Ah brilliant!!! I remember eyeing it enviously at my SIL's. :D
Ah that's good to know. I've read a fair bit and something stupid like only 28% of diabetics fall pregnant with their levels under 7%. The majority of forums are plastered with women being terrified because their levels are 8.2% or 8.5% and yes, that does mean they have VERY bad control of their diabetes, but they have all gone on to have healthy babies.
The trouble with it is that in the first trimester - like, in the 4 - 12 weeks after conception, that's when the baby's organs start to form. That's when spinal bifida can hit - so you can congenital defects such as physical deformities etc. That's why we take 400mg of folic acid. As a diabetic, I take 5000mg of folic acid - it's the prescribed one and like - 11 times more than the average woman needs. I also take a Pregnacare to make sure I get the other vitamins in so am getting 5400mg of folic acid a day.
That said, instead of reading on forums, I've gone in and read the medical reports and where the hospitals all say you HAVE to be under 7%, they don't tell you that being under 5% is just as unhealthy and just as dangerous to the unborn but they fail to mention that congenital defects actually only typically increase when your hba1c is over 9% in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
So under 8.5% is actually still safe. But I guess by saying under 7% means that they give people a buffer. Terrify people into 7% and they will get as close as they can. Some hospitals say under 6% and that's even worse - based on the research, you have just as much chance of congenital defects if the levels drop too low.
I trust my body. It's not let me down yet. :)
But YAY for you!!! Are you at work today?
