I wonder why it's not licensed for ovulation induction in the UK? Is it as newer drug?

bananafish81 · 27/03/2016 20:30

It's not licensed in the UK I believe due to concerns about side effects and one single (possibly dodgy) study about potential long term effects on babies born

It's used in cancer treatment and it's perfectly legal to prescribe it off label for fertility (so at the Dr's discretion), it's just NICE guidance that says Clomid should be used for ovulation induction

It's used widely in the US, which is a massively litigious society, therefore I wouldn't imagine there are any significant risks, or there would be Femara lawsuits all over the place

bananafish81 · 27/03/2016 20:31

And yes it is a much newer drug. Clomid has been prescribed for ovulation induction since the 60s

Shellbell0403 · 27/03/2016 20:37

Letrozole only stays in the system for the time your taking it and it's out of your system 3/4 days after you finish. It reduces multiples as they put you on a low dose to start, it starts 2.5. Plus it's not hot as much of a effect on your lining as clomid does.
I can't have multiples due to he shape of my womb.
It's used for breast cancer etc but they have started to use it for fertility.
The only side effect I really had was hot flushes

bananafish81 · 27/03/2016 20:50

That's really interesting Shell - I asked my consultant about Femara and he said the risk of multiples was the same as Clomid, the main benefit was, as you say, it doesn't have so much of an impact on the lining or CM.

Neither drug should induce multiples at a low dose - and follicle tracking means that if you were to develop two mature follicles with either drug you could choose to abstain that month to completely avoid any risk of twins. Great that your Dr is so willing to think outside the box, Clomid's effect on the lining is crap, as it can 'work' (ie it makes you ovulate) but simultaneously make it impossible to conceive if it thins the lining too much

Shellbell0403 · 27/03/2016 21:43

It's so catch 22 isn't it banana? My first cycle I was on 2.5 and had no mature follicles, on my second cycle I went from 1.1 and 1.0 to 1.8 and 1.6 and then 2.3 and 1.9 in the space of a day in between!! That's why the 'advised' to avoid... So just waiting to see what happens..

Next cycle they are poss going to do 2.5 one day then 5mg day two etc for the 5 days... Nothing is ever simple :(

How are you doing Banana

Hello all. Long time no speak. Sorry to come crashing back in, but feel like I need to speak to others in the same place this week.

We've spoken to GP and are being referred to assisted conception clinic (apparently the fancy name for fertility clinic!) Husband is going to do his business on thursday morning at the andrology clinic for sperm analysis and then after that it will be my turn.

We're hoping still for that elusive 'we got referred for tests and then got pregnant' BFP. Feeling a bit crappy about it all though, even though we knew it would probably come to this.

Anyway, hope you're all ok. Sorry for not being around much and then just popping up.

CwtchyQ · 29/03/2016 07:37

Hi susurration - sorry that you're feeling a bit shit, completely understandable though. I have de-lurked because your post resonated with me. I am just slightly ahead of you, I resisted being referred and still kind of have as my GP offered to prescribe met as a last-ditch attempt (I already have a DD so all that is available to me on referral is met and clomid), so I felt like it would save time. It's hard to admit defeat, but ultimately the help is there so it's worth taking. It doesn't mean that you need loads of intervention, maybe just a little push to get things going. Anyway - I just wanted to say you are definitely not alone, and good luck Smile you're closer now than you were to getting things sorted!

susurration · 29/03/2016 13:20

Thanks for replying CwtchyQ I know it's probably a positive thing that we're going to be tested and hopefully get a little push in the right direction.

I think what's bothering me though is the handful of people we have told have overwhelmingly been over excited about it, saying things like 'oh you'll have a baby in no time' or as one of my apparently close friends put it 'oh i bet you get knocked up before you get treatment, it happens all the time!' Um well no, it doesn't and it's not as simple as just getting IVF or whatever and getting a baby. I think thats when it hit me that actually it feels like an incredibly lonely process already. I feel like we're facing down the barrel of the loaded gun knowing some of the stats and facts and figures for fertility treatments, but other people seem to assume its easy and almost 100% effective.

We'll be ok, but I just feel lonely already and we're not even on the road yet so to speak.

Feeling rubbish today. Period is due shortly so it's got 2 days to progress one way or another

Leta86 · 29/03/2016 18:04

Hi guys... need a bit of support... My H2B and I have been trying for a while, I'm PCOS, he's normal, we were both a bit overweight but managed to drop 2 stone each in the last couple of months. On vitamins and supplements, I'm awaiting lap&dye as had bad appendectomy at 13. I can spend months w/o period or get one every 2 weeks, but no ovulation. I just started OPK in february and March was actually +++, so we DTD, tried to relax during the 2ww and when POAS at CD28-32 some were light positive (4/10), all in the morning. Had a blood test today... nothing... just found out my blood beta is

MagpieCursedTea · 30/03/2016 09:22

Hi Shell I'm feeling pleased as I've lost a bit more weight this week. I'm hoping the met combined with weight loss will lead to ovulation. How's things with you?

Shellbell0403 · 30/03/2016 09:49

Hey ladies :)

Drew I hope that's not the case!! Will keep my fingers crossed for you!

DrewOB1 · 30/03/2016 09:55

How many cycles is it for you? It's my 10th neg ( not counting chemical p)

Shellbell0403 · 30/03/2016 10:22

Drew We have been trying since sept 14 xx

Nurse15 · 30/03/2016 10:46

Hi everyone! Have received my letter to book my hysterosalpingogram (pretty sure that's not spelt right!) on the first day of my next cycle so rang them and they said that it's done between cd 6 and 10. Hopefully be able to get his booked in the next month or so depending on work and if I can get the time off etc! Has anyone else had this done? How where you after it? Do you get offered sedation (midazolam?) before it? I'm not that keen on the whole idea of it!

Shellbell0403 · 30/03/2016 11:06

I had that done... To check the tubes etc? No they don't offer anything, they told me to take paracetamol 30 mins before it..

Dunlin1987 · 30/03/2016 11:23

I had that done in January. I took paracetamol before the procedure. For me, it was just like menstrual cramps. Nothing to worry about!!

Nurse15 · 30/03/2016 11:55

Did you need any time off work after it guys? Worried about it, I am not a good patient lol!

Dunlin1987 · 30/03/2016 12:19

I took the day off for it. I am a teacher and the last thing I wanted was to be running around after 30 kids :) I had my hot water bottle shortly after the procedure as the cramps continued for a short while after but was fine for the rest of the day. They do say you may need to rest afterwards.
