TTC after a M/C - is it possible to ovulate when there is HCG in your system?

Hi all,

This is the first time I have ever posted (on anything) but I recently had a miscarriage (D&C 2 weeks ago) and want to try and get pregnant as soon as possible :) I hoped someone out there in a similar situation might be able to help :)
A week after the D&C I had a transvaginal u/s to say all was clear (no clots/ remains etc.
My husband works abroad so we started trying again this weekend ( 2 weeks exactly after D&C). The next day I got a positive OKP and 4 hrs later it was negative and again the next morning. I took this as a positive sign but the following day I had a positive pg test (and again this morning) with faint blue line. I guess this means that I have some amount of HCG left in my system. But what Id like to know is has anyone gotten pregnant when they were still testing positive for HCG ?

I too wondered this when I had a miscarriage and my DH and I started trying straight away. Started having sex 2 weeks after confirmed miscarriage hoping to fall with next ovulation. But I was still getting positive pregnancy tests.
It turns out I did still have pregnancy tissue left (after being told there wasn’t 4 weeks prior) and had to have it surgically removed. I then got a negative pregnancy test 2 days later and ovulated 17 days later (Like normal)

From what I’ve read, HCG leaves the urine later then the blood. So whilst your blood and body doesn’t have the HCG left in it, your urine can still be filtering it out.

I’ve always read lots of other comments from women who fell pregnant again 2 weeks after a miscarriage so just keep trying. At some point your HCG will drop to nothing and you will ovulate x

This was Exactly me a few weeks ago.
I had a mc March 15. I was approx 8 wks. Just happened out of the blue.
I'd assumed everything had passed and was wasn't concerned.
About 10 days later I was getting ov pains and EWCM. I took an opk and it was very positive. I also too a pg test that was positive too.
Confused but desperate to keep ttc we did.
I continued to take pg tests every few days and googled the hell out of the internet! I think I've read everything about getting pg straight after a mc!

I have continued to have positive pg tests till yesterday. 5 days into my first AF after the mc. I think I may have had small bits of mc tissue remaining. I'm inspecting AF very carefully and have seen some tiny grey tissue in the small clots.

For the last five weeks from mc to period I've driven myself mad with all the possibilities.

I'm now waiting for my period to finish and will eagerly keep an eye out for Ov signs.

Thanks so much for your responses! I am also sorry to hear that you have been through it too. I think you don't realise how much you want it until you don;t have it any longer!
I too have driven myself demented! My husband doesn't seem to understand my impatience :) and hence the need to get some other views so its all very much appreciated!
I will keep doing the tests for the next 5 days and if they are still positive I will go back to the dr as I am eager for my cycle to return to normal as soon as possible!! :)
Since yesterday I have been very iritable ( a bit like PMS)and have had some (apologies in advance for the TMI) very light brown clumpy discharge (the after miscarriage discharge cleared up within a week of the d&c). Who knows whats going on in there!! lol!

I use flo.
It got the date my AF arrived right. Probably due to the positive opk.

However my period was supposed to finish yesterday. I thought it had but back ache kicked in again this arvo and a flo of bright red clotty blood has resumed 🙄

Lots of peeps on here told me to be patient and I took zero comfort in the advice as to me that was obvious. I wanted to be one of those who got pg straight away.
Now I have actually waited a feel stronger to wait for OV signs.

The reality is that waiting is the only option.

I got pg totally by surprise 1 week after my D&C - she’s 13 now!
It was mentally very very hard as I felt I hadn’t grieved properly and a lot of people thought it meant I was ok ( I wasn’t). Plus I was pg for a year

I know I need to relax as there’s nothing I can do and I think analyzing every sign and “symptom “ can come to no good ! It’s only been almost 3 weeks so I shouldn’t rush. Me being me I just did a digital pg test to see how much HCG could be left ( dependent on the no of weeks ) and it said between 1-2 weeks (that’s 5-50 HCG) so hopefully it will be gone soon and all will return to normal !! Never thought I’d be so keen to see AF but hoping she arrives in the next couple of weeks !! 😊😊🤞 Glad to know you are feeling a bit better about it all now ( the waiting that is !)

I bought some internet cheapy tests. Did them every few days and stuck them together in a note pad.
It gave me something to do. Felt over the moon to get my 1st neg one.

Perhaps I will do something similar!! :L anything to keep my mind occupied. Feeling much more positive today!! :)

Hi @L1zz13 - funny I was only thinking of you this morning! How is all going for you?

I got my first neg pg test on Sat morning :) and at the same time I have had 3 consecutive days of 'flashing smiley (high fertility) on the clear blue advanced OKP - the flashing smiley picks up the estrogen levels which rise before ovulation ... but I am really not sure anymore!! I have lost hope for this month because I think my body is too all over the place.
Have been dizzy and nauseous the last two days so convinced its all the changes in hormones and trying not to even consider that by some miracle I am once again pg! :L

Just an update - just back from seeing my Gynae and she advised that my HCG is likely still not at 0 as urine tests are need 50mg to give a positive result. She wont give me a blood test till the end of May. She said I would not ovulate untill levels reach zero which could take another two week. It was slightly disheartening to hear as that would mean over 7 weeks in total from D&C to first AF!
She also said to disregard any OPK results as they are not reliable after a m/c. None of which I was hoping to hear if I'm honest!

Oh well !I'll be patient I guess!!

Yes. I had a MC at 6 weeks PG 7 years ago and a month later I was PG again xx

@Faithandlove Af lasted 6 days and has now finished. On Cd11 and have the beginnings of Fw!
Despite how hard it is to wait that's all you can do. X
Af will return at some point and you'll be able to resume project getting pregnant!

Im in a similar boat :(

I had a mmc and had medical management on 15th April (a day before i was due my 12 week scan)
Was on cd10 after medical managemenf and still bleeding so hospital scanned and removed sac that had stuck at my cervix, carried on bleeding until cd 13.
I did an opk cd14 that showed positive but im hoping this was just leftover hormones as I had no chance to dtd. Opk the following day was negative... confusing.

Currently cd16 and will test opk everyday. Still negative for now.

Have you taken any pregnancy tests to check hgc?

@l1zz13 yeah im having negative hcg tests so really hoping it was just something that threw the opk off as it was so soon after the miscarriage.
Im going to carry on testing and hopefully will get another positive opk before AF!

Good idea. Still them in a notebook and compare. Keep us posted.
I testing opks 3-4 times a day! O I'm sure is around the corner.
It's like starting anew with tracking this cycle. I'm sure it's going to be different from pre mc cycles. I only had one month of tracking from stopping bc and falling pregnant. Body is showing me the right symptoms- I think. Really hope I'm not caught up in symptom spotting!

What cycle day are you currently on?
Before mc i ovulated on cd18 but like you i got pregnant straight after coming off bc so only tracked one month!
If i count the 1st day of mc from the medical management as cd1 then im on cd17

So sorry to hear about your loss ! Agree with @L1zz13 , things can be off after miscarriage . I also got pg in my first month of trying but since miscarriage (am now 25 days post d&c) and have been having all sorts of mixed results with pg tests only turning comp negative 4 days ago and this morning a very very faint line reappeared on one ( but not sure how this is even possible ) . I think the best ( and only thing unfortunately $ to do is keeping trying as much as you can and once AF comes start testing again as that should reset things to normal !! It has taken me the last 25 days of multiple confusing opks and pg tests to come to this conclusion . My dr also told me yest to just ignore their results until next month. :( but in the meantime I will just keep ttc

after my erpc I ovulated a week later than usual. Then I feel preg on 3rd cycle. Emotionally I was in turmoil until this third cycle. As I was desperate to cling onto a new pregnancy. Once I finally started to heal emotionally I think it gave my body a chance to conceive.
There's a thread TTC after MC which has been the best support. Some of the ladies posting on this thread are on that one. Everyone's been through a similar thing and it's a great place to vent and ask questions. Good luck with your journey and 🤞🏻for a sticky bean!! X
