I always really enjoy the (light hearted) threads around Christmas , especially afterwards.
The ones where the poster got one roastie and hardly any gravy , or got the present back they gave to someone last year ,the inlaws who refuse to put the heating on, or have it so hot you want to pass out ,
Please share !!

MIL walked in with a massive trifle she’d kindly made for pudding … and promptly dropped the whole thing on the floor right in front of the front door. There was glass and custard everywhere!

Perfect timing for gathering material for an article in the media pre Xmas. What publication are you writing for OP?

The dog bit my mum who had to go to hospital, dog immediately taken to vet to be put down. Trauma all round, we ended up having sausages for xmas dinner.

Yeah, I mean come on they could at least have made an effort here.

OP if you're not a journalist, you need at least to offer your own story if you want to sound not like someone compiling a listicle.

Why is this in AIBU?

Facecreamed · 12/10/2026 07:32

You first, OP.

My ex partner said he would get the stuff for Christmas dinner for us and my two children . On Christmas Eve he started shopping and came home with a turkey, a few sausages and some weary veg. I had to rush out and try and find some nice bits. On Christmas Eve night he announced he had booked himself into a pretty nice local hotel as his drinking ( he drank a lot) would only spoil our Christmas Day ! On Christmas Day there was a power cut in the area . We managed a late Christmas dinner but his hotel couldn’t cook the works for lots of people and he ended up with them making fish and chips. Karma 😂

MyFavouriteGame · 12/10/2026 08:02

Why are you shouting?

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 12/10/2026 08:04

There was a storm in the early hours of Christmas morning. I woke up to repeated banging outside. I looked out and realised a fence panel had broken and was banging against of the rabbit hutch. Ended up outside in my pyjamas, wellies and anorak, moving the rabbit hutch and securing the broken piece of fence to prevent the lot from coming down.

Another year I took the dog out for a quick walk after dinner and he ran off and rolled in fox poo. Everyone was inside enjoying themselves while I was outside in my nice dress and wellies with the hose pipe, shampooing stinky poo off the dog.

Sidebeforeself · 12/10/2026 08:05

OP your examples aren’t funny though..

Bikergran · 12/10/2026 08:15

Well.......one year the turkey was too big for the oven and we had to bash it flatter with a rolling pin to get it to fit.

Another year the dining-room light fitting blew up on Christmas morning and my husband had to rewire it before lunch.

One memorable, but good Christmas? The first year I was without my children after my divorce I couldn't face a "family" Christmas and went to an unconventional friend, where we had lamb stew and packet cheesecake, and a lot of laughs.

Itwasloveactually · 12/10/2026 08:25

I found out my husband was having an affair with his office assistant on Christmas Day.

I met him for Christmas shopping a few days before and we separated so we could buy each other’s presents. I spotted him skulking around the jewellery counter in my favourite department store. he hid the present in his jacket.

when we got home I couldn’t resist sneaking a look, it was a beautiful necklace is a big square box , I was so excited for Christmas Day!

when Christmas Day arrives I said let’s pick one present each before heading out, I obviously picked the ‘’necklace’

it wasn’t the necklace, it was a Joni Mitchell CD. I cried.

randomchap · 12/10/2026 08:26

No need to shout

Fifthtimelucky · 12/10/2026 08:29

I was about 12 and I had spread all my presents out on the floor so that I could admire them. I then stood on my brand new watch and smashed it.

This was the 1970s and the spread of presents would have been very modest in today’s terms, so it was very upsetting to break my main present on day one.

Thinking back, I find it difficult to understand how I could have broken it as I wouldn’t have been wearing shoes (slippers probably) and I wouldn’t have been very heavy. I imagine it was only a cheap watch, but even so!

I remember the year of Challenge Anneka

My mother is a narcissist and loves to ruin any special occasion (im the scapegoat and to blame for everything)

She'd sat in her chair all day, moaning that her arm had gone numb and that she was in terrible pain

When that failed to get enough sympathy, she started watching that programme (she may have taped it on her vhs player,i dont know if it was aired on the day)

Anneka was sorting out an orphanage (back in 1990) and had done a bloody good job-we where playing on the floor with our toys

About halfway through,my mother got more and more wound up and just blew up

'DO YOU KNOW HOW LUCKY YOU ARE YOU LITTLE BASTARDS!THESE CHILDREN HAVE NOTHING,YOU HAVE EVERYTHING AND YOUR NOT EVEN BOTHERED THAT THOSE KIDS HAVE NOTHING!'

Ended with our new toys broken all over the floor and us crying our eyes out (and getting the blame as 'you don't know how hard i worked to buy you those toys!')

There was nothing wrong with her arm but for maximum sympathy, she managed to buy a neck brace and spent the next 8 weeks wandering around wearing it,whole claiming she'd pulled a muscle and trapped a nerve and that we'd been really 'unsupportive'

The next worst Christmas was many years later when I had dc of my own

We where not allowed to go and spend Christmas with her (this was for 'family only' so brothers and their girlfriends where invited but not their own daughter and grandchildren)

We where summoned on boxing day to come for cheese and biscuits (I don't like cheese) but we 'had' to go

I walked in and everyone kept looking at me and I could tell they'd been talking about me

I went to pick up a butter knife and all hell broke loose

My mother had locked the doors and hidden my bag (which had my phone in it) and everyone started screaming, chasing me around the house with a sharp knife, punching me (in front of the kids) and threating to kill me

My kids are screaming they are being screamed at to 'shut up' and my stoner/druggie brother is sat in the middle of this, looking like shaggy from scooby doo and scoffing blocks of cheese

I managed to break a window, which got the attention of a passer-by who phoned the police and they got us out of there and back home

She tried to bill me for the broken window but I threatened to press charges and she dropped it

She told everyone I'd attacked her so I got abuse from her friends (no point explaining as nobody would believe me) but my friends did believe me and had a go at her which made her worse

I'd gone nc by the following Christmas and took the kids to maccies on boxing day as a rare treat

She found out and went mental because Christmas is 'family time' and I should have dropped the dc off at hers (with the same people who had attacked me) so she could play 'granny of the year' (she hadn't been in touch,I was meant to have dumped them on her doorstep and walked off)

She was told to 'fuck off you abusive bitch' by my friends which made her worse and she really painted herself as the victim

Since I went nc,Christmas is spent with people who love me and wouldn't dream of hurting me

My dog found my DIL’s Christmas cake and started to eat it. This was a cake lovingly made weeks ago, brandied, marzipaned, iced and brilliantly decorated.

I was completely mortified. My DIL was really lovely about it. My family laugh about it now but I still feel awful about it.

x2boys · 12/10/2026 09:53

Well.it wasent very funny but i was induced on xmas day 20 years ago, my xmas lunch was sausage and chips in the hospital canteen, i was in active labour for xmas day evening/ night and ds1 was born at 5.50 am Boxing day.

Soddingcat · 12/10/2026 09:55

I don't really have anything of interest to tell,
I think probably the one that caused the most upset was along time ago, 2 of my older brothers and their families came to stay with my parents, one has 3 DC, and one has 1 , The 3 DC families do a few very modest Christmas presents for their children , and the DB, wife of the other family did a huge pile for their 1 son, more than the entire pile for the other 3 children in total,
and arranged it all beautifully, and they were told that they would have to remove some, and give them in their room so as not to upset the other family .

This did not go down well …

Are you sure you didn’t find out on Christmas Eve, just before watching your kids in the local Christmas concert? Didn’t your daughter play First Lobster?
