Coil being removed next week...

Hi everyone,

Im new on here and am booked in to have my coil removed next wed as me and my hubby plan to start ttc our first child together (i have 2 from a previous relationship and he has none).

I would love to hear from anyone who has had experience with coils - how long did it take for your first af after it was removed? How long did it take to get pregnant? Or are u trying now?

As my first 2 pregnancies happened by accident due to missing a pill a few times, in the back of my mind im thinking i should get pregnant pretty quickly but im tying my hardest to push this thought away as it could take months and months and u just dont know. Im just sp excited to get this thing out and start on our ttc journey together :-)

Oh can I join you? I've just been to the GP last week to get a referral to get mine out too!

Threads have flipped inside so not so straight-forward. My first pg was also a fluke accident on the pill (hence the Mirena) So this will be the first time we've ever actually ttc!

I guess it depends on whether it is coil with or without hormones - I had a copper coil (ie non-hormonal) and got pg 'first attempt', both times! The midwife looked quite surprised when she was working out my dates and linking it to when I had the coil removed!

Hi kato! Thats exciting, when is ur appointment? I just called my doctor and she said she would do it but there was a 2 weeks wait so 9 days to go and it will be out. Eek.
And yea snap, weird actually being able to do the planning bit isnt it! Weird and exciting the thought of seeing a positive pregnancy test and not being panic stricken! Ha. I was in the middle of university when i fell pregnant with my DS1 so kinda a bit inconvenient to say the least however i got my degree and now am so much more proud of it.

Hi lebasi, i think i have the mirena coil - kinda feel a bit stupid at rhe fact im unsure which coil i have, i think after 2 'accidents' i was kinda like just give me something, anything as i clearly cannot remember to take my pill well enough! Thats positive tho that u fell pregnant straight away, i havent had a period for over 2 years now tho so im worried that will mean it will take a while to get back to normal even tho the doctor said i can fall pregnant straight away..

I'm just waiting for my letter!

I was 20 weeks when we found out DS was harvesting! My coil has been in for almost 4 years now, and I've had no period whatsoever, but as soon I got back from the GP I had cramping and brown spotting!

I'm going to assume it will take a few months, and this is what I've told DH, so he doesn't feel under too much 'pressure'!

I too have an appointment to get my coil removed - two weeks today!

This will be our first time ttc so I'm hoping it's not too long a wait! I have the copper coil in. I currently have regular cycles but not sure whether the removal of the coil will still affect this??

Oh sorry kato, i presumed u hadnt yet had it taken out from what u said? Have u had it out yet or is the brown spotting just a random af?

How did u manage to get to 20 weeks without knowing? I wish i could have! The 36 week wait by the time i found out at 4/5 weeks was agonising! Yea iv told DH it will take a few months for my body to get back to normal as hes already scared about things being wrong with him meaning he cant have kids! - i have a slight hypochondriac on my hands btw ha. Iv assured him everything will be fine and im secretly wishing i could be pregnant within the first month so i could tell him at xmas our news but really not expecting that at all.

What do u mean btw kato when u say threads have flipped - is that common? Im so worried they wont be able to get hold of the strings when trying to get mine out..

I know - I was extremely lucky (especially having many friends who have found it much harder to get pg). I think having a very regular cycle and not having used hormonal contraception probably helped, as I didn't have to wait for the affect of any hormones to work their way out of my system. I hope you are all similarly lucky!

Hi Mrs2909 I actually requested an early December appointment when I rang last week. I wanted to get it out just before my period is due so had worked out to get it done then. The only reason I want it then is to see if my period comes as usual and I don't have to wait long to see! Hehe - a crap waiter too!!

That said I wanted a coil check a couple of months back as my period was a week late and I couldn't feel the strings. My GP surgery doesn't have anyone that deals with coils so I had to go to the family planning clinic and their wait was 2-3 weeks! In that time period came and strings there again so didn't bother.

No, it's still in there, the spotting was just a random creepy thing! - Hoping letter arrives soon!

I went for it to be checked after it had been in a year and the GP couldn't find strings, so I was booked in for an ultrasound which confirmed it was still there but the strings had went up too, so always knew when removal time came I'd need a specialist service, and could involve waiting times.

I had it fitted a few weeks after an ELCS so my cervix had never actually opened, so was a sore job going in!

I've still no idea how I went so long without knowing, I was just dog tired all the time and was so crap at taking the pill (well duh!) I didn't have a regular cycle as such.

Came to the crunch when we went to the Edinburgh Festival and I just couldn't drink and felt really sick. Did a test to rule it out at work and lo and behold, the digital stick said 3+ weeks pg!

Turns out that's the maximum they go up to, and a scan confirmed I was at least 20weeks!

He was constantly breach, and 'well tucked in there' which explains a little.

I had a Mirena Coil and it wasn't a straight forward removal due to my threads having been drawn up into the womb and being tangled around the device. However, the guy I was referred to for removal (after 2 GPs had failed) got it out with minimal discomfort Smile

I was pregnant 6 week later Smile

It came as a huge shock as we had been told it would probably take about 6 months as my endometrium wall would have to build itself up again to a thickness that would be able to facilitate an implantation Smile

When I got my positive result I was absolutely gob smacked, my husband's words were "Bloody hell!" He couldn't take it in.

Obviously we were over the moon but we'd anticipated having much longer to prepare for a pregnancy becoming a reality Grin

I had a copper coil, it came out really easily. My first AF appeared about 5-6 weeks later and my god it was awful Sad. Without doubt the worst period pains I have
ever had in my life - I ended up doubled over in A&E at work having never experienced pain like it. I was terrified I had an ectopic pregnancy as my period pains were never that severe. Eased by that evening fortunately with some heavy duty pain meds & was fine after. Still have no idea what was going on there!

A month after that I was fortunate enough to be pregnant Smile

However, the endometrium wall issue may not have been such a problem for me as I had light and regular periods the whole time I had my Mirena in place. Even though the Mirena isn't 'designed' to stop ovulation apparently it can happen in 25% of women and I think it is this group of women who may find it takes longer to conceive as their hormones/cycles need to regulate again etc.

Ooh Grumblelion positive it came out easily and that the following month you were pregant but not so good on the AF front! Did you have regular periods when the coil was in?

Sounds like it was a definite shock writer but again very quick once you had the coil removed

Writerwannabe thats the kind of encouragement i come on here for, i really would love to find out im pregnant at christmas but it seems such a slim chance however stories like urs make me feel slightly more positive!

I know, my DH said ( in one of his "please take ur coil out" speeches) that he doesnt want a present off me, just wrap up my coil in a box for him. Lol. Tmi maybe but the thought of telling him im pregnant on xmas day makes me well up. If not, im gonna just tell him my coil is out instead! - at least i have a back up plan!

The thought of a newborn is terrifying me though, my second baby had horrendous colic, screamed none stop from about 6:30pm (just as ds1 would be going to bed) until around 1am and that would happen at least 6 days a week until she was about 4 months old so im so scared that will happen again and it almost sent me over the edge. Everyone else i spoke to all had babies that slept thru 6+hrs a night from like 6 weeks old which was very frustrating. I think i deserve a baby that sleeps this time! Ha. Please god.

So your husband doesn't know you're having it removed? How exciting!

I'm not sure he'd want to see it afterwards though? Smile Saying that, I wanted to see mine but the Doctor threw it straight in the clinical waste bin Grin Poor little discarded coil....

I'm going to pretend I didn't read your second paragraph, I want to pretend that new motherhood will be a dream! I'm currently 21 weeks and I don't think I can face any alternative thoughts Smile

I definitely had much heavier periods with the coil but period pains were no different really with or without. I have always had an extremely irregular cycle anyway though I think things were a bit more regular with the coil in. It was very odd, just that one very painful AF and
I haven't had one since with pregnancy & breastfeeding so we'll see how things go!
