Hi all. I'm just caretaking until Reastie returns, but here's our new thread. Please do use up the old one first though.

This is intended as a friendly, kind, safe, warm and fuzzy place for people to share discounts, bargains and Christmas gift ideas both online and IRL. Please note the tone and intention of the thread and join with spirit as generous as DC helping themselves to the Christmas chocolate celebrations

Here’s some useful information about how to save the thread or a specific post so you don’t need to have a message to check in for every thread so you have the thread saved:

To watch the thread - click on the little bell that has ‘watch’ under my first message. This adds the whole thread to your ‘watched threads’

You can also bookmark a specific post by clicking on the ‘bookmark’ under the specific post. This saves your exact place in a thread but doesn’t alert you to new replies.

If you have any referral links or codes, please share them on the referral thread here:

A reminder that we don't use affiliated links on here please

Famousthehero · 05/11/2026 12:14

by the way if anybody is near an Aldi I saw an influencer unboxing the Bluey campfire box and it looked SO GOOD for £12.99

they also have Winnie the Pooh, frozen and Toy Story ones (TS looks good on the website, think it’s a fishing game with a mine cart?)

lucky there’s no Aldi by us or I’d be tempted to get one despite DC being far too old for them

I don’t know if anyone can help, but my DS has randomly requested a ‘skin’ aka leather water bottle. Something like the picture, however I doubt a bargainous one, that is actually safe to drink from will be able to be found!

🎄

I'm going to sound like such a massive Grinch (again) but if you're buying presents for big readers, please think carefully about these "blind date" packages.

If I had a friend lovely enough to spend £10 on a book for me, then I have a wishlist of books that I really want and which would make me extremely happy to find in a parcel. I've also had great surprise choices from friends who've chosen a book they thought I'd love or a recommendation from a bookseller.

I've had blind date type gifts before and ultimately I end up with a few sweeties, some pretty wrapping that goes in the bin, and a random book that I don't want to read. Usually (in my personal experience) a remaindered book of the type that The Works struggle to sell for a couple of quid.

Sorry to be negative.

HRTtoHeart · 05/11/2026 12:34

I agree, with a caveat - the ones sold at 'proper' independent bookshops are usually decent books - I've had a Graham Greene, a Simon Scarrow etc. The ones sold in cute kits I've seen have been The Works type rubbish.

@InbetweenDreams

I have just received a shipped notification from Tipi. Finally!

How disappointing they are messing you around over payment 😢

The candy swirl.

The Guiness Book of Records is half price at Waterstones.

Shufflebumnessie · 05/11/2026 13:30

🎄 Apologies if this has already been mentioned but The Inkey List currently has 35% off a £50 spend & 50% off £100 spend, with free postage on both options, if you're a member of their loyalty scheme (just need to create a free account on their website).

If anyone wants £10 off their first purchase I can forward a referral code.

Ooh, and £8.98 on Amazon. One of my DCs always asks for it, so that's handy to get it now,

Would anyone have a Smyth's code they would be kind enough to let me have via a PM to avoid a lurker swiping it please?

I didn’t realise Smyths do discount codes?! Is that blue light or student?

Coming up as £6.35 for me? Must have missed it.

I've ordered a crime / mystery one for myself - I'll post a pic when it arrives.

I don't know how Really Rae manages to do these for a tenner, including free shipping - she can't be making much, if any, profit with everything that's included - the special wrapping paper, little treats and the books themselves?

I looked on the website and delivery is paid for. How did you get free delivery?

Ah shame, looks like it may have sold out. I managed to grab one at that price for myself.

Edit - just noticed Morrisons have it at the same price

I made a request on thread 1 or 2 and got the perfect solution within about 3 posts so I’m here again looking for help.

DH wants a record player. He listens to music all the time and never asks for anything so I’m going to get him one. But I don’t want one of those big side board deals I remember from the 80’s and speakers that’ll annoy the neighbours. i know nothing about record players because I wasn’t allowed to touch the one we had because it cost more than the car or something.

any suggestions? I don’t want to spend 10k but I don’t want that won’t work either. I guess I better find out where you buy records as well.

thanks everyone. I read this thread everyday and have spent a fortune, keep up the good work.

TheGirlWhoLived · 05/11/2026 14:46

Tried scrolling back to see who posted about the Minecraft book calendar, thanks so much! Perfect for my ds, it’s arrived today and is exactly what I needed

I need one too. More budget end, but not shite, if such a thing exists!

elb1504 · 05/11/2026 15:16

They have record players like this...

You can connect your own speakers if need to be louder or headphones etc...

Reviews look ok if its just for occasional use but better ones have better in built speakers etc.. but are more expensive. There's loads on amazon so worth seeing if they are suitable and the reviews.

As for records if you have an independent record shop near by they are great for advice and picking up bargains- we have 2 in my local town so might be one nearby

Do you have any bluetooth speakers that you could use with it? Because it depends if you need a whole system or just the record player.

If you have speakers already, I would recommend one like this: https://www.johnlewis.com/audio-technica-at-lp70xbtws-bluetooth-turntable-white-silver/p112486357?s_ppc=2dx_mixed_technology_BAU&tmad=c&tmcampid=2&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=20155421231&gbraid=0AAAAAD2el1wPhkbsXE2p69g1N0DmUD7tu&gclid=Cj0KCQiA77DXBhCHARIsAHf2MNriMcDgdwiANAMhM1Q6Qk_rasrgM4hr5PalY1B-JUiboAIQpMOoMOgaAmgSEALw_wcB
I think they look modern and neat, but equally might not be what you're after if you want nostalgia.

If you don't have speakers, I would still probably buy the speakers and record player separately, as the ones with built-in speakers aren't usually the best quality. i love the look of the Marshall ones, but you should shop around for a good deal https://www.argos.co.uk/product/8946544?utm_custom6=PLA&region_id=02903m&deeplink=true&gclsrc=aw.ds&&cmpid=GS001&_$ja=tsid:59157|acid:416-707-6621|cid:20248059078|agid:|tid:|crid:|nw:x|rnd:9773579423851445311|dvc:c|adp:|mt:|loc:9045888&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=20248059078&utm_term=8946544&utm_content=shopping&utm_custom1=&utm_custom2=416-707-6621&GPDP=true&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=19663905000&gbraid=0AAAAAD9II9nHB4yUmx_RWL1SVoHOIgvTq&gclid=Cj0KCQiA77DXBhCHARIsAHf2MNrZb-r9QANY84z0XIVfMZMRYQJ0-XS3P7JXWnIGgoPrTxnSBPICmGIaArp2EALw_wcB

Sorry for records, I would recommend charity shops for any older stuff, and you can often find stalls at farmers markets or the like, although I think they are sometimes overpriced. For new stuff, HMV are good for a browse if you have one nearby.

I'd go to Richer Sounds for advice, no need to necessarily purchase from them. Staff there are really helpful and knowledgeable and there will be black Friday offers.

I was just about to say the same! They're great, and to be fair do also tend to have the best prices.
