Congrats nurse thank you for letting us know, it all seems to have happened so fast! So glad you are enjoying being a second time mum and you have your complete family now.

wombat thanks for the b/f tips. I def want to give it a go but it makes me nervous when people mention cracked or bleeding nipples! Sounds so painful.

How you doing today kool let us know how you get on.

My hypnobirthing class was interesting. Shame it was so flippin' hot! But it basically seems all about relaxing more, listening to hypno cd, practicising breathing and visualization and not watching the news before bed! I listened to the cd last night in bed and dropped off very well. I am liking my pillow but keep getting bad upper back ache so have to move onto my back. Not sure what to do about that, maybe need to find some regular exercises or stretches to do or something. I can't believe it is Monday, feel v tired and the week has barely started.

Sparklywine · 03/10/2011 08:40

Mentalling and feeling a bit teary, Monts has barely stopped kicking since yesterday afternoon, and I read that increased movements can indicate distress. Keep imagining him in there twizzling round the cord or something. Am going to try and get a midwife appointment for later today. Difficult, sorry to unburden but helps to type it and focus. Will keep you posted xxx

Sparklywine · 03/10/2011 09:18

Midwife at 2.20pm. He's still flipping away in there. MN research seems to suggest that increased movement can be normal a few weeks either side of 30 weeks, as they're getting big but still have some room in there for their acrobatics. Better safe than sorry though. Feel better for being proactive, may attempt sugary tea. I think I'm just a bit sleep deprived so not thinking too rationally. Wombat, I'm due 14th December, but the 18th will do me Grin Kool, sending hugs. This malarky isn't easy, is it!
Thanks lovelies x

yellowtomato · 03/10/2011 10:39

Hey sparkly sorry you're feeling teary, sounds like you are doing the right thing with a reassuring midwife appt. I didn't know that increased movement meant anything. Let us know how you get on.

On a random topic, anyone else getting mouth ulcers? So annoying, I think it means an immune system problem cos I used to get loads when I had glandular fever. I'm sure some kind of supplement would help, am already taking multiple vitamin. Any ideas?

koolforcats · 03/10/2011 14:49

Huge congrats nurse what happy news, wow the first thread baby! Can I order a labour like that please?!

I have happier news than the other day, I had a private scan, the nuchal fold measurement was the same but combined with the bloods which were better (?!) my combined result went from 1:250 to 1:4000!! So I'll take that! I feel much better about it all now and of course it's always a treat to see a little waving baby Smile. Thanks again for all of your lovely encouragement, I'm gonna try my hardest to chill out now and be a shiny happy person!

Wormshuffler · 04/10/2011 06:54

Hi sparkly how did it go?

Great news on the better nuchal fold result kool and good luck being a shiny happy person!

No yellow mouth ulcers is one thing I havn't had yet with this PG (thankfully) I havnt taken any vitamins for a couple of months, I couldnt get them down without throwing up! I have a box of pregnacare to get through though and should probably take then now that the sickness has gone. I always used to find that if I took vitamins regulary and then stopped I would be guaranteed to get mouth ulcers! Pregnacare didnt even exist when I had the DC's.

Today is the first day I have woken up without a sore pelvis Grin and I actually feel totally well!! positively blooming!! everyone keeps commenting on how big I am though.

Happy Tuesday ladies :)

yellowtomato · 04/10/2011 08:42

kool great news, glad you feel better

worm do you know if you did anything different to not have pain today. Blooming sounds excellent. People keep telling me I am big too, someone said I am the same size they were at 8 months and I am only 23 weeks. I find it a bit rude tbh, but not really sure how to respond.

Where is Emma? And sparkly how you feeling, what news?

Sparklywine · 04/10/2011 11:33

All went well, we went to the hospital in the end and they hooked me up to a monitor to listen to Monts for 40 minutes or so, his heartbeat was nice and steady, peaking slightly whenever he kicked - which was frequently! Lost count of the number of professionals telling me 'an active baby is a healthy baby!', so was worrying unecessarily as it turns out - plus ca change! Lovely to hear him for longer than the usual 20 seconds though, felt like he was in the room with us. DH was sharing titbits from a book I've purchased, 'Raising Boys', bless him.
At work so got to go and drink tea, great news Kool, a relief.
Yellow, people either say to me 'Ooh, what a neat little bump!' or look aghast and exclaim 'Where the hell did that come from!' like I'm carrying a baby elephant, so you can't win, and it is quite rude (though not as rude as people reaching out and actually rubbing you! Why not cop a feel of the old cervix whilst you're at it!?)
No mouth ulcers here but have never had one, probably one of those things one is prone to or not. I have my own afflictions!

Sparklywine · 04/10/2011 11:35

Oh, I had my first decent, dream-free night's sleep last night and it coincided with the one night I forgot to take my sanatogen pregnancy multi-vitamin.
Coincidence? I think not!

Wormshuffler · 04/10/2011 16:23

Ah good stuff sparkles you must be brewing up an olympian swimmer in there!

wombatinwaiting · 05/10/2011 17:31

Well they say good things come in thress and that's def the case here - sparkly so pleased to hear that all is well with Monts, the little blighter! Grin I too was given that info about abnormally active can be a cause for concern - I wish they'd make up their minds. Some great friends of mine adopted 2 brothers aged 6 and 4 a couple of years ago and they found that Raising Boys book invaluable. They are getting on extremely well and I still salute them for what they've done.

And kool - fantastic news re: the massively improved stats - you must feel like doing a jig (provided it doesn't make you sick of course Grin )!

And worm - woohoo for a pain-free day Grin !. Like yellow I am curious to know what you had done differently

All is well here - my last day at work is a week tomorrow which is Confused Grin Hmm Shock all at the same time. Leaving bash is next Tuesday night which I'm not sure I'm looking forward to all that much - I think I will end up having the same conversations with increasingly drunk people!

Waves to all and leaves White Twixes - they are definitely the real McCoy - sorry is it worm or harassed who works for Mars - had to buy a 5 pack just to be sure Grin

wombatinwaiting · 05/10/2011 17:34

Oh and sparkly's comment on "cop a feel of my cervix while you're about it" reminded me of this thread that I saw on the Childbirth forum - had me in stitches!

wellieboots · 06/10/2011 08:12

Woohoo for lots of happy news on here! Sorry can't namecheck on phone but so pleased for everyone...

Well I handed in my assessment for this module yesterday, now on a break til end Jan, plenty of time for wine weekends away and swi!!

Sparklywine · 06/10/2011 08:52

Well I had my first NHS antenatal class yesterday afternoon. Hard to tell if it was worth going or not.

About 20 of us shuffled into a room, about three DH's in tow (mine could not attend, exams), and sat around warily. An elderly woman with whiskers plonked herself down, and when the midwife asked gently if she meant to be here, she shouted indignantly "I've got an appointment!" She finally twigged why we were there and trotted off muttering "Oooh, I'm too old for that!" Broke the ice anyway (as did a poster I was giggling at, which stated "This is a WELL baby clinic. If your baby is not well, please leave the clinic!")
Got a bit of info about pain relief, tearing and stitching, and the fact that they will not let me eat anything once in labour - this seems to be the main fact I have managed to retain, as I had pictured myself munching on restorative toblerone or something throughout the process, and this is now to be thwarted.
Going to opt for a water birth as this way it is in the midwife-led unit and they encourage you to go home after three hours if all is well, ideal for me as I love my home and am not a fan of hospitals. Plus it will be warm and tranquil, and I am looking forward to seeing dh scoop up poo with a little net Grin

wombatinwaiting · 06/10/2011 13:33

Well done wellie - enjoy your wine and swi (they make a good combination too sometimes!)

You always make me chuckle sparkly! Interesting about the food - my bro and sil have said to make sure you get enough energy as they'd been told that giving birth is the physical/energy equivalent of running a marathon - gulp! DO they say why you shouldn't and if it's in first and second stage of labour?

oooh - am Envy of your waterbirth and mlu - would love to have a chance at a homebirth, but they are illegal here....

Sparklywine · 07/10/2011 09:12

Illegal? Blimey, hardcore. I'd quite like a homebirth too, only I'm not sure which room to do it in (the Yves Delorme would never be the same again) and would worry about the cleaning up afterwards Grin Say I needed Monty vacuumed out aswell for instance, I might panic I shall bear it in mind for the next one Grin
I think they don't want you to eat incase you have to have surgery, in which case they like you to have an empty stomach. I don't know at what stage, didn't know there were stages actually (makes mental note to pay more attention in the next antenatal class!). I think it's from the moment you get to hospital, they're quite military here in Manchester Grin
Anyone for a warmed through pain au raisin?

Sparklywine · 07/10/2011 11:18

Thread in the Pregnancy section on perineal massage, ladies!
I am still confused as to whether it is meant to be external or internal - the thread seems to lean towards the former, Yellow was advocating something altogether more intimate as I seem to remember....Grin

Wormshuffler · 07/10/2011 12:36

Morning girls,

I think it is both in and out sparkly Grin at your imagining using the hoover (and bragging abot your Meile) regarding the food, I know it's been yolks since I had mt DC's but I seen to remember you were ok to eat until you needed any pain relief and then it was a no no. Drinking was fine with gas and air I believe??? The anti-natal classes never really prepare you for anything, I used to find them an interesting way to people watch the ladies you may end up sharing a ward with/ bumping into in the baby section of John Lewis. I'm only going to go to the breast feeding one being that I am too posh to push and all.

So as for what I have done differently to stop the fanny pain. Well I just took everything alot easier and kept my knees together whenever standing up, getting in and out the car etc. Also not putting my weight on just one leg ever. I had to be a bit more boring restrained in the bedroom, thus laying in a worm-like fashion rather than allowing DH to sling my legs wherever he fancied Wink

So wombat is on 7 week countdown hey...........it does seem to be flying by now are you ready???

mrsb says hello, I messaged her on FB as I was worried about a recent status update, baby wise all still seems fine, scan booked for monday, she has been suffering with bad MS and has been off work ill.

Waves to yellow wellie (have a wine for me) kool and anyone else I may have missed.

yellowtomato · 07/10/2011 13:24

Hello ladies

I'll have the pain au raisin, ta!

Ooh I must look at that thread. To clear up what I've been told both in my active yoga and hypnobirthing class is that the perineal massage is primarily inside but differing advicee about whether to use fingers or thumbs but not to go further than second knuckle. Should feel a slight 'stinging' when you're stretching correctly and then you hold for a minute or something. Both teachers were very adamant you should do it if you don't want a torn fanjo. I think I was also given a diagram.......but I don't need that as I know where my bits are. Grin

Also interesting from my hypnobirthing course is that a lot of what they tell you is for their convenience or just cos it's always done like that rather than it being the right thing for you. Not being allowed to eat and induction were given as two examples. There is an organisation called AIMS which is an advocacy organisation for the improvement in maternity services and they produce all sorts of useful stats and literature. I've ordered a few of my leaflets so I can know the facts/my rights etc. And noone is coming between me and my food.....[greedy emotion] The booklets arrived today but I'm at work so cannot read them yet but glanced at one paragraph that said you need food/energy for labour and so should eat if you want to.

I've got 'pain relief in labour' class next week which sounds fun Hmm

I can't believe it's only 7 weeks to go for you wombat how terrifying exciting! have you bought everything you need yet?

So glad you've reduced the pain worm love your vivid 'throwing legs about' description.

wombatinwaiting · 07/10/2011 14:04

I guess that makes a bit of sense about the food thing re: operations etc. I seem to remember that all births on American TV have the women eating ice chips - could never fathom that one and am still a bit Confused

Had to Grin also about you throwing your legs around worm - could only have been you or mrsb! Thanks for the update on her by the way - can she still not get on mn or is she just avoiding us?!

Will take a look at the AIMS website later yellow - thanks for that. Terrifying is probably more applicable to me than exciting at the moment, although I do feel slightly better for a big mothercare shop today and vaguely more prepared - spent much more time and money on cute baby items than on essentials like maternity and breast pads - how very unglamorous they are.... oh, did I read somewhere that you're not supposed to use anything other than water to clean newborns? If so, when do you start to use cleansing stuff and does that also extend to other stuff such as lotions etc? I think I need to do a bit more reading!

Bit scared to read the perineal massage thread sparkly - just look at the debate you've caused on our little thread Grin but will do so at some point.....

emmaandthestar · 08/10/2011 16:31

Wow congratulations Nurse, thats really happy news!

Sorry for the uge gap in posts but my work has been crazy and have not had a chance to do any posting...

My 12 week scan was fine, low Nuchal, active, right size and all the right bits! DH is really chilled now but I am still uncertain and worried how to get through to the 20 week scan... I know some of you hired a doppler - when does it work from?

I am now 13 weeks and showing so all at work know!

As for the massage, yes it's inside and out and i think i did it once last time and I did tear - maybe I will get round to it this time!! it is still not a pleasant thing to do!

Kool really glad that your nuchal is lower risk with the bloods - you can hopefully relax too, when in April are you due? I am the 12th.

koolforcats · 08/10/2011 17:46

Aw, Emma we're almost DD buddies! Smile I'm due 4th April, yay!

I've not posted for a bit either, glad the backaches are easing and the intimate massage conversations are still in full swing!

Sparkly really happy that all is well with Mr Wriggles Smile.

Yellow so would you recommend the dream genii? Also, I was thinking of doing a hypnobirthing course later on, do you like it?

Erm...is it like inviting myself to a party if I asked to join you in Facebook? Hmm What do I do? Blush

Wormshuffler · 09/10/2011 06:44

Hi Girls
kool I'm sending you a mumsnet message with my facebook deets.

Excellent news on the 12 weeks scan emma and congratulations!! I hired a doppler through ebay it was a compan called doppler-hire, it was £9.95 a month for a basic one with no display. I didnt get the heartbeat until about 14 weeks, but could hear movements from when I got it at 12 weeks. I am sending mine back this weekend as now the movements are daily I havn't used it for ages.

I used just water for the first week wombat and then after that just added a small amount of Johnsons to the water. MrsB is just on her phone which can't post.

The whole no eating thing is silly, however when I was in labour with DD (27hours) I was sent for something to eat whilst in very early stages. It violently came back up again after an hour .
I was in the ward still and had no-where to do it and it filled up the small handwashing sink Blush ! That could be some of the reason they make you avoid it!!
I remember about 18 hours in at about 4 in the morning a lady came in while and said would you like a cup of tea............I was elated "oh yes please that would be wonderful" I said through my knackered and epiduraled up haze, unfortunately she was asking DH and I wasnt even allowed a sip!

yellowtomato · 10/10/2011 09:25

morning all

kool jury is still out on the dream genii, 50% of the time it ends up on the floor and the rest I think it's the most comfy thing ever! I don't really need anything to support my tum/between legs/hips etc yet so maybe I'll like it more when I do. My main problem is that I like sleeping on my back so much and am struggling to make the transition to sleeping on my side.

Hypnobirthing was ok....some very interesting concepts but I didn't really like the teacher and would have preferred more practical stuff. The stuff about what is often done as routine that you can object to/ask for more info on was v interesting. Such as the vitamin K injection, sweeps, vaginal inspections (or whatever they are called) Interesting on 'cascade' of interventions and inductions too. also talking about how the labour might be progressing well at home but stop or go into reverse when you get to the hospital as you don't feel so comfortable. Even a lady that went from 6 cms dilated back to 3cm! Didn't know that could happen. so learnt a lot but not sure that I've learnt enough to be able to do it.......going to a pain relief in labour course tomorrow so I guess I'll get the other side then.

How are you all getting on with choosing names? We don't seem to be making any progress here, seems an impossible task.

help yourself to a range of warm pastries and a couple of cheeky bacon sarnies.

wombatinwaiting · 10/10/2011 11:20

Woohoo emma - that's wonderful news! Grin and how lovely that you and kool are nearly due date buddies. HAve you managed to hook up with worm yet on fb? If you wanted to connect, my initials are HL and my pic is me and DH - hopefully you'll find me!

Thanks for the washing tips worm - I did have a look in the Pregnancy Bible too and that said just water, but didn't say when to start using lotions etc. so good to hear it from you. Interesting re: them refusing you a cuppa! My dsil has recommended energy drinks.

Would have liked to have gone to your hypnobirthing yellow - they are very medically oriented here and I think intervene at every opportunity they can. Had heard that about stopping dilating when going into an unfamilar environment which is another good reason to book the hosp tour sooner rather than later ( I still haven't done this!) Names took us quite a while to get to - we're now happy with our choices but only in the last couple of weeks.... presumably it's doubly difficult with the French angle to consider too?

Off to our first antenatal class tonight - I'm a bit nervous..... don't know why though!
