TTC #2

ovumahead · 12/10/2010 13:21

Hi all,

Having just frightened myself a tad by reading the thread about those struggling to conceive number 2, I was thinking of starting a thread for those of us just starting out on this journey. I'm really hoping we won't have trouble conceiving, but I'm a pessimist!

Does anyone want to hold my hand through this process (I'm hoping for a short time only!).

To give you a little more detail, I've got one ds who is 2.5, and we want to TTC #2 between now and December if possible. The reasons for such a short time frame are that I'm on a short contract with work, and I need to get pregnant in order to still qualify for maternity pay from them (I can do this if the due date is anywhere up to 11 weeks after finishing with them). Not very interesting really, but rather a lot of pressure. If we don't conceive within this time frame (which of course I'm feeling pessimistic about!) then we will have to wait another year. And I really don't want to do that!!!

So, come on, anyone else planning for #2 soon?

wow you've been through so so much. Only you know the answer hun, maybe waiting for next year would be better, would you still have the same 2 month window? If you don't think like you'd cope then give yourself a break and a chance to collect yourself, no age gap is the ideal one...whatever happens you're right that you need to think of yourself first - especially after the pregnancy and birth experience you had with DS

xx

Thanks every one. And essence by writing about my problems on here, I really am asking for advice, so advise away!

I've got a friend who did exactly the same thing as I'm considering doing, and she did get pregnant and her baby is now a few weeks old. She's coming round for lunch next week so I'm going to have a good chat to her about her experiences. I know it wouldn't be exactly the same for me, but it might give me some idea!

Thanks everyone. x

Hope you are ok ovum. tbh I don't think there ever is a 'right' time. Just go with what feels right.

Well I have started bleeding big time. My only question is how do I work out my cycle now with it being so haywire.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 04/11/2010 12:45

oh xstitch I'm sorry hun, well at least you know what's going on now. I guess you could get one of those fertility monitor things to at least work out when you're fertile after this period?

We had sex the day DH left in futile attempt I might have been fertile 6 days after period, but that's it for me for a month! Booooooo...

essenceofSES · 04/11/2010 13:09

Hello!

xstitch - hope you're not feeling too bad. I have one of those ClearBlue Fertility Monitors - quite expensive but good for an obsessive ttcer like me!

ovum - sounds like a good plan to chat with your friend.

GirlwiththeMouseyHair - hope your GOF was timed ok. Is your DH back in time for next month if not?!

My temps have dropped the last couple of days so I think I'm out this month. In fact I'm sure of it :( I so want to get pg asap but the next couple of months could be tricky as DH is really busy at work. If it's ok, I think I'll be hanging around here a little while yet!

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 04/11/2010 17:43

essence you're going to have to explain stuff to me - in an attempt to not become ttc obsessed I have no idea about anything ttc related!

So, GOF? And if you're temp has dropped does that mean you're not fertile anymore? But you could still have fallen pregnant surely?

DH gets back on 20th, in theory I won't have my next period until 30th but last period was a week early so god knows!

essenceofSES · 04/11/2010 20:43

GirlWithTheMouseyHair - warning! only read my posts if you've reconciled yourself to being ttc obsessed!

First off, a GOF is a Good Ol' F**k Grin

As far as temping goes, you need a special fertility thermometer as it measures to the nearest 0.01 degree celcius. The temperature changes you look for areonly obvious at this sensitivity.
Temperatures should be taken at the same time every morning on waking and before getting out of bed.

Basically, you see a definitive shift in the temperature upwards within 24hrs of ovulation. It is therefore possible to know when you have ovulated but you don't get warned in advance! This shift is normally maintained for anywhere between 4 and 8 days. If there is implantation, a one day dip in temperature normally happens and then the temperatures go back up and continue to stay high. With my DS, this was fairly obvious and encouraged me to test!

Sorry, I ended up going into loads of detail then and you probably know most of it Blush

Anyway, my temperature didn't sustain the increase with ovulation this month and has dipped back down so I know I'm out this month. To give you an idea, pre-ovulation this month, my temps were between 36.25 and 36.47, I got a sudden increase to 36.77 on CD16 which indicates that I ovulated on CD15. My temps then stayed between 36.72 and 36.95 until CD21 when it dropped to 36.35, peaked the next day (I don't know why) at 36.93 and then fell again and has stayed low.

You may have heard of a website called Fertility Friend which would explain all the signs and symptoms of ovulation and pregnancy much better than I have!

Fingers crossed for you this month and if not, sounds like things will be timed well for next month for you :)

EdwardorEricCantdecide · 05/11/2010 00:14

Hi all
can i join my 1st post so still really new to this.
i have 1 ds 18mths and although haven't been using contraception since his birth not really been trying either, but dh and i decided to start trying "properly". took well over a yr to conceive ds though hoping won't be as long as i'm really impatient.

essenceofSES · 05/11/2010 09:23

Welcome EdwardorEricCantdecide :)

I've only just joined this thread although have been on MN since ttc DS who is 18mo next week.

We're in a similar boat as it took over a year for us to conceive DS and I'm also rubbish at being patient :)

Hello everyone else - hope you're all ok today?

ArabellaRose · 05/11/2010 10:04

I'm on CD9 and starting to feel very broody as I know am approaching fertile phase. However I can't TTC until Dec as it would be inconvenient with work if earlier. SIGH. Wish I could get started this month! So jealous of all you who are SWI! Good luck to all anyway!

xstitchsparkler · 05/11/2010 10:25

I know what you mean Arabella but December isn't that long away.

LittleGreenBean · 05/11/2010 13:13

Hi everyone, can i join too?

We have a 2 yr old DS and we're both keen to have another baby. Although it's probably not ideal with work situation we have decided to ttc anyway so i stopped taking pill on Tuesday. This was half way through teh pack so am slightly concerned that i will have confused my body a bit (but never was very good at keeping track of my cycle/when ovulating etc) but hoping it will all pan out ok... Smile

ArabellaRose · 05/11/2010 13:37

Hi greenbean, don't worry about finishing pills mid-pack, it won't do any harm. I think I read that you are particularly likely to get pregnant immediately after stopping the pill, is this right? That's good for you if so!

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 05/11/2010 19:46

oh lord essence I think I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and admit I need to pay more attention....so all the detail is good!

welcome littlegreenbean...seconding arabella on the pill front, apparently there's a fertility spike when you come off it, which was true for us 1st time round. Wishing now I'd taken the pill after DS just to have had the spike this time round!

LittleGreenBean · 05/11/2010 22:07

Thanks folks - i'll be keeping my fingers crossed! Good luck to you all too.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 06/11/2010 08:42

do you all mind me asking how old everyone is? am getting stressed again today about age gaps...I so badly wanted 2 children within 2 years and though I know we've made the decisions right for our family and especially me personally (and how I'd cope now tih a newborn and toddler on my own for 3 weeks I don't know) but keep thinking DS will be so much older than any other children we might have

xstitchsparkler · 06/11/2010 08:51

Girl my dd is 5, lots of reasons for the age gap.

ArabellaRose · 06/11/2010 09:35

Hi Mousey, I'm 34 and have a 9 month old. Broody last couple of months at least but have to wait till dec at earliest for ttc because would be inconvenient with work otherwise? Not looking forward to baby + morning sickness+ work all at once! But I'm too old for waiting too long

ovumahead · 07/11/2010 12:01

Hi all, sorry to be so infrequent posting on here when I started the thread in the first place!

Thanks for all your advice, and welcome newbies!

I think despite everything, I'm going to TTC from this month. CD2 today, with usually short cycles (24-26 days) so not long to wait! I realised last week that if I get a job in a different company after my current contract expires, I'd have to wait until I'd been with them for a few months before I'd qualify for maternity pay - does anyone know more about this? (I work for the NHS now, so even if you get a job in a different trust, your time in the NHS is what counts so I'd be fine...).

Am also using a CBFM for the first time this month, just to up the paranoia/checking/obsession levels... Do any of you know if it would tell you if you were pregnant? (Should read the instructions really).

I bought it because I'm totally rubbish at remembering to take my temperature every morning... How do those of you that do manage to do that remember (did that sentence make any sense?!)

xstitch sorry AF has returned... How are you feeling?

OP posts:
GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 07/11/2010 12:34

i have absolutely no answers for your questions ovumahead but pleased that you've made your decision and yay to officially ttc number 2!

my first week of 3 as a single parent is nearly over and it's been fine thanks to lots of friends and family being around but next week is looking a bit empty and the week after that I have no plans apart from rehearsals so it might end up getting a bit scary and lonely!

I don't know how single parents do this full time, massive respect to them!

xstitchsparkler · 07/11/2010 23:01

I'm not too bad thanks ovum. I am feeling a bit run down because there has been so much bleeding.

I'm not sure about starting with a new company. I think if you fall pregnant even on the first day in a new job you are ok but don't know where the actual cut off lies.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 08/11/2010 00:28

Isn't it something like working 20 weeks within the 60 before you're due date?

essenceofSES · 08/11/2010 12:19

Hello all!

Miserable day here - DS is ill too:( He's had a temperature on and off since Friday and then went all lethargic yesterday and was sick so we took him up to the hopsital to get checked over. Turns out he's got a nasty bout of tonsillitis. I'm "working from home" this morning and then DH is coming home for about 2pm so I can go to a meeting this afternoon. Hoping DS makes a quick recovery and can go back to nursery tomorrow as it will be difficult to take time off work.

ovumahead - I think GirlWithTheMouseyHair is right but you could always post a thread on the employment boards - FloweryBeanbag is a bit of an expert over there!
I use the CBFM - great for advance warning of ovulation but I don't think it will tell you if you are pg.

xstitchsparkler - hope the bleeding eases soon for you.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair - I just had 4 days last week with DH away so well done on your first week. Hope the remainder goes quickly and smoothly for you.

ArabellaRose - you're not too old! I'm 38 next Feb Shock

Hello everyone else!

LittleGreenBean · 08/11/2010 19:58

Hi again all - it's good to catch up. What with a busy weekend and then working FT i don't get anywhere near enough time to come on Mumsnet!
Thanks for all the comments; I?m sure things will work themselves out. After stopping pill on Tuesday, AF came on Friday and really heavy (I know how you feel, Xstitch). Am feeling quite positive and excited (when I?m away from work at least, which is just a downer most of the time atm). I'm 28 with a 2 year old and really didn't want a very big gap either, although i certainly didn't feel able to take on having a second baby until about now...
Glad to hear you've decided to take the plunge ovum - best of luck Smile

ovumahead · 08/11/2010 21:18

Thanks ladies! I will check out the relevant bits of mumsnet for some employment advice.

xstitch make sure you take some iron if you're bleeding really heavily! You must feel really drained. Poor you.

Big fertile hugs all round gals, let's hope we see some BFPs soon!!!
