Hi Nicki,

I have an ERPC (another name for D&C). The actual procedure was over with in 1/2 an hour and I had no pain after, just discomfort.

The chances of infection are small, but they need to point them out to you. For me it was preferable to the wait and mega bleeding I thought might be involved with a natural miscarriage.

I think I bled for about 5-6days after, but not too heavily, although it's different for everyone.

All-in-all it was less painful and unpleasant than some of the poking about they did at the fertility clinic. Good luck x

LittlePolly · 06/09/2006 15:40

Hi Nicki
So sorry that circumstances have brought you to this thread. (((hugs))) How far into your pregnancy were you?
I had an ERPC for my mc at about 12 weeks back in May. I was worried about the anaesthetic too (although I had less time to think about it as they whipped me into surgery a few hours after I was scanned), but it was fine. I think they must use a pretty light dose as I was told it did not HAVE to be done under anaesthetic (I think you can have an epidural??) and I was awake and with it about 15 or 20 mins after the op and home soon after. The anaesthetist will probably see you beforehand, so you can always talk to him/her. There's a risk of infection with any medical procedure I guess, but they do tell you signs to watch out for. I had lightish bleeding for 2-3 weeks after the op. As Angsthase said, everyone's different. It can take your periods a little while to settle down again too.
My hospital gave me and DH counselling afterwards which was very helpful and our particular NHS trust organises a joint cremation service for the remains of mcs that are dealt with in this way. It might be worth you asking your hospital about whether they do this if you think it would help you, as they don't always volunteer the info.

When is the op? Good luck and take care of yourself.
x

Nicki10 · 06/09/2006 15:52

The Op is on Friday I have to be there in the morning and then htey just work their way down the list. I have also chosen to have the d&c because I didn't want to wait another 2 weeks to see if it would happen naturally.

I was 9+4 when I found out but they think hte baby stopped growing at about 5-6 weeks so they seemed to think it propbably wouldn't happen naturally anyway. I glad you didn't suffer to much pain afterwards and the bleeding wasn't too bad.

I worry about infection because my family seems to be prone to it everytime my mum has been into hospital she has picked up a bad infection and had to stay in and the same with my dad. Just worried that if I got an infection of the womb that it could make me infertile.

Angsthase · 06/09/2006 16:04

Nicki, did you speak about your concerns with the EPU? Mention them again on Friday, so they know about them.

Hope it goes ok, I'm sure you will be fine. Try not to worry too much. x

Nicki10 · 06/09/2006 16:15

I've decided to put it to the back of my mind and plough on with work so I don't fall behind by Friday! Although I am going shopping now!!

andi0411 · 06/09/2006 16:43

Hi Nicki i just wanted to say I've had a d & c and 2 natural m/c's and of the 2 options the d and c is the least painful, less bloody(sorry) and quickest physically- though no diff emotionally in my opinion.
The reason i had natural m/c the last 2 times is because i have a bad reaction to anaesthetic and also i didn't want to keep having 'ops'- but ..oh i don't know what else to say except i'll be thinking about you- it's not good whatever - but we're here for you if you need to talk. xx

babyfettle · 06/09/2006 19:23

Hi Nikki

I had 2 ERCPs following my miscarriage at 9 weeks back in Feb. I had 2 as the first wasn't completely successful, so I carried on bleeding, intermittently quite heavily for about 8 weeks before they rescanned me and discovered retained products and scheduled me for further ERCP, after the 2nd one, I bled for 1 day! Pain was minimal, more so with the 2nd one. Aneasthetic is really really light, if you are worried talk to the anesthetist about it when they come round to pre-assess you. I had a bad reaction to an anaesthetic 20 years ago, so they gave me a really light one this time (Like a very large glass of wine, she said and she was exactly right!).

Have to say after both, I woke up feeling really refreshed like I'd had a long sleep and went home later that evening, so didn't have to stay over.

I HTH, but have to admit that I was terrified before my first one - cried my eyes out, worrying about the infection risk etc, as they had scared me somewhat at the EPU pointing out the risks to me, but I realised afterwards that the risks are very low, but as they are there, they are obliged to point them out to you.

Take care and try not to worry

Hope everyone else is ok - anyone got any ideas for delaying ovulation for 2 weeks? Still not got my temp rise for this cycle, of course I know it is not possible, but it would nice if I could delay it somehow until DH gets back for his week's leave - maybe by spending the next 2 weeks in a freezer?

Sorry, tough few days at work, think I'm going mad!

rubles · 06/09/2006 20:28

Only drastic things babyfettle like moving house. or you could go and live in a war zone - that might get you stressed enough.

babyfettle · 06/09/2006 21:03

Thanks, Rubles - quite stressed enough having DH in a war zone at the moment, that I think I'd ought to stay home and let nature take its course. But annoyingly enough just after DH is back in November and we can start TTC again, we are moving house [again!] - hadn't really thought through the stress involved in that on TTC attempts!

Uki · 06/09/2006 23:32

Hi Niki

Hope everything goes ok on friday, [hugs]] to you.
Don't worry about infection to much, that's just very unlucky.
although having been through an emergency op for a suspected eptopic. I was glad i made the sugery wait while i talked to the surgeon. I think it's good to talk to the Surgeon (a little paranoid) maybee but they see you as a real person then and know your feelings. I was worried they were going to remove my tube without it being totally necessary!!! Anyway it turned out to just be a m/c and just had a D&C.

Hi andi ,rubles, babyf and angth

Uki · 06/09/2006 23:34

BTY your can also get an infection from natural m/c if anything is left behind.

Hi all. Just to let you know I had my scan today (8+6) and there it was with a really strong heartbeat. Never seen one with a heartbeat before.

rubles · 07/09/2006 10:00

Hi all. I'm 11 dpo today - AF due on Sunday according to ovulation date but started getting cramps last night which is very early. Felt really down about it & don't know what my body is doing. I don't seem to have a regular pre-menstrual pattern these days.
I hate the idea of having another 4 days of 'is AF coming/is AF not coming' as that is just too stressful. My temp is still up this morning, so it's not imminent.

rubles · 07/09/2006 10:01

Oh wow Smole - that is FABULOUS. Excellent news. Do you have another scan booked or do you wait for the 12 week one now?

Smole · 07/09/2006 10:06

I'm waiting for the 12 week one now. I'll probably be dreading that one too when it comes.

rubles · 07/09/2006 10:11

It must have been incredibly frightening today for you. Did you cry when you saw your little beanie's heartbeat flashing away?

Smole · 07/09/2006 10:25

I was just stunned. I thought it was going to be bad news. The scanographer said the heartbeat was strong. Obviously no guarantees but she said it was as good as it gets. She said that since I was passed 8 weeks I've passed some of the problems that could occur and now have an 80% chance of success. Oh and it moved! {grin].

Smole thats great news. A heartbeat. Wow . Really happy this pg is a sticky one. I'm sure you'll be fine. The 12 week one will just put your mind further at rest.

LittlePolly · 07/09/2006 12:01

Hi all

Smole - wonderful news! That must be so reassuring.

Rubles - sorry you're feeling low Try to look after yourself and don't stress too much.

Nicki - I hope it goes ok tomorrow. I'll be thinking of you. And remember you don't have to just keep ploughing on - it is normal and right to feel crap about it and sometimes it's better to let it show. The shopping sounds like a good plan tho!

Time4tea - are you still popping in? Thank you for your post about my ongoing dilemma with depression/ttc/medication etc. I've started with my CBT and feel quite hopeful about it, but I'm still thinking I might need to resort to drugs and put off ttc for a while If you're not going to be on this thread much now, I was wondering whether I could CAT you if I needed to ask anything about meds?? Would you mind? You've been so supportive - thank you.

Love to all.

Uki · 07/09/2006 12:53

Hi everyone
I am starting to wonder if i will ever get AF it has been 37 days since m/c.
with my last 2 m/c i have got AF at 35 days then normal 28 dyas after that.
I just want my body to be normal again . i guess there is a slight chance i'm preg, but dh thinks that would be a bit strange. I guess i should test but the truth is if i am preg, i want to hide away and not know till 12 weeks!!!!
you probably all know that feeling, i wish i didn't the other weird thing is that it is a full moon now and all my AF's and m/c happen when it is a full moon, so surely something should happen.
Does anyone else follow the moon?

Hi ladies!!

smole what fab news - to see the tiny baby's heart beat- i've never seen that and i feel so happy for you i really do. Loads of sticky stuff to you.
Uki- 35 days was my top wait for af to return- do you think it'd be worth doing a test? i know you don't want to know -fear etc- but what do you think?Fingers crossed it's what you want x

time4tea · 07/09/2006 18:31

Smole - greatnews - the stats are good once you see a heartbeat at 8 weeks (see Lesley Regan's very good new book on pregnancy etc - what a great woman! I found out loads of things that would have really reassured me in my first pregnancy, like the difference between cramp and DVT, and what are "normal" baby movements - can't recommend her books enough)

LittleFrog - glad to CAT (whatever it is!!) (presumably meeting up off line, on telephone, whatever) hope all going well.

Uki, I know what you mean about needing AF to come... all I can suggest is try to plan good things to do to fill the next few days. there was a lovely full moon last night, lovely to look at.

Oinker - how's it going with diet? thinking of you

Niki, hope it all went well today. I found the D&C fine, as most of the other ladies here did. Take care over the next few days (((( hugs))))
