Quite simple really. I think tinsel is naff, my mum thinks I am a snob. Who is right?

wontbepreggersagain · 16/12/2008 14:16

agree- its banned in our house.

harpsiheraldangelssing · 16/12/2008 14:17

yes it's naff
I am sorry for you, though, if you are having a tasteful Christmas

georgimama · 16/12/2008 14:19

Oh god no, nothing tasteful about it, I just hate tinsel. I will be there on the sofa with the paper hat from a cracker and a box of After Eight Mints, watching the Queen's speech and drinking fizz like everyone normal.

Yuk! Hate tinsel.

ByThePowerOfBaileys · 16/12/2008 14:20

no tinsel downstairs.
DS1 wanted some for his room so he has decorated his room with some.

mazzystartled · 16/12/2008 14:22

hate tinsel

not averse to a bucketload of lametta [or silvery shite as it is known in our house] draped over the tree though

MincePirateCat · 16/12/2008 14:25

i love tinsel, we have silver. it's v pretty on our real tree. dd would have had gold or red, or pink, but i persuaded her that silver was the way to go.

MadamAntlers · 16/12/2008 14:26

I LOVE tinsel. Only the silver stuff though, and only on the tree.

Why is it considered naffer than any other Christmassy decoration? Are baubles naff?

Actually, I think lametta is a bit tacky (sorry mazzy).

Funny I posed this question to DH on SUnday. We use tinsel, but it has just occured to me how naff it is and I have been posing the idea of banning it this year in favour of something more natural looking. What is it supposed to be an imitation of anyway?

WhenFRUITYgotstuckupthechimney · 16/12/2008 14:28

What I'm permanently being accused of being a snob but I still have two pieces of tinsel on my tree. They are black and silver with a few little silver stars on.
My tree looks very tasteful

As long as you don't go overboard then a bit of tinsel is always nice.

MadamAntlers · 16/12/2008 14:28

And georgi you watch the Queen's speech??

Are you very working class?

daftpunk · 16/12/2008 14:29

love tinsel...christmas trees should be about fun and colour...plenty of time to be boring in january.

georgimama · 16/12/2008 14:29

No idea what it is supposed to be.

We have strings of beads and little bells instead, much prettier.

The only tinsel in this house is in DD's bedroom, and it's pink!

WhenFRUITYgotstuckupthechimney · 16/12/2008 14:31

Erm, I just "google imaged" Lametta as I wasn't sure what it was (I had an idea but wasn't sure) I got some horrible images back Are you sure that is what it's called?

georgimama · 16/12/2008 14:31

I work for a living so I suppose I am.

Doesn't everyone watch the Queen's Speech?

I obviously need to start a thread about that too, that'll solve the MN class obsession in one go. If you don't watch the Queen's Speech, congratulations, you are officially middle class.

My family always had tinsel on tree but when DP and I got together he was against and his mother soon informed me that they 'didn't do tinsel'
Snob!
Tinsel as long as its in good nick is cheery.

PoinsettiaPussyCat · 16/12/2008 14:34

No tinsel here. And no Queen's speech either!

( @ Lametta - it surely can't be that?)

southeastastra · 16/12/2008 14:35

wow the things i learn from mumsnet.

tinsel is naff
itv is banned

mind boggles

MadamAntlers · 16/12/2008 14:35

lametta is also the Italian for razor blade

PoinsettiaPussyCat · 16/12/2008 14:37

For decoration tho??

daftpunk · 16/12/2008 14:37

yeah..i'm beginning to think that about mn

it's life southeastastra.. but not as we know it

MincePirateCat · 16/12/2008 14:40

i have also got multi coloured lights on my tree this yr. we started off with the white ones, and dd6 wasn't impressed.

tbh, neither was I !! so we swapped them. They look fab, and it looks , well, Christmassy!!

WhenFRUITYgotstuckupthechimney · 16/12/2008 14:41

Ahhh, that is why those nasty images popped up on my screen then, I feel quite sick now
