IVF/ICSI/FET - any more for any more?

jumpingjackhash · 05/01/2012 10:05

Hi all, we're about to start FET following an unsuccessful round of ICSI last year (well, we got the bfp, but then I miscarried shortly after Sad). But... time to get back on the bike and go again...

Anyone else going through this?

Best of luck Zeebee!

Yes, Raspberry my clinic does not count a failed FET as part of the cumulative count for IVF. So I've had two failed fresh cycles and one failed FET. They count that as two failed cycles.

There was a study done some time ago which found that of women starting IVF treatment around 30% were pregnant after 1 cycle, 60% after 2, 70% after 3 and 75% after four. That's why NICE recommended 3 cycles should be funded on the NHS. And remember, those are pregnancy rates, not live birth rates. And one of the biggest predictors of success is having had a past successful IVF pregnancy. A lot of this is simply a matter of luck!

duggs1976 · 10/04/2012 13:08

josie i do hear you and I am also a firm believer in making realistic decisions. It isn't just financial burden but the emotional and physical is so tough i found. I need to research adoption as I have no idea where to start so I might start looking into that and maybe PM a few questions josie? They do say sometimes after people have accepted the adoption route things can happen naturally anyway but it really is a case of making tough decisions. Where do u start with adoption? Is it a really expensive horrible process ? No idea Sad

JosieSmith1 · 10/04/2012 14:58

Certainly PM me if you want Duggs. I'm no expert on adoption but I did look into it recently, just in case. I only really know about the Newcastle area though. You can find a lot of info on the internet. I think lots of places run open nights and information days so prospective adoptive parents can speak to people who have adopted and find out what it reall entails, and what the services in your area are like, I think something like thst could be really helpful once you're serious about adoption.

Raspberryjam · 10/04/2012 15:17

Sorry you are feeling so rubbish Josie and it is horrible when it spills over into arguments. I liked what you did with planting the azalea in the garden.
I remember a friend who has 3 children through ivf telling me once - (she was far down the adoption route at first- long story) - she had decided she was goingto be a mum no matter by which route and once she accepted that, the journey was easier. I think the adoption route can be very tough sometimes - although as I say I know of a few people who have come through it . Josie it is hard to have to wait til test daywhen you feel it hasn't worked - I think that some breathing space is a good idea for anyone before the next move as like you say it just makes you feel all over the place emotionally - and it is really difficult to make rational decisions when you feel like that.Maybe there is some other protocol they might try? I know I sure as hell can't make decisions right now. Look after yourself xxx

thanks Knackered for those stats - it is hard to keep positive once it has failed more than once.
I don't know too much duggs re adoption route? I totally get what you say about the financial, emotional and physical toll of trying again given what happenend before- but this is a new route altogether that you are trying from what you said and the first time for that new route........................

Wonder how you are doing Angel?

AngelFairy · 10/04/2012 15:37

Hello lovelies...
Thank you all for your kind wishes. I shall update you in a second on me...

I just want to express my sympathy to Raspberry. I know you already have your DD and what sounds like an amazing DH, but that doesn't mean you don't deserve a success story again. You're an inspiration with that much determination and optimism. Huge hugs x

Josie and Duggs you are helping me understand the next step, but don't lose faith just yet. You're still very much in the race, as just mentioned by you both, the frustrating thing is that all the Progesterone symptoms are the same for pregnancy (as it's this thats sustains it) so think positive and we'll keep sending you ((lots of baby dust))

AFM...
I had my EC this morning. So I am lay on the sofa watching my guilty pleasure (whispers: Jeremy Kyle) Blush
I am please to say that, unlike Knackered my sedation was very good. I think it helped that I was feeling very tired, but as soon as I lay down I was out. I didn't even manage to press play on my ipod!
They collected 10 eggs and left some behind, as apparently the embryologist and surgeon decided that the quality was good enough - Has anyone heard of this before? I thought more was better?
Anyway, we are expecting a call tomorrow morning to see how our little cherubs are doing x

Hello to everyone else x

KnackeredCow · 10/04/2012 16:29

Hi Angel. Yep they are completely right, not every follicle contains a mature egg and so there's debate over how small a follicle the clinician should go for. On my first IVF cycle, the doctor used a double lumen catheter so he could also flush. This means it's harder to get the smaller eggs. He got 12 and all were mature. He didn't attempt to go for the smaller follicles. 11 fertilised normally. On my second attempt they got 16 eggs - different doctor using smaller single lumen catheter. Only 11 were mature. The smaller catheter made it possible to collect more eggs including those that weren't ripe!

10 is a really good number so big congrats to you! Grin My clinic begins to worry if there's much more than about 12 because of the risk of OHSS. I was borderline for it on my second attempt and felt quite rough after EC.

Glad you got lots of sedation. Think I'm going to ask for more next time! Don't really find the gas and air particularly effective!

zeebee1 · 10/04/2012 17:21

Hi All

Well i'm back from FET... I now have 2 on board - both IVF ones (as opposed to the 2 ICSI ones we still have on ice) one of the embryos was apparently multiplying very fast this morning after being thawed and the other one was a bit slower, but they have put both back in anyway... Smile

So test date for me is Sat April 21st - gulp Shock. I must say the transfer was a little bit more uncomfortable than i'd remembered first time around - poor DH - i'd practically made his hand draw blood by squeezing it so much... wimp that I am! Afterwards we went up to North London to have an hour of accupuncture which was v relaxing, and now come home and just done Zita POst transfer CD - so i'm practically in a coma now Wink

angel congrats with the EC this morning - glad it went well - 10 is a great crop - I'll see your guilty pleasure and raise it with - "Keeping up the the Kardashians" Blush about to settle in front of that with a Brew...

rasperberry I am so sorry about your AF news - hope you do find some useful info on adoption if you do decide to go down that route - I work with a woman who had unsuccessful IVF in the past and has now adopted 2 lovely girls - who were sisters and aged 2 and 3 yrs when she adopted - they are now teenagers and she loves them to bits - she has told me the journey to getting them wasn't that easy, but I think defiantely all worth it in the end...

duggs & josie hope the TWW is OK today... 2nd week always worse isn't it?! MASSIVE fingers crossed for you both...

knackerd thank you for your good wishes sent my way this morning. Hope you are doing OK too?

Hi to everyone else out there
Zx

Raspberryjam · 10/04/2012 18:06

Well done Angel - 10 is fantastic. Hope you have still got your team rosette pinned on and thanks for your message -( wonders when will apply for own rosette and pin it on) - here's hoping they are getting busy now......!

Great news Zeebee and sounds great that one was growing so well - long may it continue!!!

CareBear1 · 10/04/2012 19:41

Well done Angel and ZB great news. Fingers crossed for you both.

Raspberry sending you massive hugs, its so hard isn't it and yet your DD is proof that it can work. Hope you find some inspiration of what is the right move for you next. Maybe in a month or so's time you will have recovered a little bit and think differently about another round?

Josie hang on in there, not long now.

Milly do send us an update, how are you getting on, are you still in hospital?

Waves everyone else. AFM am back to charting and got a peak today at CD13 on my CBFM so looks like my cycle's gone straight back to more or less normal which I'm relieved about, and we're back to SWI (hmm, pointless Hmm?) still fun though Wink. Just counting down until we go to see Mr S at Epsom and Downs in a couple of weeks, though now wondering whether we should have gone to see Dr Gorgy in london as heard good reports about him now. If all these tests come back as normal, and we do another 2 rounds of IVF with same outcome think i will be ready to throw in the towel too.

sorry Jumping.....forgot about team motto for a minute........LETS DO THIS!!!!!!

Raspberryjam · 10/04/2012 22:52

Thanks Care for your kind message (takes sharp intake of breath when Care momentarily drops her team rosette on floor - breaths sigh of relief when Care quickly pins back on and stands up straight.............................then reaches back into bag of giant chocolate buttons...............)

Isismyturnyet · 10/04/2012 23:34

knackered this is my first frozen cycle after my first fresh one, they told me it takes an average of 3 but i had hopes that i would be the exception :)
I have patients but its hard to stay positive when i have dealt with so much failure

duggs I felt the same way on progesterone, it was sooo much fun (sarcasm) but at least i know it was working!!! Ive heard the symptoms double when your preggers, i thought my boobies were gonna have to be taped down they were like my own personal flotation devices Blush

zee thats great news, i will send all my baby dust your way since i am not using it for another couple weeks!!!!

duggs1976 · 11/04/2012 07:29

Ahh .. 12dpo did a sneaky first response and got a very faint BFP!!! I know is so early but right now am smiling.Grin did another and still a second line. V faint. In shock.

zeebee1 · 11/04/2012 08:29

duggs GrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrin fab news - congrats on your early BFP!!

JosieSmith1 · 11/04/2012 10:05

Angel fab news that you?ve got 10 eggs collected, sending fertilising thoughts your way (oh that sounds wrong! Grin)

Zee great to having two embies on board, sending sticky thoughts your way

Good luck on your 2wws

Duggs that?s fantastic news!!

I?m on progesterone but haven?t got any symptoms, maybe it?s not working Hmm

Hi to everyone I?ve missed. Still waiting patiently here...

AngelFairy · 11/04/2012 10:41

BEWARE.... This is a 'ME' post!

The embryologist called to tell me that 8/10 were injected through ICSI, but that only 1 fertilised. I am absolutely devastated Sad
Eggs and sperm were all fine (after prep sperm wasn't count wasn't high enough for IVF). The ICSI practitioner didn't report anything abnormal. They were expecting higher numbers today and cannot explain why there has been such a huge drop.
Now they want to perform the transfer tomorrow, as there is no need to wait, and there is a 5% chance my only cherub won't last the night Sad But there is 95% chance it will.
I know that there is still 1 in the running and that it could be worse, but omg, I'm gutted.

What could have gone wrong?

AngelFairy · 11/04/2012 11:14

DUGGS Grin Grin Grin That's amazing!!
I'm doing a little (seated) dance for you - How exciting!!

JosieSmith1 · 11/04/2012 11:16

Oh Angel I'm so sorry to hear that. I know it won't be much comfort, but it does only take one. Are you with your DH? I hope you are looking after yourself. Sometimes we can't explain why things happen, I'm just very sorry. Fingers crossed for your embryo to last the night, it has a high chance of surviving

zeebee1 · 11/04/2012 12:01

angel so sorry that the numbers dropped - i can only echo what josie says - it only takes 1... Sending so many positive vibes to mini angel embryo...
X

Raspberryjam · 11/04/2012 18:50

Duggs - so very excited for you (shhhhhhhhh!) - but looking very good!!!!!!!

Angel - so sorry that it hasn't gone the way you expected at this stage - BUT hopefully your one is a good one - so still in with a chance Don't give up having got this far!!!!!We are not going to let you!!!!!..........Agree with Josie (and just checking to see if your team rosette is still nicely pinned on??????)

AngelFairy · 11/04/2012 21:02

Thanks everyone x

I have been doing my research and have come across this journal which has brightened my outlook for tomorrow.
The website is very useful for all things reproduction... If you're interested.

bugsylugs · 11/04/2012 21:53

Duggs excellent so very exciting
Angel remember it only takes one. Fingers crossed all is for good for tomorrow
Waves to all others

CareBear1 · 11/04/2012 22:18

wow talk about the highs and the lows on this thread.

Duggs that is such great news, well done you! Very happy for you hope everything goes smoothly from now on.

Angel what a disappointment, but so true what the others said. Every month we're only normally supposed to produce 1 and it doesn't seem like a small number then, this IVF business is such a head f**k. Hang in there and fingers crossed for the transfer.

Waves everyone else. x

JosieSmith1 · 12/04/2012 08:17

My clinic just told me their waiting time for donor eggs is 'a considerable length of time' Confused Great! I think I'm dropping my rosette! I'm off work after today until Tuesday so by the end of it I plan to have pinned it back on Grin

PP44 · 12/04/2012 09:59

Hello all, I've just joined and wondered if anyone had any advice for me? Im considering IVF after a miscarriage in Oct but wondering how do you choose the clinic? I'm 44 so time is running out and I know some clinics won't even accept me at my age!!

CareBear1 · 12/04/2012 10:20

Have passed lots of blood today - two very big rubbery clots (golf ball sized), even though CBFM said I ov'd yesterday. Phoned the clinic and they said its just left over lining from last cycle. Its freaked me out tbh
