Getting ready for baby challenge

Hi all, we are planning on TTC in the new year. Before that I want to get a bit healthier lose three stone and generally be in the best shape possible to get pregnant and run around after a baby. Is anyone else in the same boat? Would you be up for a little thread to keep us all on track? Planning on doing a dry January as a kick start and then will be dragging my arse to the gym after Christmas as well. Very open to suggestion and ideas to shift the bulge. Would be good to have a few buddies though. Anyone fancy joining in?

Mrsc bought it for my phone, and wasn't expensive. I really enjoyed it, but think I'd also like to look at others. It was mostly about using information to make decisions about pregnancy. Lots of stats and references to studies, so might not be for everyone!

DancingUnicorn · 08/01/2017 18:16

Hi Jupiter! Oo, does that mean you've already spoken to someone at docs office about ttc? I was never sure who to see/what to say! Was it useful at all?!

Hello Jupiter welcome to the crazy baby house!

Yes! And I would totally recommend it if you have GP/nurse you trust.

I went to see the practice nurse as she's really normal and sensible and basically went in and said that I've been losing weight, my BMI is still 30.4 but we want to start trying for a baby... I asked her if that was a bad idea as still have weight to lose and therefore should I delay for a while yet. She told me to get on with it as BMI isn't everything, I am healthy (blood pressure etc all good) and that she is more than happy for me to keep cutting calories whilst TTC (but should be taking in around 1500-1600 a day rather than the 1200-1300 I have been on for last 6 months.) She also told me that women far bigger than me have perfectly healthy pregnancies and that delaying for another year may be more detrimental in terms of my fertility given I'm over 30 already.

She has prescribed me 5mg folic acid daily to take (guidelines recommend this for women with BMI of over 30) but that I can go down to 400mcg if and when my weight drops to below a BMI of 30.

I know some people might think that her advice is irresponsible but ultimately she was advocating eating as healthily as possible and that some further weight loss will be inevitable as part of that process. I think that sounds good. Also she commented that being 6ft and quite muscular would make my BMI score a bit inaccurate anyway and given I carry all my weight on my bum and thighs I don't have the same risks re diabetes as more apple shaped women.

I've spent far too much of my adult life beating myself up about my weight and honestly it was really reassuring to be told that I'm doing okay, and basically to keep doing what I'm doing.

I am madly excited about TTC :)

Sorry this has become a total essay!!!

Thanks timefortea I promise to stop the v.v.long posts soon :)

confusedat23 · 08/01/2017 18:39

Hey Jupiter you can join me and HB as cycle twins! I ov'd yesterday and i think HB ov'd today! I am now in a hopefully happy accidental TWW

Also about the BMI thing lady if you are ready for a baby you go for it! Healthy people can be slightly overweight too! I have a BMI of 27 which is overweight because i am just over 12 stone and 5ft6 but if I said i was a size 10-12 people would say i was fine! Also I had a friend who lost weight and dress sizes whilst preggo because she found her baby as more incentive to cut the sugar!

confusedat23 · 08/01/2017 18:42

So ladies... who is thinking about Breast Feeding?

HeyJupiter · 08/01/2017 18:44

Ohhh confused, would love to be cycle twins with you and HB - might the longest wait in the world so we can keep each other sane.

Thanks for the kind words about BMI - you're totally right!! Plus if I'm anything like the other women in my family morning sickness may be another way to lose a few lbs (eeek)

DancingUnicorn · 08/01/2017 18:45

Confused I plan to, if I'm able to!

HeyJupiter · 08/01/2017 18:46

Definitely would like to breastfeed if I can!

MrsC2017 · 08/01/2017 19:22

jupiter welcome, fun times ahead! I'm also on my first month, just waiting for AF to go so I can get going!
I asked my gp about ttc too and she said no reason why not so long as I have been on the folic acid, she's having me in for bloods this cycle, she said ovulation + 7 days for that if anyone is thinking of it and they will check everything then (not entirely sure what everything means) but I can carry on ttc regardless this cycle!
unicorn I love me some stats so will give that a go.
I didn't BF first time round, I'm in Ireland and we have the lowest uptake in Europe but tbh u get absolutely no support afterwards, no midwife visits etc like u get in the UK so that's probably why so if the government got the finger out with some policies in the area they could probably manage to improve that. I would like to try this time around though, my DS was an absolute savage though, GP said she never seen anything like him and not to tell anyone but that she was glad I wasn't breastfeeding coz I would be sucked dry Grin

Oysterbabe · 08/01/2017 19:59

I tried with DD but she was preterm and in NICU being tube fed at first and she never quite got the hang of it. She was so tiny it was too hard work for her. She had expressed milk and looking back now I don't know how I managed it. I expressed every 3 hours, 24 hours a day for 6 months. That's the kind of luxury you can only manage for a first child, no time for that when you have a toddler to look after too. I'll be doing everything possible to get the 2nd one to breastfeed.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 08/01/2017 20:27

Welcome Jupiter that's so exciting! Glad you got the all clear to start trying. I feel like what she said about not waiting another year vindicates my choice too on the wrong side of 30 (was debating waiting another year for work / house / reasons but they aren't insurmountable).

I have an appointment with my GP on the 17th to tell him and discuss my past anxiety issues etc (pretty much sorted now but I want to check they have all the right info etc, & check my medical records which I know are wrong!).

Confused I think also because this will be DH first baby he is way more nervous than me! He's been around since DD was small but not teeny.

I breastfed DD for three months & would have liked to do it for longer but my milk dried up as soon as I introduced mixed feeding (1 or 2 bottles a day). This time I'd like to do it for the full six months I'm at home, I never was able to express so baby will need to move into formula by the time I go back to work.

confusedat23 · 08/01/2017 21:18

Jupiter the best thing to do is completely obsess and make baby wish lists act like it never happened and carry on as usual. On Dpo 1 and so far I have felt sick have sore boobs bloated (btw i am joking about these being real symptoms)

Inteteresting to see we all would... i just watched this documentary and it said that baby formula is pumped full of sugar to get kids addicted from a young age and now im scared not to bf! The other side is i can be quite a sociably awkward person and i am not sure how i would deal with BF in public or around in laws (my family would be fine)

MrsC2017 · 08/01/2017 21:32

confused the thoughts of my FIL seeing my boobs is just too much Hmm

DancingUnicorn · 08/01/2017 21:39

Omg! Fil and boobs. I may change my mind!

confusedat23 · 08/01/2017 21:44

Oh no!! I didn't mean to put you off Mrs and Dancing but that was exactly my thoughts!!!

DancingUnicorn · 08/01/2017 21:49

Don't worry confused I don't think that'll put me off. I'll figure something out!

MrsC2017 · 08/01/2017 21:52

Ha me either, DH has a big family so they'll all have an eyeful Confused

confusedat23 · 08/01/2017 21:55

I didn't know whether to express to use whilst out or whether to combine both formula and breastfeeding. my friend was told by midwife that these days it doesn't make much of a difference but moneywise it does!

DancingUnicorn · 08/01/2017 22:02

I think I'd like to express a little anyway so oh can feed. Not that I've thought about it much It being my first, I think I'm going to have to remind myself that I'll need to be flexible and not stress if my ideal choice doesn't go to plan!!

Oysterbabe · 08/01/2017 22:02

Tbh with the right clothing people really can't see much at all, unless they're really trying, and hopefully FIL won't!

DancingUnicorn · 08/01/2017 22:03

That's good to know oyster!

buzzmoon · 08/01/2017 22:08

Hi all, is it too late to join? I came off the pill on Xmas day. Getting married in July so not trying till later in the year (not sure when to incase it happened and I don't fit in my dress!) haven't had any sign of AF yet!

MrsC2017 · 08/01/2017 22:22

Welcome buzzmoon! Exciting times for you, are you excited for your big day?
