Sperm meets egg meets CBFM?

Idratherbe · 05/08/2012 21:16

Does anyone know how the sperm meet egg plan works alongside the clearblue fertility monitor? I'm hoping to shock my poor body into actually conceiving this month by combining hardcore science with good old fashioned well timed shagging.

So, if I'm supposed to bonk on the 3 days following a positive OPK, in CBFM world does that mean the 3 days following first peak reading? Or the 3 days following first high reading? I'd assume the former because the CBFM predicts LH surge but I'd be grateful for any advice and success stories using SMEP.

After having tried any which way to get pregnant for the last 6 months sans success, I WILL get pregnant this month. By hook or by crook!

I thought on the CBFM you just do it on every day you get either high or peak?

You know, though, that the medically-recommended way to get pregnant is to throw away the OPKs and dtd every other day without fail from the last day of AF until AF starts again...you need stamina but it's the most successful method to use.

toffeesam · 05/08/2012 21:36

Docs told me that too. Just flood yourself with the little swimmers so there are always some there. Like a welcome party for the egg. Staminar is needed, but it is a lot of fun. Think of it as an extra olympic endurance event! ;-)

Idratherbe · 05/08/2012 21:45

Awesome, I'm going to continue to swamp my egg with sperm then! We've been doing it pretty much every day or so since starting to try and happily its not wearing thin, just a bit of a shame that sticking to the medically recommended plan isn't yet working for us.

Crazy really, we have one DS who was conceived after 4 months and I fell pregnant immediately with the last one that ended in MC. We're both under 35 and seemingly shouldn't have any probs but it's getting me a bit down that I should have the double shittiness of miscarrying and the failing to conceive by what would have been my due date. However i'm fantastically lucky to have conceived at all so far and even luckier to have carried my little one to term so it's certainly not that bad.

Thanks for the advice Smile

... welcome party for the egg... Chuckle

Glad i made you laugh. I made the doc laugh when he asked what method i was using, i said "a bit gung hoo". I think i blushed when i realised what i said.

Sorry to hear about your mc. I'm still ttc my first.

P.S balloons and banners are optional ;-)

Idratherbe · 05/08/2012 22:43

Love your doctor! Struggling with the concept of balloons and banners at this particular party venue...

For SMEP and CBFM I'd go for every other day on high reading. Every day from first peak for 3 days. Then miss a day and go for one more try.

Idratherbe · 06/08/2012 20:37

Thanks Winkle, I thought that might be the answer. Can't quite decide whether or not to start peeing on sticks, did it one month with no success and a slightly peeved husband.

Hope you don't mind me chucking my tuppence worth in? I've been using cbfm for a while and to be honest I would support the every other day method. op it sounds like you've got good fertility etc and you have proof you and dh are compatible so it it probably just a question of time.

We conceived ds month one of ttc and have been ttc #2 for a yr now. I did fall but had an ectopic so now ttc again. The month we did conceive on cbfm we'd dtd eod through the highs and only on the first peak.

Flooding the egg with sperm sounds like a great plan though!

Good luck :)

Idratherbe · 06/08/2012 21:34

Crikey, I'm sorry to hear about your ectopic Berries. I don't know if you feel the same - I'm very conscious of being lucky to have my DS but it still feels so very unfair to lose no 2 and struggle for no 3, especially as I see the increasing gap in age between DS and his fictional future sibling (currently 3 years).

Sorry Toffee - I know you're still TTC no 1 so this chat about struggling for no 2 must be a bit galling. My apologies.

Anyway, enough of my wallowing, I've got an egg to catch so bring on the PMA to spur on my sullen ovaries.

Yes id rather - it is hard. Everyone is always asking when ds is getting a sibling, everyone I had ds with has their dc2 now. Ive stopped comparing! I do think the pain of losing a baby is tempered by the gratefulness for the one I already have. And I feel so much more grateful for him than possible. Struggling to conceive any baby is hard but I definitely understand the issues around wanting to provide a sibling. Xx

winkle2 · 06/08/2012 21:41

Berries did you dtd after the first peak? As this month I dtd eod then on both peaks and today is the high after the peak bit I've had a row with hubby!

iloveberries · 06/08/2012 21:46

Haha! I think youve done plenty!

It also depends if you know when you ov. I reckon I ov on the day of my first peak anyway.

Get yourself an early night (but kiss an make up first!)

After a year using it I got really hacked off with CBFM. And it just didn't work for me after mc. The months I got pg were months I didn't use it. One ended in mc. After the mc I started temperature charting, and stopped using the CBFM after a couple of cycles. after that our "formula" was dtd every 2-3 days from end of AF til I got a positive OPK. Then daily until my chart confirmed ovulation (so until 3 mornings after ovulation). Then only if we fancied it after that. In practice that meant usually only about 8 or 9 baby focused shags, so not that hard work. Was pg the 2nd cycle after ditching CBFM, 4 after mc. The thing is that CBFM is just a very expensive OPK. It does not guarantee or confirm that you actually ovulated, so you can give up too soon. For me temp charting was the key.

iloveberries · 06/08/2012 22:20

Interesting post bonzo. I'm starting to wonder if I should temp instead. Can you recommend a good thermometer?

My dh can only manage eod so no smep for me but eod should be good eventually - just gotta catch that egg!

bonzo77 · 06/08/2012 22:39

I got a thermometer off amazon from a company called baby mad. About £3ish. Search for "BBT thermometer". You need digital and to 2 decimal places as the post ovulation rise can be as little as 0.2 degree Celsius. There's a website called fertility friend which tells you everything you need to know and has software to decide your data. really recommend it.

iloveberries · 07/08/2012 06:50

Thanks bonzo

winkle2 · 07/08/2012 16:53

i love berries: we didnt dtd last month. we're back on low but will carry on dtd just in case. currently on cd17 and have so far dtd cd9, 12, 14, 15 and tonight will be 17

winkle2 · 07/08/2012 16:53

i mean last night!

winkle2 · 07/08/2012 17:02

bonzo - thanks for sharing your story. so annoying that you have spent so much on it and it didnt work!

I'm going for your method of dtd every 2-3 days this cycle and we dtd on both peaks which was last sat & sun but we're going to carry on.

Last month I got a peak on monitor on CD13 which is very early for me as I usually get a smiley on the sticks around CD16-18. Then AF didnt arrived till CD43!! So annoyed cause we'd obvs stopped dtd by then!

iloveberries · 07/08/2012 17:12

I'vejust bought the tcoyf book which everyone on here raves about so hoping that will help me too....

Good luck winkle x

winkle2 · 07/08/2012 19:12

Feel free to share any tips from the book Grin

iloveberries · 07/08/2012 19:27

It's fucking massive!! Literally like a biology text book!! Hoping it'll have the magic ingredient of how to conceive with one tube but doubtful so I'll probably just carry on bonking every other day till I get a sticky bfp in the right place!

Idratherbe · 07/08/2012 21:12

Ooh yes, please can we have a TCOYF tip of the day every day?!

You know it strikes me (rather late in the day) that with an average 20% chance of conceiving in any cycle and that's despite any other difficulties, the odds are truly stacked against us. It's just pure chance and so I suppose one option is just to shag like crazy until the fat lady sings. All this other stuff is just there to give the illusion of control dammit.

However I am truly fascinated Grin and so I'm still trying to decide whether or not to tell the CBFM what day I'm on. I suppose that stems from paranoia that I'm not ovulating following MC, but I honestly think I am. I may go back to temping too, just to make the 2WW more interesting if nothing else!

PS - has anyone else had the weird thought that somehow you're inadvertently using some forgotten about form of contraception?!
