Trying to conceive thread Number 2

Hi Girls,

I thought I'd start a new thread the old one was getting a bit long.

I am feeling a lot more relaxed this month. We have been BD'ing but more for the fun of it than for babymaking. DH (bless him) has bought me a separate present for each the 12 days of Xmas - one a day. He has bought me some lovely things - which are very useful in "getting us in the mood"...

I am such a lucky girl!

Here's hoping Santa is kind to us all...

congratulations!

M2T · 16/01/2004 11:07

Oh YES! Congratulations Steppemum!
I felt guilty too about concieving so quickly.... I'm sure everyone will be very happy for you!

As for the certainty of the test.... whether is 50p of £50... the only thing that makes that line appear is the presence of the HCG hormone.

Quackers · 16/01/2004 12:02

CONGRATULATIONS!!

dejags · 16/01/2004 12:36

Congratulations Steppemum! Enjoy the next 9 months.

bluestar · 16/01/2004 21:24

Congratulations, enjoy the next 8 months!

steppemum · 17/01/2004 02:40

Thanks every one, it's just starting to seem real, we've still got guests staying, so when they were out yesterday, dh and I got out all the books to work out due dates, and when we'd need to go back to the uk etc, so I'm beginning to believe it.

ermentrude · 18/01/2004 19:55

Can I join you on this thread? I am new to ttc so please bear with me. When we had ds, we were not really 'officially' trying were of the mind that we wold like it to happen but were in no rush. It took nearly two years. At the time, we were quite relaxed about getting pregnant. Now that we want a second baby, it is not happening very quickly again.
My cycles are longer than average (usually about 5-6 weeks). We have not been using any contraception for 4 months and have been trying at the right time of the month (I think).
Four months isn't long is it really? I know that many of you have been trying for a very long time.
Apart from the obvious (!),what should we be doing to try to conceive?
Thanks in advance

bunny2 · 18/01/2004 20:54

Hi Ermentrude, welcome. I usually have long cycles and have difficulty pinpointing if/when I ovulate. This month I am trying temping for the first time so I'll let you know how I get on. I dont know if you are familiar with temping, basically you take your temperature every morning as soon as you wake up and mark it on a chart, when you ovulate temp should show a marked rise (mine hasnt yet!). It is useful for checking that you are actually ovulating. Good luck.

How's eveyone else? I have been in a vile mood for days so surely af is on its way, then I can start on clomid again.

ermentrude · 18/01/2004 21:08

Hi there bunny2.
Sorry for being very naive - as i said, i am new to this - but you take your temperature as you would do normally - no strange contraption for doing it in funny places?
Sorry to sound odd - I really have no idea at the moment!

Quackers · 19/01/2004 08:54

Hiya! Yes you need a BBT thermometer (Boots do them) and that comes will full instructions how to do it. Oh it's orally BTW!!!! It's great to see when you're ov'g!

BigBird · 19/01/2004 12:01

welcome ermentrude, as Quackers and bunny say - get yourself off to boots and buy the basal body thermometer and book to mark your temps in and get temping. This should show an increase in temps once ovulation has happened. After a few mths you should see a pattern. You can also buy ovulation predictor kits (opks) but they are expensive and you would prob have to use a lot of them with a long cycle.

Go to the fertility friend website (fertilityfriend.co.uk) and click on Handbook and downlaod it...its just a 10 page guide to conception and will explain temping in more detail and also give you some clue about tracking mucus.

good luck !

bunny2 · 19/01/2004 17:15

Still no af. I want to start my clomid BTW do you all know even ONE measly cup of coffee can affect your fertility.

gingernut · 19/01/2004 17:57

You're definitely right there, bunny. I had to really cut down on coffee to get pregnant. Worth it in the end though

ermentrude · 19/01/2004 18:16

What about coca-cola? Should I be avoiding it?

fisil · 19/01/2004 18:34

I'm not drinking coffee at all, and I'm still not getting pg (or have I missed something in my logic here?) Does dp have to cut back too?

Moomin · 19/01/2004 18:42

Haven't drunk caff coffee since last pg (3 years) apart from the very very occasional one and can't say I miss it. The advice was that blokes should stay off it as well up until recently - and then they said one cup a day could help sperm mobility!! Dh doesn't want to start drinking it again now - he's given it up as well and hasn't had a migraine since so he's not very keen at all!

When we were ttc dd1 dh was also under strict instructions to stay out of the bath, which he dutifully did and we only took 3 months to conceive. He's just given up smoking after 20 years of it (hurrah for dh!) so we hope this will help as well.

bunny2 · 19/01/2004 19:19

Apparently drinking any caffiene can affect your fertility so coke's out, and tea as well as coffee, chocolate too. Oh, and while I am at it, absolutely no alcohol should be allowed if you have any fertility problems, that goes for him too (sperm count and motility can descrease as caffiene intake increases. There's bugger all left to do except shag!

ermentrude · 19/01/2004 19:23

No WONDER I am not pregnant! I drink gallons of the stuff!

Don't know if it was a coincedence, but when we got pregnant the first time round, DH had just started taking mega powerful vitamin c tablets after I read about them somewhere.

Anyone know if this is a fluke or meant to help?

bunny2 · 19/01/2004 19:33

Ermentrude, I am reading a book right now (embarrassed to plug it yet again on MN) about natural solutions to improve fertility. I can give you some of the key points if you are interested. It is written by a nutritionalist who recommends a 4-month pre-conceptual plan which loosely means:

no booze/caffeine/tobacco/saturated fats/gm foods/refined sugar

eat organic where possible

supplement your diet with lots of different vitamins and minerals. Basically start with a good pre-natal supplement (for dp too) and then add extras that might be appropriate to you. for instance, I think I have a blood disorder which is causing my micarriages so she recommends extra Vit E for this. For low sperm count zinc and selenium are important and so on.

It does make sense, the body is much more efficient when free of toxins and in optimum health but I dont know how realistic her plan is (yes, I can avoid tobacco and cut right down on booze but cant afford everything organic). Anyway, the book does have some useful pointers so pls ask me more if you are interested.

bunny2 · 19/01/2004 19:34

yes, vit C is very good for sperm

valleygirl · 19/01/2004 19:39

i noticed that this thread was a lot more active than the one i started this afternoon about conception and my dp who has low sperm count - it's kind of exciting starting the whole process of trying to conceive first baby, but also a little worrying as my dp has low sperm count (18 million) and also low mobility - those suckers need all the help they can get!
he won't be happy being told to cut out the coffee!!
how long should we try before getting worried about lack of success? anyone else had a success story with a partner who's sperm need armbands and seem to be swimming backwards?!!!!
