Trying to conceive first child with PCO/PCOS or irregular long cycles

Hi there,

I'm currently on my 3rd cycle ttc my first child and I suffer with irregular cycles due to PCO. I conceived first cycle but it was a missed miscarriage at 10 weeks. My second cycle was a chemical pregnancy. I'm now on my 3rd and it's day 34 with no ovulation yet. I'm using Ovusense to temp which helps to show when I've ovulated. I can't help but worry it was a fluke to fall quickly like I did. Just wondering if there's anyone else in a similar situation struggling with long cycles as I'm finding it really frustrating. Looking forward to chatting to some of you! x

@EssJayyCee I think 6 months and show the doctor your charts. I'm so sorry this is hard. Your temps took a little more stable now so it might happen. Can I ask what your weight is like? Ladies with normal blood hormone levels can still have issues with insulin resistance. Basically a low gi diet might help. Also Inositol might help too.

My weight is the the heaviest it's ever been due to the missed miscarriage. I just can't lose it. I've always been slim but to be fair it was creeping up when I got pregnant. My periods were actually a bit better when my bmi was 27 compared with 23. They say everyone has a fertile weight. It's currently 29. I'm trying to at least lose a stone as I think it'll help with my fertility. Some ladies with pcos find even a small weight loss helps. It's just so hard at the moment. I feel quite depressed still after my two losses and not sure I can face a diet. Xx

How old are you Ess?
I'd def wait 6 months and take all your charts with you. Hopefully it'll work before then though x

EssJayyCee · 03/05/2019 14:48

@CatConfusion I am at my lowest ever weight right now but still just in the overweight section of BMI at 25.7
I have lost 5 stone over the last 4 years. (Slow and steady wins the race)
I ideally want another stone off but struggling to get the last bit off. I am trying to cut sugar out but I don't really have much anyway... the most sugar I have is in fruit.. which I have recently switched all what I used to eat for fruit with lower sugar content.
What is inositol?

@sleepingstandingup I am 26.. so still young really. How old are you?

Catconfusion · 03/05/2019 14:51

That sounds a really good weight @EssJayyCee and you're young so lots of time. Inositol is a really good supplement for regulating cycles. Also Agnus Castus. I really hope things calm down for you xx

I've got PCOS and tried starting to conceive when I was 32. Had DS when I was 39. My cycles were very irregular and had all sorts of fertility treatment though we didn't go down the IVF route. What did it in the end, finally, was losing more weight and stopping all the charting and the temperature taking and the science and just doing a lot of shagging around when I should ovulate-ish.
Thing was I ended up conceiving well after the window when the charts and science said I should. A bit of throwing caution to the wind did the trick. You can absolutely caught up in the charts etc because you feel somehow you can take control of something that is out with your control. Also my temps never fitted in with what was meant to be happening.

EssJayyCee · 03/05/2019 17:05

I have been having a few weird symptoms today but nothing stays so I think AF may be on her way.
I had breat pain yesterday.
Woke up with heartburn this morning.
Pain in my lower back/hip.

SleepingStandingUp · 03/05/2019 19:20

I'm 37, conceived DS when I was 33, only pregnancy I've ever had x

Catconfusion · 03/05/2019 19:27

Thanks @roundturnandtwohalfhitches there's definitely something to be said for not tracking. I just find it hard to keep up dtd every other day. It's always such a relief when I get confirmed ovulation so we can go back to once/twice a week. Definitely think weight loss can be helpful too. I found my symptoms got better with weight gain but then I was underweight. I'm now overweight but eating healthy filling meals. Xx

So I just had an infuriating appointment with GP. Looks like they might have lost the sperm analysis. We need to call next week to see if it's turned up. Doc didn't know anything about pcos. I asked if I could have blood tests to confirm I have it and he was confused about what tests to do or what cycle day I should have them on. We sorted it in the end but he had to google it. He didn't know what AMH is - it's a marker for egg reserve. The NHS no longer do this test apparently as it's not on the computer system. He also said at our age we wouldn't get a fertility referral if we can't fall pregnant. I was shocked by this as it's our first child we're trying for.

Soooo frustrating! Xx

SleepingStandingUp · 03/05/2019 19:54

Def get a second opinion, your similar age to me, there's something wrong with your body potentially, you have every right to be referred to see a consultant.

Did you take sperm straight to hospital? We got a rey from them directly so possible GP out of the loop?

Catconfusion · 03/05/2019 19:58

@SleepingStandingUp he said 39/40 is the cut off and we're 40 in a few months. Also haven't been trying long enough. He definitely said we couldn't have IVF. It's so annoying as we're trying for our first child and met later in life.

Yes we dropped at the hospital and were told a week until results. It's no ten days and no record of the results. I think we'll call the lab at the hospital on Monday. Xx

OP posts:
SleepingStandingUp · 03/05/2019 21:02

Bank holiday Monday so might need to be Tues. So annoying, thankfully you aren't trying to have ovulation sex whilst he's holding off for his specimen

ah that's really crap re times, i still think they should be willing to send you to at least gynae given you have wonky periods. That might be the way to get a scan of your ovaries?
Also if you're after the cut off ewhy do a sperm sample, so that doesn't make sense either!! Did GP refer you for sperm tests?

Catconfusion · 03/05/2019 21:16

@SleepingStandingUp exactly, we may have lost our shot this cycle because of it as could only dtd two days before O.

The GP ordered it to make sure normal. It probably is to be fair. I don't think they do dna fragmentation tests on the nhs. That's where they look at the chromosomes. So it might not give a full picture.

He said we could have clomid after a year of trying but would be monitored each cycle so presume it might be through the gynae clinic. He said no fertility referrals though as they don't see ladies over 40.

I'm not sure a scan would tell us much. At my miscarriage scan there were no cysts but then they go in pregnancy.

Glad I'm having some bloods though. Shame I had to use google to find out what cycle day to do it on.

I won't be seeing him again!

I'll call on Tuesday!

Good luck for Sunday. Any more symptoms? Xx

SleepingStandingUp · 03/05/2019 23:30

Ah that's sp frustrating about the timing this cycle gone.
Our sperm was basic stuff - motility, % normal ones etc. Even with a genetically wonky first cgild they didn't do anything more in depth.

Sexist but might be worth seeing if you can get a female doc. I had a lovely young female doc who referred me early as by the time the appt come i'd have been trying long enough. Can you afford to go private for the tests?

Catconfusion · 04/05/2019 06:09

@SleepingStandingUp I usually do see female doctors but this was the only appointment I could get. There is a going one, she's heavily pregnant too so might be more helpful.

Genetically wonky? I'm sorry. What is the issue? Xx

OP posts:
SleepingStandingUp · 04/05/2019 11:08

Ooooh yeah get the pregnant one.

DS is wonky, he has 3 copies of Chromosome 12 and 3 copies of Chromosomes 18 in about a third of his cells. He's doing OK now, but he was a critically ill baby for a while and another massive scare at 1. He's nearly 4 and wants to take over the world some day apparently although the new rules under his leadership are fuzzy Grin

I had dream last night about having bad (period) pains and crying at this family get together (I think for my birthday) but not being able to explain to anyone why I was so upset. Then we went out somewhere and I found myself carrying around my mishaped Easter egg that I didn't want to eat.

EssJayyCee · 04/05/2019 12:55

My temperature dropped this morning again and the dotted cross hairs have been removed off my chart again so I really have no idea what my body is doing.

I keep having alot of different sensations in my abdomen that I have never had before which I am curious about... but trying not to get too excited or over think it.

SleepingStandingUp · 04/05/2019 13:10

Omg I think I am.

I just peed on a stick because I'm so convinced I feel like I do when I'm due on

SleepingStandingUp · 04/05/2019 13:10

Sorry.

I got two lines almost immediately

EssJayyCee · 04/05/2019 13:12

@sleepingstandingup Shock that is brilliant news!
I wish I could get the same luck!

I feel like I could be pregnant but I feel like I'm just kidding myself at the same time.

Congratulations! Xx

Catconfusion · 04/05/2019 13:16

Wow @SleepingStandingUp that's fantastic news. Big congratulations! Was it a first response one?

I'm sorry you had so much stress with DS. It sounds like he's doing well though.

It just shows what a difference a few days can make! Xx

OP posts:
Catconfusion · 04/05/2019 13:17

Btw @SleepingStandingUp your dream was clearly an anxiety dream. It's odd what the mind will do. Xx

OP posts:
SleepingStandingUp · 04/05/2019 13:25

Yeah first response.
Google said 10-12 days post ovulation so I did it just to be sure I wasn't as I feel a bit bleurgh and bloated, like I do when due on
Will tell DH later, now I've checked the stick 20 times.

Nearly two years of trying, this is my second cycle on clomid and Tbh I buggered up the first one.

I keeping everything crossed we get six lines between us.

Jesus imagine if I feel so shit cos it's twins. DH would pass out haha.

It says to test in two days so I will do to be sure

Keeping everything crosses for every one x

Catconfusion · 04/05/2019 13:38

I'm sorry @EssJayyCee but it really sounds like you need some support with ovulation. I'd maybe go back in 3 months rather than 6 if it carries on.

I have to say though I tried monitoring my temperature with a thermometer and didn't get a clear rise but that was years ago. Ovusense measures core temperature so it's really accurate. A bit pricey though! Xx

OP posts:
Catconfusion · 04/05/2019 13:41

I'm keeping everything crossed for you @SleepingStandingUp If it's a strong line then should be fine. You can see if the line is darker in a couple of days. Xx

OP posts:
EssJayyCee · 04/05/2019 14:03

You're right... my body is a mess and probably won't do anything on it's own.

I should give up analysing all of these odd sensations and symptoms.
I am just going to give up trying before I even begin.
