Normal Period then Brown Spotting BFP

Has anyone experienced this?

I13 days ago had a period that lasted 5 days, used a moon cup and that was 1/2 full each time I checked. For 2 days before and after I had brown spotting (took a test 2 and 1 day before which was negative). But yesterday CD12 brown spotting with mucosy bits in every time I wiped, never had this before and had boob ache. So I took a cheapy test when I got home to "put my mind at rest" and it was positive (quite strongly given how faint they can be) Took 2 more with same urine. All the same. So I dug the FRER out of the cupboard was was a BFP too.

I'm so confused, I had a normal period. No sex since mid April.
Also I'm now concerned about the spotting. Waiting for a call back from 111 and I have convinced myself I have an ectopic now 😕

Dunno if it's a good sign but there was no more red bleeding over night, just a bit brown when I wiped this morning.

Took the frer test with FMU (top pic) compared to the Friday one (bottom) and I think I can see the line is stronger or I might be going mad. Confused

Thanks for listening to me empty my brain here, this is a very confusing process.

Xxxx

@pinkoi they look strong positives to me hun :) best of luck xx

Mistymeow · 12/05/2019 16:09

It looks promising that the lines haven’t got fainter. I’m sure EPU will be a lot more helpful than the out of hours GP and will hopefully give you a blood test to see what’s going on.

pinkoi · 13/05/2019 10:13

@Mistymeow

Got phone triaged by the EPU. They were not very helpful.

They didn't want to see me because after I gave them the info they think my "period" 2 weeks ago was an early miscarriage and that tests are still showing positive now while the hormones drop in my system.

I tried to explain that the day before that "period" I did a test and it was negative, yet, 2 weeks later, after the pregnancy had supposedly failed the tests are now showing strongly positive. They just kept saying it's "different for everyone"

They had no explanation for the spotting I had over the weekend. But didn't seem concerned.

I asked about scans but they wouldn't see me on the basis that if I am pregnant it would be too early to see anything before 5/6weeks. I explained that if I am pregnant my last period was 6w and 4 days ago and I can't be pregnant based on the start of the bleeding 2 weeks ago because it would be too early to show on a test at CD 13 and I haven't had sex this cycle.

I'm in bits now and I feel nauseous. They want me to wait a week and test again.

Part of my need for an answer now is that in my previous pregnancy I had Hyperemesis and with a 70-80% chance of getting it again you need to start medication as soon as you are pregnant so that it doesn't take hold.

Sorry that they are not giving you the support you need. The spotting would probably be linked to the miscarriage (if that is the case) still happening as it can take 3 weeks or so for the lining to completely come away. For peace of mind I would go to the EPU and just turn up. Or you could book a docs appointment and tell them you are pregnant and bleeding. They will do a hcg test which will give you a base line and then they can follow it up. Hope you are okay as best you can be x

pinkoi · 13/05/2019 10:53

@Claire78564

So the EPU won't see walk in patients. Next GP appointment I can book is on the 1st of June. So I guess I'm on my own either way! Unless I'm in pain or haemorrhaging.

The thing that puzzles me is that does your HCG continue to rise until the misscarrge is complete?

I still can't compute the fact that the day before the heavy bleed started 2 weeks ago that any pregnancy didn't register on a test, but 2 weeks later the same brand of test was showing positive on a pregnancy that supposed ended 2 weeks ago?!? Confused

How I'm going to not drive myself mad over the next week is a mystery.

OP posts:
Claire78564 · 13/05/2019 12:28

The exact same thing happened to me and I couldn’t understand it either. Neg test at the point of my ‘period’ then positive after 2 week. I think that in these cases when not all of the tissue has subsided it can cause hcg to rise but not at the way it should. I found when I had the brown spotting which was on and off for 2 weeks my hcg did reduce. I would get an appointment on the day if you can. They should be giving you support. I had a period 2 weeks after the bleeding stopped then it all went back to normal. This is my 3rd cycle since mc trying to conceive xx

Mistymeow · 13/05/2019 12:29

Hmm but the thing is your FRER doesn’t look at all like residual hormone (I could be wrong). Could you get a clear blue digital to give you the weeks indicator? It’s not terribly accurate but could give you an estimation on your hormone level. I’d be tempted to call your GP and at least get a phone consultation. Explain how anxious you are.

pinkoi · 13/05/2019 13:38

@Mistymeow and @Claire78564 and everyone else who has taken the time to reply - Thankyou for your support through this, being able to vent my confusion here is so helpful. Thanks

I have just nipped out at lunch and got a CBD (I have peed on roughly £35 in the last few days which is also upsetting). Thanks for the suggestion.

Do you think it's worth waiting for FMU tomorrow?

I'm going to ring my GP on the way home today and see what they say. I'm really confused what the EPU is for if it's not for people with issues like mine??

OP posts:
Claire78564 · 13/05/2019 14:32

Yeah I get it ☹️ For me I bought the clear blue that tells you the weeks and I went from 3-4 to 1-2 before the hospital confirmed mc. I think you really need to get in with the docs. I’m shocked the EPU didn’t bother with you properly x

pinkoi · 13/05/2019 16:58

God this is a nightmare. I'm at work and the bright red bleeding when I wipe has started again.

Starting to loose my cool a bit now.

Will try and call the GP on the way home, see if they can help...

I'm ok if I'm miscarrying and I have to sit it out as long as I know that is what is happening. But if I'm still pregnant surely I should be resting until the bleeding stops?? I'm trying to carry on with life while in this weird limbo.

Xx

OP posts:
Mistymeow · 13/05/2019 18:03

Oh I’m sorry to hear that. Are you cramping as well? You definitely need to speak to a doctor. I’ve no medical training but sometimes even red bleeding doesn’t necessarily mean a miscarriage. But bleeding in early pregnancy should always be investigated. If it gets bad (heavy bleeding, extreme pain) you need to go to a&e.

Claire78564 · 13/05/2019 18:12

☹️ sorry to hear that. If you aren’t in pain then that’s okay but they greatly should see you! See what the doctors say xx

pinkoi · 13/05/2019 19:28

The sticking point with the EPU was that they wouldn't accept that I was pregnant because of me having a period 14 days ago they seemed to assume that that was the miscarriage and that this bleeding is the tail end of it. Despite the strong positive tests over the weekend.

Anyway - I spoke to a very helpful GP who agreed that we need to know what is going on and that they would phone up and refer me back to the EPU for a scan in the morning when they open.

I'm more than a bit relieved that someone is finally listening, even if it's ultimately not good news xx

OP posts:
Claire78564 · 13/05/2019 21:18

Yeah the EPU have behaved terribly. The way it works is your period may have been a breakthrough bleed and a sign that something wasn’t right about the pregnancy. If this is a mc then the main thing you can take from this (it’s what i Did and don’t get me wrong it’s still painful when I think about it) that you can get pregnant let us know how you get on. I’ll be thinking of you x

pinkoi · 13/05/2019 22:54

@Claire78564

Thanks love - yeh I'm guessing something isn't right. This is why I'm desperate to be scanned in case it's ectopic. The last thing I need is to loose a tube or to need surgery. I already have a 4.5 year old. I don't want my health to be in jeopardy by ignoring it until I need an ambulance. (Which was the crux of what the EPU suggested)

Was considering paying for a private scan if the GP wouldn't help me.

You are right tho, it's a good sign that at least I am ovulating and his swimmers still do the bizzo

ThanksThanksThanks

OP posts:
Claire78564 · 13/05/2019 23:59

Yeah I feel for you because the EPU, whilst I feel we’re pretty uncomforting about it, did all the tests. I’m sure you won’t have an ectopic but it’s best to check and then it will put your mind at ease. Indeed, it freaks me out that the little guys could be just sat there waiting whilst I’m going about my business haha. All the best to you xx

pinkoi · 14/05/2019 07:39

CB Digital is showing pregnant 1-2 weeks which would be behind where I should be at this point if I was 6weeks. I guess I could have OVd late but at least I'm getting close to an answer. One step test looked a bit fainter this morning too, but how dark they are seems variable with the same urine. But confusingly I feel super nauseous, but that could just be the stress of all of this.

OP posts:
fuckitywhat · 14/05/2019 07:45

Can you book a private early scan?

pinkoi · 14/05/2019 08:02

@fuckitywhat (love the username - basically sums up my week)

Yes somewhere by me offered scans from 6weeks for £90 based on LMP I'm 6w5days (hence the 1-2 weeks on the CB is a bad sign)

Although the GP is referring me to the EPU for a scan today hopefully...

OP posts:
Claire78564 · 14/05/2019 08:26

I would wait for the scan with the EPU, if that’s what the Gp is doing then it’s your best bet. Fx for you x

Mistymeow · 14/05/2019 08:50

I hope you get a scan today. Sorry the digital isn’t showing the number of weeks you were expecting (but it’s not always reliable). With the bleeding I suppose be prepared for the worst but I’ll keep my fingers crossed. Glad you finally spoke to someone who listened, I still can’t believe that other GP didn’t look at the pregnancy test properly! It doesn’t sound ectopic if you don’t have pain but it’s good to be vigilant (sometimes it doesn’t present with pain). Definitely get a private scan today if EPU don’t see you.

pinkoi · 14/05/2019 12:31

So scan with the EPU is tomorrow.

I just want an answer now so I don't think I'm dying every time I goto the loo or have wind!

I think it's unlikely to be good news with all the info I have but at least I should have a better idea of what is next.

So much love to you all and thanks for the benefit of your wisdom. I'll keep you posted xxx

Thanks

Mintypea5 · 14/05/2019 13:07

@pinkoi hope your scan goes well tomorrow. My personal experience has been similar in the past once was a MC and once was a fully healthy baby (10.5 months old now!) fingers crossed for you. I will say also the CB ones have never been accurate for me! In 2 of my 3 miscarriages they've said 3+ and in my full term ones I've never got past 1-2 and 2-3 weeks
