TTC #2

ovumahead · 12/10/2010 13:21

Hi all,

Having just frightened myself a tad by reading the thread about those struggling to conceive number 2, I was thinking of starting a thread for those of us just starting out on this journey. I'm really hoping we won't have trouble conceiving, but I'm a pessimist!

Does anyone want to hold my hand through this process (I'm hoping for a short time only!).

To give you a little more detail, I've got one ds who is 2.5, and we want to TTC #2 between now and December if possible. The reasons for such a short time frame are that I'm on a short contract with work, and I need to get pregnant in order to still qualify for maternity pay from them (I can do this if the due date is anywhere up to 11 weeks after finishing with them). Not very interesting really, but rather a lot of pressure. If we don't conceive within this time frame (which of course I'm feeling pessimistic about!) then we will have to wait another year. And I really don't want to do that!!!

So, come on, anyone else planning for #2 soon?

Just read this article about using painkillers during pregnancy - thought you might like to know about it before you get pregnant! I've always been told paracetamol is absolutely fine to take during pregnancy, but it seems not unless it's occasional use only...

xstitchsparkler · 08/11/2010 23:02

I would never advocate using any medication in pregnancy until it was a last resort. Its a risk to benefit ratio thing. Its not good if you are immobilised with pain either. Definitely would take it if I had a fever because the high temperature would be worse than a few days of paracetamol.

They are suggesting it may be cause and effect, ie it is what caused the woman to take the analgesia that causes the problem rather than the analgesia itself. Although multiple analgesic risk seemed to make it worse although that would suggest stronger symptoms. Would never recommend ibuprofen or aspirin for analgesia in pregnancy.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 09/11/2010 18:57

greenbeans that's very exciting, good luck!

similar to me, I'm 27 with a 2yr old and actually no the more i think about I've realised it would have been a logistical and financial nightmare if I'd had number 2 by now so feeling a bit better about the 3yr age gap.

i have DS nuggled on my lap sucking a dummy wearing just his nappy...poor boy has had raging temp all day but i've coped fine until now realising the nurofen is nearly finished and we're out of calpol so am going to have to bundle DS up and walk round to the shop to get more once his temp comes down

god it's tough being a single parent with things like this!

LittleGreenBean · 10/11/2010 13:41

Girl i really hope your DS is feeling a bit better today and you managed to get some Calpol?! It's really tough having to cope on your own when kids are ill so keep going; you're doing great!

I think you're right about the gap - before i had my DS i always thought it would be great to have a small gap but when i try and think how i would have coped with the logistics, i'm a little relieved...

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 10/11/2010 19:20

he's been better towards the end of today thanks, but have kept him tanked up on calpol! Found some last night so thankfully didn't have to walk the streets with him, then a friend brought over more nurofen this morning, plus bacon butties...awesome!

the latest I've heard is not to have caffeine ttc because it prevents your body aborbing the folic acid?!

ovumahead · 10/11/2010 20:45

Girl I hope your little one gets better soon! Poor you having to get through it alone - your friend sounds ace though!

Interesting about the caffeine and folic acid. I think caffeine and babies/pregnancy is generally bad news anyway - although I think I'd really seriously struggle to give up my one or two cups of tea a day! I drank strong coffee throughout my last pregnancy. I have no idea if it had any effect on my DS, but I know once he was born I couldn't drink coffee as he'd refuse the boob afterwards! so he must have hated it in the womb, the poor lad...

Saw my friend today who had a baby in almost exactly the way I'm planning (towards the end of her contract etc) and she said she had no regrets, but it definitely made it harder... Shame she couldn't make the decision for me! But unfortunately it seems now that after I talked to DH about my concerns last week, he's really not keen to TTC now, and wants to wait. Boo. I'm kind of swinging back to trying again, although I do still have my reservations, but he seems to think it's a terrible idea (he's very busy with work, his career is really taking off, he works long hours and is a freelancer so finds it hard to turn down work and so can't really see how he could be any more supportive to me right now).

I think the hardest bit of the decision isn't really about how I would cope, but more about how my son would experience the whole thing: two busy parents, one (me) super busy and pregnant, then as soon as the work is over, BAM, new baby!

Hmmmm......

How's everyone else getting on? I'm CD5 today, so nearly nearly time to start trying for this month...Confused

OP posts:
xstitchsparkler · 10/11/2010 21:46

I'm counting this as CD7 but not quite worked out what my cycle is upto.

essenceofSES · 10/11/2010 22:20

I'm on CD3, normally ovulate around CD16.

Girl - glad your DS is doing better. Today is the first day my DS was back to himself.

ovumahead - just wanted to send you a big hug. This ttc stuff is all so difficult. Earlier on this year I really wanted to ttc but DH wasn't ready - for similar reasons to your DH. In the end we talked it through and talked about what we could do within our control to put us both in the place where we were ready to ttc.

Hello LittleGreenBean, xstitch and anyone else lurking!

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 12/11/2010 22:17

i've no idea what cd I am - last came on 26th oct....reckon i will get my next period the week after DH gets back which is rubbish in terms of not having had sex for a month but good timing as I'm working a lot that week so will be too tired to make the effort!

essenceofSES · 14/11/2010 13:07

All very quiet on here! How is everyone? Enjoying busy weekends maybe?!

It's wet and miserable here and I'm full of cold. DS currently having a nap so I should be tidying up!

ArabellaRose · 14/11/2010 13:20

Hi essence, I have just had my 2 peak days go by on CBFM without TTC earlier than planned, which was a bit of an effort. The plan is for Dec/Jan attempt. Feels like a bit of an anticlimax that another month has gone by even though I wasn't even TTC! Hormones have a lot to answer for. Sorry this isn't particularly exciting news for you so hopefully something interesting will be posted soon!

BTW I also have cold. And the baby. Considering a hot toddy - benefit of non-pregnant statusGrin

essenceofSES · 14/11/2010 22:01

ArabellaRose - I agree that hormones have a lot to answer for! Hope your cold's not dragging you or the baby down and you get a good night sleep.

We watched Strictly and XFactor tonight. Anyone else?
Better get some sleep as full on day at work tomorrow!

ovumahead · 15/11/2010 13:22

Ah I'm full of a horrible cold, nasty cough, endless snot, awful awful awful...

Using the CBFM for the first time this month and have had 3 peak fertility days so far and I'm only on CD10 - this seems weird to me, although it does say when it's monitoring your first cycle you can have more peak days than usual and that it will correct itself once it gets to know you. It's making me think that perhaps my hormones are a bit up the spout though - anyone have any ideas about this?

Thanks for the hug essence - I need it at the moment!!!

How's everyone else?

OP posts:
ovumahead · 15/11/2010 13:31

Ooops I meant I'm getting lots of 'high' fertility readings on my CBFM not lots of peaks.

OP posts:
Tw1nkle · 15/11/2010 13:41

Can I join you all please?

We're TTC#2, although DH isn't too convinced that we're 'ready'! DD is hard work, clingy, whingy etc.

I really want another though, so we're off the pill, and will see what happens.

I have endometriosis, but had operation last week to remove it, plus a cyst, so hopefully that will stay away long enough to conceive. I also have 6-weekly cycles, so hopefully those will reduce now too, although I'm not too sure they will.

They also discovered that i have a sub septate uterus (heart-shaped), so that explains why our DD was premature, and also means that if we're luck enough to conceive again, the next baby may also be premature, so I'll be classed as high-risk.

DH thinks that we should maybe stick at just one child because of all the above - but I really really want 2 - what's meant to be will be I suppose.

We used PreSeed last time round and it worked, but DH won't let me use it just yet - as he's not 100% on the idea.

Good Luck to all of you.

ovumahead · 15/11/2010 13:47

Twinkle - welcome! Sounds like you still have some talking to do with your dp...

Have you been told you can TTC right after having the op for endometriosis? Did you have a laperoscopy? I had one about 5 years ago and felt bloody awful afterwards!

Best of luck with TTC, and sorry to hear you've had endo and also a subseptate uterus. Lots of things to think about!

How old is your dd?

OP posts:
Tw1nkle · 15/11/2010 13:53

Hi ovumahead,

Yes, me a DH still have talking to do, so we're not talking temperature and all the other stuff we tried last time, we're just taking it steady to start with and see what happens - I'm pleased he's agreed for me to come off pill though.

Yes, I had a laparoscopy last week - and yes, I still feel really tired, but pain isn't so bad now.

Apparently the Endo wasn't too bad, so that was a relief. The uterus thing does bother me though as DD was premature and I had retained placenta, which is classic symptoms of it apparently. Subsequent births are meant to be better though, plus they'll know up front next time, so I should be monitored more closely, and taken more seriously (no-one believed that I was in labour last time!!!)

My DD turned 2 last week, and I'd really like another by the time she is 4, as I don't want too much of an age gap. So there is no real rush, but time flies so quickly these days, that i'm happy that we're kind of trying anyway!

essenceofSES · 16/11/2010 21:05

Hello all!

Have been full of cold and all bunged up the last couple of days. It's Wednesday tomorrow which means my day off work tomorrow to spend with DS. Hope I wake up feeling a bit better!

Tw1nkle - welcome to the thread. I'm trying really hard not to say anything negative to DH at the moment about copping with DS or DS +DC2 as I know it will worry him! I'll have 9mo once pg to try and work out how we'll manage between us!
I don't think your heart-shaped uterus should be anything to worry about. Now they know, they'll just keep an eye on it.

ovumahead - I use the CBFM and I'm sure the first month I used it, I ended up testing most mornings and had quite a few highs. Now it doesn't normally ask me to start testing until CD10.
Hope your cold is feeling better?

How's everyone else doing?

ovumahead · 17/11/2010 08:53

Still full of cold here, feeling awful! A couple of people have said to me recently 'you ought to be in bed with that cold!' but I honestly never thought people took days off to rest when they have a cold... but this is a particularly bad one. Ho hum. Sinuses are absolutely killing me though!

Still really ambivalent about whether to TTC at the moment... keep changing my mind! Ugh...

How's everyone else?

OP posts:
LittleGreenBean · 17/11/2010 13:28

Sorry to hear folks are struggling with colds atm, my DP has picked up something unplesent at work so am trying to avaoid him (ironic while TTC i guess Smile). I'm thinking that a month is a hell of a long time to have to wait to find out whether you're preggers or not.
First time round i had no real expectations of how long things might take and then conceived within a month of stopping pill. Of course, now i'm hoping that the same thing will happen, but who knows...keep trying to stop thinking about things as it's still another couple of weeks until i might miss AF.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 18/11/2010 18:30

colds sound horrid, hope you all get better soon

welcome tw1nkle and good luck, sounds like you have some stuff to work out but it's worth trying isn't it?

I've been making the most of not having a pregnancy, husband or DS (mum has him 2 days a week at the moment so I can rehearse) and have had 2 days filled with whisky and putting the world to rights until the early hours - including having a few friends up staying over last night after the whisky and chat went on until 5am! Was lovely actually, then DS came home and has been a treasure but we'll both be getting an early night tonight

Magen · 20/11/2010 02:01

Hi ladies! I am 31 and am on my second cycle TTC #2. DD is 16 months old. This month has been my first attempt to predict ovulation. I have a saliva scope and checked my cm. I am still having partial ferning, but never had full ferning. I had ewcm for two days but only in the morning. DH and I have BD everyday since I saw the ferning so I feel like I have given it my all this cycle. DH is out tonight, but we may give it a go tomorrow just to cover my bases. I hate trying to figure out when I am going to ovulate. I wish it was obvious, like your urine would turn blue or something! Anyway, it is nice to have some women I can relate to and best wishes to everyone!

Magen · 20/11/2010 02:03

It may seem like I am posting at weird times, but I am in the States. Just stumbled on this site and everyone seems so nice Smile

essenceofSES · 20/11/2010 15:55

Welcome Magen :)
Using a salivascope to look at ferning is about the only method I've never used so interested to know more!

Girl - rehearse? Have I missed something? What are you rehearsing for?

Hope everyone with a cold is shaking it off and everyone else is staying clear. Mine is still lingering but on the way out. DH has it now and declared he has manflu. He even announced his manflu on FB. I had to chuckle when one of his work colleagues pointed out that he needed to be a man to suffer with manflu!

ovumahead · 20/11/2010 19:20

Welcome Magen - good luck with the salivascope - never used one, but they look interesting!

Have had success with the CBFM in my first month this month - it told me I ovulated! Yay! Was worried (because I'm an expert at worrying really...) and I have short cycles so was concerned about having a short luteal phase, but it seems to fit well with the rest of my usual cycle. Haven't TTC this month, feeling too exhausted and am still ambivalent about it. Well, TBH, I've been depressed for a while (but functioning very well, just a long term underlying depression) and I'm toying with the idea of taking antidepressants for a while to see if they help. Obviously I don't want to TTC and take antidepressants all at the same time...

Anyway, that's my latest! How's everyone else?

(still have a terrible cold, it's been over a week now! Can't believe how crap I feel. Am away for the weekend staying with a very quiet relative, so am hoping to get heaps of sleep...)
