Hi everyone,

Im new on here and am booked in to have my coil removed next wed as me and my hubby plan to start ttc our first child together (i have 2 from a previous relationship and he has none).

I would love to hear from anyone who has had experience with coils - how long did it take for your first af after it was removed? How long did it take to get pregnant? Or are u trying now?

As my first 2 pregnancies happened by accident due to missing a pill a few times, in the back of my mind im thinking i should get pregnant pretty quickly but im tying my hardest to push this thought away as it could take months and months and u just dont know. Im just sp excited to get this thing out and start on our ttc journey together :-)

Hi everyone, I just had my coil out last Wednesday. It was a non- hormonal copper one.

Just something that I got told, that doesn't seem to have been mentioned yet. I was told I needed to be on my AF to have it removed. Luckily my cycles are pretty regular, so I booked my appointment with that in mind. AF started the previous Sunday.

I imagine with the Mirena one, this is probably a little different. But I was told, being on helps with the removal.

Anyhow...it's lovely to read some great BFP success storied after coil removal. Good luck everyone! Smile

Ooh, excited to find this thread! DP and I decided last weekend to start TTC #1, so I've got an appointment tomorrow to talk to the nurse about having my copper coil taken out Grin

I'm very very very excited, hopefully I won't have to wait too long to have it removed Smile and glad to see a few others also having coils taken out with the same intent! Hi everyone!

KatoPotato · 18/11/2013 19:31

Glad to have found you guys! The other ttc threads were all so big and established! X

MrsW2909 · 18/11/2013 20:42

No ive booked it in and hes spent every day since begging me to take it out like now but i just keep saying not until january, so either he will find out its out on xmas day (providing i can keep it quite that long!) or that im actually pregnant (which i doubt will happen). Either way hes gonna be chuffed.21 weeks, so just passed half way!
Have u found out what ur having?

Sorry, didnt realise we were on page 2 already, only read up to the end of page 1 before replying! Ha

Im pretty tempted to ask for the coil to wrap up for him (joke) im pretty sure the doctor would think i was slightly tapped if i did!hmm i will have to think of some other imaginative way of telling him...maybe a trying to conceive book or something?...

I think i have the mirena coil - anyone got this one or had this one? Did u have af's as mine completely stopped after the first or second month of having it in so im worrying this may mean it takes a while to get back to normal?

Welcome hippyjess, let me know how ur app goes and wen the big date is to get it removed :-)

We are having a little boy and so, so excited! He is kicking and wriggling away as I'm typing. He is due 7 days after what will be our first wedding anniversary so it will be really special Smile

MrsW2909 · 18/11/2013 20:58

Aww thats sweet, with any luck our baby could be due around our first wedding anniversary too :-) did u have a big wedding?

Well 60 guests in the day and another 50 in the evening - so not massive, but just right for us. We did splash out and have a lovely day though :) We actually got married less than 5 calendar months after we had gotten engaged as the venue we really liked had a cancellation and so we just thought, "Why not?!" So instead of saving for a Wedding we just did it, whacked it all on a credit card and pad for it afterwards, so a little bit backwards. It was lovely though because the cancellation date was actually my dad's birthday so it was really special for him.

In the space of 7 months I got proposed to, got married and got pregnant, haha. A very manic time!! Grin

HippyJess · 19/11/2013 09:37

About to head to my appointment, so it'll either be removed today or I'll know when in a few weeks! Eep! :)

Writerwannabe83 · 19/11/2013 09:41

Good luck Hippy and I hope you get it taken out today!! Because of complications with my strings I had to wait 13 weeks to have it removed after having first seen my GP about it - it was torture!!!

KatoPotato · 19/11/2013 10:10

Good Luck Hippy!

Still no letter! Hope I'm not 13 weeks like you writer! - I am also a string pest!

DS was born just after our wedding... We got married in secret on Christmas Eve 2009. Told everyone on Christmas Morning!

KatoPotato · 19/11/2013 10:11

I found out I was pregnant, started a new job, moved house, got married and had DS in the space of 3 months!

Writerwannabe83 · 19/11/2013 10:18

What a lovely wedding story, so romantic Smile

My strings were found to have disappeared when I had my check 6 weeks after insertion so had to go for an USS to check my Mirena was still in place which thankfully it was. They told me it would make it more difficult to remove but at the time I wasn't too fussed. When I saw my doctor 2.5 years later to have it removed she went in blind trying to locate it (due to having no strings to pull) but was unsuccessful. She referred me to another GP (who specialises in Coil removals) who I had to wait a week to see, but she'd couldn't get it either. She was prodding around inside me with what looked like a mascara brush (as the bristles are designed to hook onto stray strings) but she had no look either. I then had to be referred to a specialist clinic and the referral took 4 weeks and when I heard from the clinic their waiting list was 9 weeks Shock I was not a happy lady!!

It wasn't the most pleasant experience. I was scanned first so they could locate the coil and then it was removed whilst the scanner thing was still being pressed on my abdomen. My legs were hoiked up in stirrups too, how very dignified Smile It was quite uncomfortable and it hurt far more having it removed than it did having it inserted! The Consultant was there with his tray of surgical instruments and his nurse was wearing scrubs and it was all a little bit daunting but at least he got it out!!

I will be having another one put back in after the birth though - the experience wasn't enough to deter me from having another Smile

HippyJess · 19/11/2013 11:00

I have no idea whether my strings are locate-able or not as I have a normal-length vag (sorry) and mega-short fingers! Seriously, my hands are ridiculously tiny. Anyway, the nurse didn't check and didn't seem to think it would be a problem, but she doesn't do removals, so...

I have an appointment to have it removed, with the Dr who knows what she's doing, next Tuesday Grin so excited! This means our first attempt will be in the run up to christmas. Theoretically could be starting 2014 upduffed, though I won't get my hopes up on that one Wink

KatoPotato · 19/11/2013 11:14

Hooray! Excellent news Hippy!

I'm the same writer, strings were gone by my check up and I had an US to check all was well. I was told then that removal would have to be by a specialist.

I told the GP this a fortnight ago, so referral went straight to whoever that may be!

Where is my letter?!?!?

Writerwannabe83 · 19/11/2013 12:47

I waited a month and then rang the clinic myself to ask why I hadn't heard from them - they then gave me the photo over the phone. They explained they had only recently received my referral letter....it wasn't done as 'straight away' as my GP had led me to believe. If I was you I'd ring my GP surgery to check it has been done, the receptionist will be able to look at your records and tell you exactly when the referral was done and to where. You can then chase it up yourself if you are as impatient as I was Smile

Writerwannabe83 · 19/11/2013 12:47

I meant to say they gave me my appointment over the phone, they didn't give me a photo Smile

MrsW2909 · 19/11/2013 13:05

this may be tmi but i can just about feel the strings with my finger tip - should i be able to grab hold of them or is this ok? so worried there will be complications getting it out after reading peoples stories online about the strings going up - never even knew that was possible!

OP posts:
KatoPotato · 19/11/2013 13:08

I'm not sure MrsW! I ask DH if he'd ever 'felt' mine and he said no! - I can feel a tiny sharp 'thing' up there, but nothing stringy!

MrsW1131 · 19/11/2013 13:10

you had similar numbers to me Writer, we could only fit 60 in the day and then had about 30 extra to the evening. even now looking back i think that was too many. Its so hard trying to spread your time over so many close friends and family whilst also trying to speak with your new husband! we also seen a late booking offer at the venue we wanted to we booked in feb for our september wedding....and now i also have huge credit card bills to pay off!

Writerwannabe83 · 19/11/2013 13:13

I know of women who have pulled their own coils out at home if they can access their strings. They all said it was easy enough but I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to give it a go Smile

MrsW1131 · 19/11/2013 13:14

my DH could feel them a lot in the beginning but now theyv gone up a little however if i really try i can just about feel the end of them - which does just feel like a tiny sharp thing and if i move it around a little i can tell its a string.. is that what you can feel Kato and theyr refereing you elsewhere to get it out?! i was hoping thats enough for them to get hold of them!

KatoPotato · 19/11/2013 13:25

MrsW I shall have another forage on your behalf next time I pop to the loo, my we're getting close!

I'm sure it's not stringy at all, and at my last smear the nurse had another check incase it had dislodged anything but she said no, nothing.

MrsW1131 · 19/11/2013 13:33

lol, thanks Kato! let me know how it goes!

Im really scaring myself now reading all these stories about the strings dissapearing - my worst nightmare is having to be refered to get it out. are you worried about it?

if i wiggle my finger around the sharp bit enough it sort of comes out a little and i can move it but i wouldnt be able to get my fingers onto it to pull it out - it seems a lot of women in america get them out theirselfs due to the fact they have to pay for it to be done over there. i would be too scared to try i think!
