I always really enjoy the (light hearted) threads around Christmas , especially afterwards.
The ones where the poster got one roastie and hardly any gravy , or got the present back they gave to someone last year ,the inlaws who refuse to put the heating on, or have it so hot you want to pass out ,
Please share !!

Are you sure you didn’t find out on Christmas Eve, just before watching your kids in the local Christmas concert? Didn’t your daughter play First Lobster?

Edited

Ooops, busted!! I thought I’d altered details enough not to be identified 😭

Morning, everyone. We've moved this thread over to the Christmas section. It felt a bit early and wasn't really and AIBU either.

Thewonderfuldollypartonsbra · 12/10/2026 11:09

The year everything I got had to go back

Every single present I got,had to be returned as nothing worked

It was pure crap luck rather than me breaking stuff but I was gutted as I had no presents on the day (my first cd player refused to work and it went downhill from there)

No fun for my mother either as she didn't drive so had to go into town many times over the next few days to return it all for replacements (thankfully I was a bit older so not as many presents as if I'd been a lot younger)

I remember trying to put a brave face on as she would have gone mental if I'd got upset

I can laugh about it now-the only present that did work was my copy of 'Charlotte's web' on vhs tape and I didn't give a stuff about a pig and a dead spider (at the time-i read the book years later and loved it)

My mum burnt to roast potatoes, they were so crunchy my grandma but into them and the top denture broke and the whole thing fell out on her plate.

A 7 hour power cut that started late morning.
We ended up cooking pasta for Christmas lunch, on a camping stove in the garden. Luckily for us, we're veggie, but we felt sorry for all the neighbours who already had the turkey in the oven and all the veg peeled...

One year i took the dog for a walk after Christmas dinner and he went rolling in pig shit. When i got home the water had gone off so i couldn't wash the dog.

sherbetlemonade · 12/10/2026 23:32

I remember one year when our then toddler dd pulled the oven knob straight off the front of the gas cooker and broke it on the afternoon of Christmas Eve, rendering the oven useless. DH had a mad drive round trying to find a place that sold cookers, and had to buy the only one that the shop actually had in stock, about 5 minutes before the place closed.

My dog found my DIL’s Christmas cake and started to eat it. This was a cake lovingly made weeks ago, brandied, marzipaned, iced and brilliantly decorated.

I was completely mortified. My DIL was really lovely about it. My family laugh about it now but I still feel awful about it.

FWIW if a dog eats a Christmas cake it’s best to take it to the vet as currants and raisins and dried fruit can be poisonous to dogs.

Went round the relatives houses in the morning and got a bit too tipsy to cook. Ended up with pizza on Christmas day, had the Christmas dinner on the 26th instead 🤣

Well.it wasent very funny but i was induced on xmas day 20 years ago, my xmas lunch was sausage and chips in the hospital canteen, i was in active labour for xmas day evening/ night and ds1 was born at 5.50 am Boxing day.

Ah, I also spent from Christmas Eve 2005 to Boxing Day evening in Labour. DD1 was born st half past six. During the Labour I managed to beat everyone at Monopoly, eat Christmas dinner attached to my TENs machine and drop a mug into the bathroom sink during a particularly painful contraction, somehow managing to smash a huge crack in the sink, (but the mug was unscathed). We couldn’t afford to fix the sink for bloody months.
DD1 hates her Boxing Day birthday and wishes she had arrived on her due date (which was Christmas Eve as at least everyone is still excited for Christmas, everything is open and people aren’t hungover/bilious from overeating the day before or stuck seeing the family they didn’t see on Christmas Day so not free to see her on her birthday). This has now been compounded because my now DH (her stepdad) also has his birthday on Boxing Day and feels similarly about it so they are both grumpy birthday-ers together!

How on earth did you manage to get it installed in time?

When DS was only a toddler I was hospitalised from 18th -24 th Dec with serious gastric problems. Both sets of DP's were away for Xmas. DS's presents had been bought and wrapped already but nothing else had been done and I was still in pain and on a very soft diet plus build up drinks. I sent DH out to get Xmas food and he panic bought the Christmas aisle on Iceland. - it was all party food so sent him to M&S - bugger all left so he got biscuits.

Xmas dinner was a picnic of party food on the floor in front of the TV while I lay on the sofa with my Complan . Funnily enough DS raved about that Christmas!

There was the year my mum brought the turkey to the table and then discovered the giblets were still inside.

My Nana would remind my Mum of this every year.

Then there was the year my Mum put the turkey to defrost in the washing room and the can had a lovely turkey dinner. The turkey came to the table already carved that year. My Nana reminded my Mum of the year she had cooked the turkey, again.

Coming up to Xmas I was 'helping' my Mum cooking, she was making a trifle and kept pouring herself, and me some sherry and saying, "cook's tips", I have no idea how many were poured and drunk but the house we lived in then we only lived in from me being 7 to me being 9.

ILoveKits · 13/10/2026 08:15

The only year DS never had any presents.

My waters broke at 8pm on Christmas Eve; DS arrived not long after midnight on Chrstmas day. With hindsight, I looked back and realised I'd been uncomfortable for a day or two but thought it was because I'd been rushing around getting ready for Christmas and cleaned the house from top to bottom the day before.

The baby was due third week of January. He was the best present ever though.

The following Christmas my mum proudly gave us a bauble with his name and "Baby's first Christmas" on it. We laugh about it every year, duh mum, it was his second Christmas!

A carpenter friend of mine once got a frantic phone call from a neighbour in the early hours of Christmas Day — they’d been assembling some complicated toy for one of their young children till about 3 am, had arranged all the presents under the tree and tiptoed out of the living room, only for the door to somehow jam or lock itself behind them so that it couldn’t be reopened, locking all the children’s presents inside with no other means of access. Carpenter friend is a saint and went and took the door off its hinges in total silence so the four and six year old got to come downstairs as usual to the tree.

Those kids are now in their 20s and I think he still features in their family mythology as kind of like Mr Edwards in Little House on the Prairie!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/10/2026 08:57

Years ago now, but I once had so much Buck’s Fizz I completely forgot about the roast potatoes - they weren’t even parboiled - so instead of dinner at around 3, it was more like 5 pm. (The turkey kept hot perfectly well, cocooned in foil and tea towels.).

However everyone was that much more ready for it, so we’ve had 🎄dinner at 5.30-6 ever since. Any young Gdcs who’ve arrived since then, will have some sort of simple lunch at their usual time.

I found out my husband was having an affair with his office assistant on Christmas Day.

I met him for Christmas shopping a few days before and we separated so we could buy each other’s presents. I spotted him skulking around the jewellery counter in my favourite department store. he hid the present in his jacket.

when we got home I couldn’t resist sneaking a look, it was a beautiful necklace is a big square box , I was so excited for Christmas Day!

when Christmas Day arrives I said let’s pick one present each before heading out, I obviously picked the ‘’necklace’

it wasn’t the necklace, it was a Joni Mitchell CD. I cried.

I don't know what you were expecting after that year when he got you a fancy bowling ball engraved with his name!

Perfect timing for gathering material for an article in the media pre Xmas. What publication are you writing for OP?

These type of comments seems from a bygone era, it's 2026 and print media is dead. I can't remember the last time I read a light entertainment article like along these lines, are there really still journalists doing this type of thing?

SidmyCat · 13/10/2026 10:15

Long time ago as I was very young but our chimney caught fire on Christmas morning. Neighbours called the fire brigade but didn't tell us. I remember the firemen did seem to fill the room but they all stayed for a drink.

How on earth did you manage to get it installed in time?

It was a standalone gas cooker in the days when the connector was a sort of push-fit thing, like a hosepipe. DH switched the supply off, disconnected the old one, plugged in the new one and Bob's your Uncle.

Mygreyhair · 13/10/2026 10:33

I had my fourth child, planned home birth. Due in January - turned up on Christmas morning. I was so excited I forgot to put the veg on for dinner so the kids ate turkey and roasties! Midwife told me she’d pop back in the afternoon but I told her I wouldn’t be in cos I was going to mum’s for tea 😂

Odditea · 13/10/2026 11:14

I found out my husband’s best friend fancied me on Christmas Day. I’d had the odd suspicion after he was a bit weird around me at the wedding but then it all came to a head when he just popped over out of the blue to tell me. I had to lie to my DH and tell him I was speaking to carollers when really I was outside while friend was spilling his guts to me (he’d written these all down on these big signs so DH wouldn’t hear, the sneaky fucker). It was fucking weird and creepy and now I can’t be in the same room as him. I still haven’t told DH because I don’t want to break his heart, but like what the fuck do I do with this?

Sometimesitsmyownfault · 13/10/2026 12:32

I stored our massive turkey on a bench in a cart lodge as it was way too big for the fridge and the kitchen was too warm. The night of Christmas Eve, one of my dogs wouldn’t come in at bed time. It was because he was busy nom-nom-noming off the parsons nose!
