MamaP lovely idea.
AanR good luck this afternoon - its awful going back to the same place where you got bad news - but maybe it will excorcise some ghosts too?
I braved the Costa Rican NHS today
I figured if I am going to be paying for extra scans I should at least try and get the standard blood tests done for free. Anyone who is pissed of at the NHS read this and hopefully it will make you feel grateful!
Here is how you use the public doctors service.
Get up at 5.30am and queue in the street for 1 and a half hours outside the doctors office. Be prepared to share the pavement with the countries sickest people sneezing all over you, and remember there is no where to sit and no toilets until the doors open at 7.00am.
At 7am a nurse comes out and gives every one a little ticket with a number on, quite often there are not enough tickets for everyone so if you are at the back of the queue you will have to come back and try again tomorrow.
Everyone goes in at once to a tiny room with only 10 seats in it. Numbers are called out and you go and get "processed" which means watching someone tap into a computer for 10 minutes and scrutinising your medical ID card (this system is not free for everyone by the way, only those in paid employment and their families) Once thats done you are given an appointment time for that day which if you are early in the queue will be early in the day. (pregnant women get priority in this bit - thank god!) Then you get to see a rude doctor for 5 mins who asks you about three questions, doesnt let you speak other than to answers the questions, spends 10 mins tapping into a computer and producing 7 or 8 pieces of paper for you to take to 3 different buildings in order to get your tests/scans/next appointment done. Simple
If you have a problem you want to discuss you can either wait till your next appointment or queue up in the street the next day all over again.
Anyway - in more exiting news - I have booked my first scan (eek) - with a nice private doctor who uses the wonderfully modern concept of using the phone to book an appointment
. Its for next Wednesday. I figured I should get this first scan done now, if only to stop me cruising the twins board and letting my imagination get carried away with how many might be in there!
