What’s on your list (if you’re a woman who actually wants stuff)

If you’re the type of woman says “all I want for Christmas is a hug from my children and a single Ferrero Rocher” then that’s absolutely lovely but not what I’m asking. I need ideas for stuff for myself, lovely things I may not have come across, to put on my Christmas list!!

So far I have a voucher for a Margaret Dabbs medical pedicure
A new casserole dish, Le Creuset style
The secret of cooking by Bee Wilson
A little zip up thing to put in my handbag with my essentials

I’d love some really nice knitwear also.
What sort of lovely things are on your lists?

I’m not normally a person who wants stuff but this year I do have a list.

I had a second lobe piercing this year so some new gold studs or small hoops.

My hairdryer died and I’m using a crappy one so a decadent new one would be nice.

Some chocolate with nuts or chocolate oranges. DH generously gets me a massive box of Hotel Chocolate but he always gets the fruity ones when I want the nutty ones, or dark chocolate when I want milk #ungrateful

Maybe one of these phone bags, need to find a really nice one:

I also like these corduroy tote/shopper bags:

This jewellery roll is lovely in real life: https://www.lisaangel.co.uk/navy-celestial-velvet-jewellery-roll

My Bose headphones are finally dying after 15 years but they are £££ I think.

Wishful thinking present - one of these paintings to go in the kitchen:

I have 2 of the necklaces and 2 pairs of earrings, they are gorgeous! And Cara Tonkin was lovely when I met her briefly at a launch event in my local jewellers :)

I am very much a woman who loves things.

Does anyone else have a real list and a dream list? Both are enjoyable to think about!

Real list would include good books, lovely notepads, new soft PJs, cashmere socks, chocolate, voucher for a SkinRocks facial and some Chanel body cream and hair mist. Maybe another bottle of my favourite perfume, and some candles.

On the dream list would be a copper Bramwell Brown weather clock, a Cartier love bangle, another bangle I fell in love with on holiday, a sauna for the garden and a couple of pieces of art that I can't stop thinking about.

I have a copper bramwell that I asked my parents to buy me for my 50th when they had no ideas - it was in their refurbished sale that happens a couple of times a year and was immaculate. Honestly it’s one of my top 3 favourite possessions and since I lost my dad a year later it reminds me of him many times a day.

Treat yourself !

Just on a thread about how to manage as a lone parent, and another about too much shit and tat, and I’m pleased to say that even as a lone parent I get some bloody good stuff at Christmas. My kids always get me a good book (they will properly speak to a person at Waterstones and last year took a photo of my bookshelf to show them), they always get me despicably tasty and fattening/sugary expensive treats, and Lego. They save up their rewards vouchers from school and pocket money and combine it.

I buy myself things I think are a bit expensive after summer and put away until Christmas for myself. I’ve done it for years, we all do the playing along and the “oh wow, Father Christmas must have measured me in my sleep, as this fits perfectly” silliness. Everyone gets a 1st December new set of Christmas pjs including me, I do treat myself a fair bit as a lone parent and my kids seem to have taken it on now.

This years list:
Cleopatra by Saara El-Arifi, anything in this genre is good
anything praline-y or pecan-y or pistachio-y
nice big non-ugly golf style umbrella
Clarins tonic oil I’m obsessed
anything jojoba smelling
anything from l’occitaine
small cross stitch or paint by numbers artsy thing
Lego ET (I will get this for myself as too much for the kids)

How lovely that your kids save up their money to get you things on their own. And what a great idea to take a photo of the book shelf and ask for recommendations, I bet the staff in Waterstones loved that too.

You have to give the gifter a coin if they give you a knife. I have no idea why.

I think it's because the knife would 'cut' the connection between the giver and receiver. So because the receiver is technically paying for the knife it doesn't happen. Or something.....!

idontknowwhattodo2026 · 24/10/2026 12:40

Thank you, that’s very kind. I think they’ve finally taken on board the lessons on how to treat the people you love. For anyone still in the trenches of selfishness, it can improve! I don’t have their dad around to do the whole giving examples of how people should treat each other as partners thing, so me treating myself kindly and having boundaries, being fair and respectful to the kids, has been my only way of example. It’s getting there, the last couple of years I’ve been blown away by their thoughtfulness. I used to get nothing when I was still with their dad! To know I’ll wake up on Christmas morning to something luxurious and beautiful is so nice, I’ve never had that in my life even as a child from my own parents!
