Normal Period then Brown Spotting BFP

Has anyone experienced this?

I13 days ago had a period that lasted 5 days, used a moon cup and that was 1/2 full each time I checked. For 2 days before and after I had brown spotting (took a test 2 and 1 day before which was negative). But yesterday CD12 brown spotting with mucosy bits in every time I wiped, never had this before and had boob ache. So I took a cheapy test when I got home to "put my mind at rest" and it was positive (quite strongly given how faint they can be) Took 2 more with same urine. All the same. So I dug the FRER out of the cupboard was was a BFP too.

I'm so confused, I had a normal period. No sex since mid April.
Also I'm now concerned about the spotting. Waiting for a call back from 111 and I have convinced myself I have an ectopic now 😕

You might have more luck calling the early pregnancy unit / emergency Gynae unit of your local hospital. They will see anyone with a BFP and either pain or bleeding or both.

I don't know if you would get a BFP that strong with an ectopic? I really don't know. It's very strong though.

Sometimes people do have bleeding early on but are then fine. How are you feeling?

Thinking of you hope all is ok xxx

@ChikiTIKI
Thanks for your reply

I'll wait for the 111 callback before I turn up anywhere. I guess they will send me there if there is any doubt.

I have a small amount of discomfort in my abdomen but it's just below my rib cage so I think it's too high up to be anything ovary related, and my belly is making lots of gassy noises (have had this stitch like pain before and it was ok).

It's not a lot of spotting and it's old blood, but after the shock of today, I'm feeling a bit highly strung 😕

Hey!
@pinkoi how did it go?

I had absolutely no bleeding with my ectopic (and it was a very serious one that burst open my fallopian tube) so bleeding doesn't need to be anything bad.
I hope you're all good!

pinkoi · 11/05/2019 01:57

@beibikeiks
Well the phone call didn't come so I went to bed! 1:45 the phone started ringing and scared the life out of me (but it's been the day for that)

They have booked me an appointment with the out of hours GP for first thing tomorrow.

Thankfully the stitch like feeling in my belly has gone at the mo. Pretty sure that was trapped wind. But still getting brown blobs.

Still totally confused about having a normal period 2 weeks ago. If I had miscarried at that point, I surely wouldn't get such a strong positive 14 days later...

It's a riddle, that is for sure...

Hi @pinkoi I'm currently 37 weeks pregnant at the moment I had what I thought was a period but when I went to the docs they said that what I thought was a period was implant bleeding as I must've ovulated earlier than I thought. It could be that, I took a FRER too but yours is so much more stronger than mine lol bleeding sometimes just happens try and relax and let it sink in :) and congrats!!!

pinkoi · 11/05/2019 08:57

Well I just went to see the out of hours gp who did a test and said it was negative.
I took another two cheap stick tests myself with the same urine and they were positive.

I'm so confused 😢

OP posts:
pinkoi · 11/05/2019 09:21

Also to add - he gave me one of the tests he used to take home which I'll try later.

I googled the instructions for it and you have to wait up to 5mins for a result.
I wasn't even in the room with him that long and he dipped the stick 1/2 way though the appointment.

Just phoned to tell my partner who said "this is what I was worried about" he was saying how faint the FRER was and how it probably wasn't right. 😢

Surely if I'd had a chemical at the end of last cycle (14days ago) and the "period" I had was the end of it, surely my HGC would be barely detectable now?!?

OP posts:
Ellikopter · 11/05/2019 09:32

FRER are the best on the market, I'm sorry you're having to go through this :( hopefully it's just the doctor who is messing up your results x

Mistymeow · 11/05/2019 10:02

That’s very weird because the tests in the picture are really strong positives. As they look so strong I imagine a clear blue digital would give you your answer. I wouldn’t be satisfied with that GP if you yourself got positives from the same urine. I’m not sure how the EPU operates in your area (check on your hospital’s website) as some you can just ring up and get an appointment, others you need a referral from your gp. That should be your next step. A positive test with bleeding and cramps needs to be investigated.

pinkoi · 11/05/2019 10:24

So my hunch that he didn't leave the test long enough seems to be correct.

I have just done the 2nd test of the same brand that the doctor gave me. It's fainter than the FRER but it's not as sensitive test.
This is still positive yes?

In other news no more brown spotting this morning and in pretty sure the discomfort seems to have been wind...

I'm trying to be prepared for the fact that perhaps this is a pregnancy that has come and gone.

I don't know how long HCG takes to come out of your system. I'm 14days since my "period" started (2 neg tests before that) no sex since 12th April. OV predicted on the 15th. Surely by the time the bleeding arrived on the 27th I won't have had enough HCG around that it would still be present now??

So my last definite period was the 29/3 so I would be 6 weeks now.

EPU is self referral and the GP gave me the info, but it's not open until Monday. A and E if I have pain or have heavy bleeding.

My brain hurts
Thanks for your replies everyone. It's really helping xxx

How strange
It’s shit that doctor didn’t wait til the time limit. Its also surprising he didn’t take a blood test
The picture of your FRER isn’t faint all !
I hope you get some answers soon

TacoTeabagging · 11/05/2019 10:53

I wax still getting strong positives for over 3 weeks from one of my miscarriages but the others it tended to go after 2. I really think you will need to see the EPU so you can be sure what is going on Flowers

pinkoi · 11/05/2019 11:13

Yeh - I'm going to phone the EPU first thing Monday morning and do another frer tomorrow morning, just to check it's not fading.

Tbh I feel pregnant - my boobs are on FIRE

But who knows!
Xxx

Mistymeow · 11/05/2019 11:18

Yes definitely call EPU on Monday and explain the bleeding and the positive tests. If you get really bad pain or heavy bleeding before Monday I would go to a&e just in case. I really hope the bleeding isn’t a miscarriage and you get some answers at EPU. You definitely need a blood test as your tests are still positive and to rule out ectopic.

ChikiTIKI · 11/05/2019 15:56

Hope you get some better info from the EPU. I'm sure they will ask you to come in and do a scan to see what's going on. Sounds like the doctor was not great! Hope you're alright.

I'm sure I read somewhere that bleeding from an ectopic is dark and like prune juice. I'm no expert by any means though. Good sign that you're not in pain any more. Bet it seems like forever until Monday. Hope it goes quickly for you xxx

pinkoi · 11/05/2019 17:01

I'm sort of flitting between being totally chilled about it all and really panicking, for my own health more than anything.

I'm getting watery brown discharge with the odd brown blob in it when I wipe again now. No pain as such.

I really want to talk to someone about it but I'm now away for the weekend (admittedly only down the road from where I live)
If I walk out and get medical advice, it is going to look really obvious 😕

Claire78564 · 11/05/2019 18:16

Hi, the same thing happened to me. Had a period but it lasted 2 days then a week or so later had spotting so did a test and it was positive. I went to the EPU and they confirmed miscarriage. Just because this happened to me though doesn’t mean it’s happened to you. Fingers crossed it’s a good sign for you xx

GoldenBlue · 11/05/2019 19:56

Wishing you good luck

pinkoi · 11/05/2019 20:36

Thanks all.

Rang the local gyne ward as their number was down for out of hours. They said just to keep an eye on it and see what happens. While it's stable to wait and see the EPU on Monday.

However now brown spotting has turned to red spotting with bits in it and it's a bit heavier still not needing a pad.

I literally have no clue what to do.
I have no pain except a sort of heavy belly feeling.

I guess I must be miscarrying 😕

OP posts:
Claire78564 · 11/05/2019 22:31

I’m sorry :( nothing makes these things easier. Still see what they Say because there could be a chance everything is okay. I went through this myself and for me it was the upsetting news. Just remember if it is a miscarriage you haven’t done anything to cause this. If you want a chat I’m around x

pinkoi · 11/05/2019 23:13

@Claire78564
Thanks, that is really kind.

It's all slowed a bit. I guess I just try and sleep and see how things are in the morning.

It's still only blood/brown when I wipe.

Took a test this eve and the line is just the same as it was yesterday and this morning.

Have a frer for the morning.

The last 24hrs have been a confusing time... I shouldn't be pregnant at all, I was neg on tests 16 days ago and I then had 5 day period and spotting since 🤯

OP posts:
Claire78564 · 12/05/2019 00:14

Any time. This happened to me I tested after the ‘period’ and it was negative but then when I got the same spotting as you it was positive. It was never heavy just when I wiped and occasionally on pads. Just remember that if you are going through same thing as me even though it’s not of much use now, you managed to catch which is a great step in the direction of having a baby. I would just turn up at the EPU tomorrow which is what I did. They saw me straight away. Did an exam and bloods. You can ask them questions. I also had a scan. It’s a hard time especially when you have been thrown from one emotion to another. What your Body is doing though is completely natural and keep as positive as you can. Lots of hugs. Put on a pair of pjs and get a hot water bottle. Let us know how you get on xx

Chefwifelife · 12/05/2019 07:28

Oh op. I’ve just been reading this post and wish you good luck today x

Mistymeow · 12/05/2019 09:06

How are you doing this morning, op? I hope you didn’t get any further bleeding overnight.
