Long cycle / short luteal phase

Hi all,
I was just wondering whether anyone might be in the same boat as me and can offer some advice/success stories?!

My DH and I have been ttc for several months now without any success.
Unfortunately my cycles have been really irregular (ranging from 31 days to 51 days) since coming off bcp last summer.

I have tracked ovulation and I do appear to be ovulating on my own but to add a big spanner into the works, it looks as though my LP is only 9/10 days.

I can find a lot of info about short cycles with a short LP, but not so much on long cycles with short LP. Anyone able to help?

There are 10 in a packet Boat I do have some cheap ones too though. These ones are supposed to pinpoint the 4 most fertile days xx

boatrace30 · 07/05/2017 10:12

I'd start with the cheap ones from day 10 then go with the clear blue from day 20. That way you won't risk missing it

hopingforabfp · 07/05/2017 10:30

That's a good idea boat I think I'm going to do that xx

sophie987 · 08/05/2017 18:06

Hi all, my cycle is 30-31 days, regular, and I generally ovulate on day 19. I get spotting from 8 dpo, so I don't know whether there is still any hope beyond that- does anyone else have the same problem? x

boatrace30 · 08/05/2017 19:07

If it's just spotting then you are probably still fine (I assume that full af comes around 12dpo?)
How long have you been TTC?

sophie987 · 08/05/2017 20:21

Thank you, that's really reassuring. Yes, full af comes at 12 Dpo. I am on month 6 TTC. I know it's not that long, but it's really easy to start overanalysing...

boatrace30 · 08/05/2017 21:43

Don't worry, I think anything beyond one month is long enough to start worrying! You spend so much of your life trying not to get pregnant, expecting that one missed pill spells disaster, then you try and find out it's not so easy!

sophie987 · 08/05/2017 21:57

Exactly!

cinderrose · 08/05/2017 22:03

Hi ladies, just checking in. I had a 43 day cycle this time and made it 10 days with the LP, which means my cycles are gradually getting longer again (ffs!!!) but bizarrely I was happy my LP made it to double digits. Even though 10 days probably isn't great. I have ordered b complex 100 vitamins and will start taking them as soon as they arrive.

@catmum87 your hen party sounds amazing :) so great that you have the distraction of an upcoming wedding! Thanks for the info regarding acupuncture, I'm off to google moxa sticks.....!!

boatrace30 · 10/05/2017 19:54

Hi all. AF got me today, bang on time. Not 100% sure if I'm dpo8,9or10. Either way it's short again 🙁

cinderrose let me know how you get on with B100, Im taking B50 and feel like it may have made me ovulate sooner this month. Going to stick with it.

CatMum87 · 12/05/2017 10:24

Hi ladies, been away for a while as work has been super busy and I'm in that rubbish period waiting for ovulation to happen................on the hunt for those little symptoms and signs!

Uh sorry to hear AF got you @Boatrace30 :( what month is this now for you? Every month it gets harder doesn't it- but then as we know there are the happy endings when people do get pregnant with a short luteal phase so we need to hang on to that!

If i knew there was something that i could do to lengthen my luteal phase I'd do it! It's the not knowing what will help/what won't is so hard and everyone reacts to pills/potions differently! Glad the vits are working for you :) I tried the b-50 complex a while back and it seemed to make my cycle much longer, LP the same although less days spotting. I'd also get really tired just after taking it so i don't think it agreed with me!

@cinderrose - glad your lp is a little longer, yay to the double digits! The wedding certainly is a distraction ( i sometimes question what i am going to do after lol).......but then i got hit by a baby bomb this morning and whilst I am trying to look to all the positives in my life at the moment, it still stings, it really stings and it all just hits home :(!

hopingforabfp · 12/05/2017 11:46

Hi all, I took a cheapie test this morning and the line was fairly dark so I took a cb one and it had an error? The Manual symbol came up. I used another test and the same thing happened. Has anyone had this before? Now I've just wasted two tests and I still don't know if I'm fertile or not!! Xx

boatrace30 · 12/05/2017 19:11

hoping, never used clearblues, but with the cheapies the line has to be the same or darker to confirm you are having the LH surge.

catmum -cycle 8 now, month 10, first baby friend had her second today, very happy for her but also intensely jealous. We started trying at the same time after having our first at the same time, it's so hard isn't it. But I know I'm lucky to have DD, it's just I so desperately want her to have a sibling, which makes me want it almost even more than the first time.

bows - was our appt today? Really hope you weren't effected by the cyber attack. Xx

Bows85 · 13/05/2017 09:38

Hey, sorry I've been really quiet on here recently.

Have been going through a bit of a shitty time. Was over the moon to get my BFP two weeks ago after the spotting I had didn't turn into AF.

However, it wasn't meant to be as I started bleeding just over a week later and it was confirmed that I was miscarrying. Totally heartbroken and still am. Very worried for what this means in the future, but trying to take the positives out of the worst situation.

My appt with consultant was supposed to be on 18th but I cancelled when I got my positive test. My doc is going to refer me again but I'll be so annoyed if I have to start from square 1.

Hope all is well with everyone here Smile

Oh Bows, I'm so sorry. I truly can imagine how devastated you are having nearly been there with DD.
Just so sorry FlowersFlowersFlowers
No words will make you feel better, I just hope you don't wait too long for that appointment. Xxxxx

Bows85 · 13/05/2017 17:09

Thanks @boatrace30 Yeah, I am hoping my GP can pull some strings and get me in sooner...not sure it works like that though!

I'll hopefully start feeling less crappy soon and we can think about jumping on the ttc train again... you never know what's around the corner.

OP posts:
CatMum87 · 17/05/2017 11:47

@Bows85- so sorry you are going through this Flowers. Have been thinking about you though this tough time. Let's hope that your GP can arrange your appointment sooner and you won't have the wait you had last time.

@Boatrace30- have you had your appointment through yet? I couldn't stop crying when I heard H2B's friends were expecting a baby, that makes me horrible doesn't it! I think he gets how i feel now as we are now the only couple in that circle of friends who haven't got children or one on the way :(

But then I've got my best friend who has no option but to save up for IVF as she married an older guy who already has kids and has had the op. Puts my situation into perspective a little as we arent quite there yet and i can cling on the hope that it will happen naturally.

So I am CD 16 here- really frustrating as last cycle I ovulated on day 18 ish. I've had no signs that anything is happening down there either......may need to have a little word with her lol, little gentle encouragement! xx

cinderrose · 17/05/2017 14:42

@bows85 I was so sorry to read your sad news. I hope you are able to have space to process and take care of yourself. And that you have your appointment soon.

Sorry also to hear about the babybombs - even when they are not unexpected it's still shit. It's easy to catastrophize and feel like it'll never happen when everyone else is popping out babies!

I had my GP app and she was really nice - has sent me for day 4 and day 21(40?) blood tests and a scan for PCOS, she said this was the only potential issue she was considering at this stage. She was a bit blase about the short luteal phase - questioned whether I'm sure of when I ovulate Hmm I figured one step at a time - it'll take maybe a couple of months to have the tests and scans so we'll see how that goes first.

Bows85 · 17/05/2017 16:27

Hi all
Thanks for all the kind messages. It's totally shit and still feel very sad, but I'm ok! My DH has been lovely and has really looked after me. Just got to keep the faith....

Sorry that you don't have any signs of o @CatMum87 But it's still early days (for us!) so it could happen any time. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Your GP sounds like she's putting you forward for all the right things @cinderrose Good luck with it all. Although it takes time, it's good to know you're actually getting stuff done!

boatrace30 · 17/05/2017 19:02

Hi everyone. I spent this morning having cuddles with my friends five day old baby and was proud of myself for not crying!
My appt still not sorted, I got an e referral today but all the appointments I could make were during our weeks holiday.
I'm expecting it will end up being mid august.

Bows, still feeling very sad for you. It's such a horrible thing anytime, let alone when you've been trying for so long.

catmum, as bows said, still early days!! And cinder, glad the process has started for you. Short LP is often linked to pcos. Hopefully you don't have it, but at least you will know and it won't be severe pcos as you do have periods. Xx

Bows85 · 17/05/2017 20:33

FFS another babybomb has just landed 🙄 So frustrating!

Well done for staying strong around the new baby @boatrace30 I know how hard that is.

Just popping on to say hi. I had this problem for an entire year coming off the pill - plus irregular long cycles. TTC was a bastard. Two things that help - quit anything with sweeteners in it, and go full fat on dairy products. Sounds like woo but it bloody works, there was a big Harvard study done and low fat yogurts, milk etc screw with your hormones. I saw one of the doctors involved in that recently who prescribed me full fat ice cream every day. I thought, well why not? Gives me something to do whilst I wait for Clomid. LP started lengthening by 3 months, BFP on 4th month - DS is now 7. Good luck women...

Bows85 · 18/05/2017 08:58

Ooh...ice cream for medicinal reasons? I'm in! Thanks for the advice 👍🏼

CatMum87 · 22/05/2017 15:03

Hi ladies.......just checking in after having a weekend with rubbish Internet connection whilst away.....lost without it!

So I did the triathlon yesterday Grin .....and treated myself to some yummy ice cream afterwards! Good tip lol! Then today i got a positive opk.....happy days!

Hope to ovulate soon then can try the herbs I've been given from the accupuncture. I asked what they were but she said it's a mixture made up for me individually so erm I've no idea what the he'll I'll be taking.....slightly worrying, but we'll try anything right!

How are you lovely ladies getting on?

Looks set to be a nice hot week! Xx
