIs!

How are you getting on? You're about day 4 now? Busy month ahead! Ended up getting a positive opk yesterday on CD13 which is a bit early for me. Was supposed to be the day we took one day break but instead DTD yesterday, will go again today and tomorrow, take the one day break and go again Tuesday!

This cycle I am still having the odd glass of wine here and there, probably not the best thing to do but last month I was totally dry and it didn't seem to make any odds.

Happy Saturday! 😊

Arly90 · 29/01/2022 12:02

Hello ladies.
We are trying the SMEP this cycle. It's cycle #9 for us and I'm currently on cycle day 14... Going my by BBT I ovulated yesterday.

So we DTD CD 8 (morning cause we fell asleep on CD7) then evenings on CD 9, 11 and 12. I got my peak on CD 12 so should have DTD yesterday (CD 13) but we were both shattered so think we will try tonight again even tho it's probably too late 🙈

Fingers crossed we all see that BFP this month 🤞

Putlebebeinme · 29/01/2022 13:26

Hi Arly90

Welcome! Is this your first time doing smep? You DTD 11 and 12 so you hit O-2 and 1! Can't fault that!

How are you feeling about this month? Its tough going!

Arly90 · 29/01/2022 15:51

Yeah first month trying SMEP.

I don't feel optimistic any month now 🙈 I'm finding the whole thing very frustrating. Had some blood tests this week as I had previous problems with my thryoid so that might give some answers.

How are you doing?x

Putlebebeinme · 29/01/2022 15:59

I just can't imagine having this much BD for a year! Having only experienced one TWW I can understand why you would be frustrated, I hope you get some answers. How is it possible there is so much luck involved in this?!

Yogagirl18 · 29/01/2022 16:37

Fingers crossed this is your month Arly90! Do let us know how you get on :)

How are you feeling so far Putlebebeinme?

I’m still deciding whether to start DTD on cycle day 8 or 10. I think the earlier the better just to cover all bases!
I’m also going away during my most fertile period but hoping a drink here and there won’t hurt!

OP posts:
Putlebebeinme · 29/01/2022 18:02

Surprisingly optimistic, no reason to be but have hit all the key SMEP days so far. Based on EWCM I was ovulating today having got the first positive opk yesterday and by afternoon the LH stripe were fading so here's hoping.

Do you follow r/tryingforababy on reddit? There's a thing about having a cheeseburger when you're 8dpo and anecdotally a good few ladies got their BFP after having one that day so you best believe we're getting that burger on 8dpo!!

It will be really nice to be away during your ferile period, a bit of distraction! I am going to try not to test until 13dpo, having started at 5dpo last tww and symptom spotting like crazy I was sure I was about to be an octomom haha... not exactly!

I know we could probably just DTD every second day from CD8 which would probably cover all bases but I love a good plan so SMEP appealed to me! Let's hope it leads to BFPs for us all ladies Smile

HellsBellsK · 29/01/2022 20:19

Im on cycle day 6 so will be starting soon. Going to start my clear blue ovulation kit tomorrow and hope for the best.

DH has said tonight that he doesn't feel well.. He has 2 days to feel better Wink

@Putlebebeinme im definitely up for having a cheese burger too Grin

@Yogagirl18 I have always had a drink during my fertile week and have a 4 & 2 year old so guessing it does no harm. Enjoy yourself!

lakejupiter · 29/01/2022 20:28

How does the cheeseburger help @Putlebebeinme

Putlebebeinme · 29/01/2022 20:44

It's this anecdote off tryingforababy sub-reddit lots of women have happened to have a cheeseburger at 8dpo and they happened to get a bfp that month so it has become a bit of a "thing" - I am willing to try anything and I do happen to have a penchant for cheeseburgers so why not give it a go?! Grin 🍔

SGChome20 · 30/01/2022 14:26

I've been reading bits on this thread. Just re when to start dtd. I've read on fertility forums, Google etc that if your partner doesn't have a release of sperm often that dead sperm can build up which is obviously the opposite of what we want. So starting (or telling your partner to DIY) before you think you need to isn't a bad idea.

Yogagirl18 · 30/01/2022 14:59

Thank you for sharing this - really useful to know!

How are all the Smeppers getting on?

Stats for the month: finally made it to the end of SMEP cycle 1:

BD: CD8/10/12 was supposed to skip 13 but I got a positive OPK so BD for the three days CD 13/14/15 and today which was CD17 after the one day break. Technically on 4dpo today if I did in fact ovulate CD13 (ish).

Now we wait. That was a lot of bom chicka wah wah to get through. 😳

Went out to primark to pick up some lingerie before we kicked off proceedings which DH really enjoyed.

Where is everyone else in their SMEP journey? Happy Smepping to all and to all a good SMEP!

HellsBellsK · 01/02/2022 21:12

Ah so jealous that you are at the end of it - I'm only at the start. Cycle day 9 so DTD yesterday.

Will do it again tomorrow and so on. No positive OPK yet, hope I may get a flashing smiley tomorrow.

Might dig out some lingerie I have that hasn't seen the light of day in awhile Blush

Arly90 · 01/02/2022 21:30

Hey. I'm currently 4DP0. According to OPK and temp I ovulated on CD 13 and DTD CD 8 9 11 and 12. We had such a busy weekend we didn't manage 13 and 14 as planned 😭 but also very aware I don't wanna make it a total chore 😂
I have period like cramps today pretty sure i had this last month too. I hate the waiting 😭 x

Yogagirl18 · 01/02/2022 21:39

I’m CD7 at the moment but think I’m gonna hold off DTD until CD10.

Bet you guys are glad the Smepping over and done with 😂 keep us posted on how you’re feeling.
