Quite simple really. I think tinsel is naff, my mum thinks I am a snob. Who is right?

No tinsel in this house either.

I don't think I'll ever forget what razor blade in Italian is now!
So If I'm in Italy without my Wilkinson Sword then I'll be fine

CoV can you help me here sorry to hijack thread

georgimama · 16/12/2008 14:45

My SIL wasn't allowed to watch ITV at all as a child. That's how middle class she is.

No. It comes from Hell. And it should go back there.

expatinscotland · 16/12/2008 14:48

no because of the cat.

WhenFRUITYgotstuckupthechimney · 16/12/2008 14:49

pmsl @ MadamAntlers

WhenFRUITYgotstuckupthechimney · 16/12/2008 14:50

ooh, my Mum always frowned upon ITV. All my friends were watching all the best programs (IMO) and I was stuck with Blue Peter and Newsround

noonki · 16/12/2008 14:58

I heart tinsel and hate the Queen's speech... does that make me classless !!!

No tinsel here, no glitter on another thread, what is wrong with your people!?

poinsettydog · 16/12/2008 19:03

You are a snob. Major league.

People who trill about how horrid tinsel is, are the epople who are far too involved in home magazines and cath kidston. Although by now, they might consider CK passe and have moved on to some other tosh.

expatinscotland · 16/12/2008 19:06

what's wrong with tinsel? is it a class thing? eh?

i'm foreign.

i like it.

just can't have it because of the cat.

poinsettydog · 16/12/2008 19:09

It's not a class thing, expat. It's a modern lifestyle thang. Someone prob read about it in teh times sunday spread

expatinscotland · 16/12/2008 19:11

i read the Sunday Times.

i just like all the magazines it comes with.

but it doesn't dictate how i live my life.

poinsettydog · 16/12/2008 19:15

ah yes, but magaziney lifestyle things do infleuce how quite a few people live their lives, expat.

Tinsel is just not en vogue

expatinscotland · 16/12/2008 19:19

i wish it could influence me more, pointy , have you seen the cost of most of the clothes and shoes in there?

i wish!

poinsettydog · 16/12/2008 19:20

er, I don't read sunday papers any more .

TipsyFairydifferentID · 16/12/2008 19:26

We have tinsel- because it's cheap even fro the good stuff. We have silver/white/silver on our tree and silver wrapped around curtain poles and mirror with purple aropund picture frame
I don't care if people think it's naff.

Umlellala · 16/12/2008 19:39

LOADS of tinsel here.

On our tree is red, purple, blue, silver and gold tinsel. And multicoloured lights. I didn't even know we had differently coloured tinsel but dd(2.6) found it and threw it at the tree.

Apparently, tinsel comes from the Christmas dragon who breathes out tinsel not fire

Am with harpsi et al, PMSL at tasteful, colour-co-ordinated Christmas decs.

georgimama · 16/12/2008 19:48

In my defence my snobbery must be innate because long before I had ever heard of Cath Kidston (and I really don't like her fabrics anyway) I tried to prevent my mum from putting the bits of broken egg box sprayed silver and covered in glitter which passed for decorations that we had made. I have had a thing against tinsel for a long time.

I am prepared to be called a snob but not a Sunday Times sheep.

What's the matter with tinsel? My tree went up today, and is festooned with gold sprayed pine cones, little bells on a string of beads, red and green baubles, little red glittery stars, and copious amounts of gold tinsel. I love it! It looks cosy and very festive.

NotBigJustBolshy · 16/12/2008 19:52

My Christmas tree is "tasteful", but everything else is sparkly and naff. Loads of tinsel. I think the fetish for "natural" is a bit daft. Tbh, worrying too much about whether something is naff or not is naff in itself - so there.

MmeHereWeGoAWassailLindt · 16/12/2008 19:59

Tinselfree household here as it is difficult to get in Germany and considered the height of kitsch. Don't know anyone who has tinsel (except my dh's boss and he is foreign)

Same for multicoloured lights. Not the done thing in Germany.

The trend here is a one colour tree, a couple of years ago everyone had a blue theme, last year was black and/or white.
