I always really enjoy the (light hearted) threads around Christmas , especially afterwards.
The ones where the poster got one roastie and hardly any gravy , or got the present back they gave to someone last year ,the inlaws who refuse to put the heating on, or have it so hot you want to pass out ,
Please share !!

These type of comments seems from a bygone era, it's 2026 and print media is dead. I can't remember the last time I read a light entertainment article like along these lines, are there really still journalists doing this type of thing?

Its not for print its for click bait article where they litrally just copy the post word for word, I can't open Facebook without being deluged by them.

Half of mumsnet post ends up on my facebook feed as 'news'.

Remember when facebook was seeing what your friends/family where up too? now its pretty much only news articles and adverts.

This was actually Christmas Eve. My mums very good friend who lived a few doors down had bought mum a stone donkey for the garden (one of those that has a hole in the back for planting flowers). I think it must have been delivered by the garden centre and she hadnt realised how heavy it was. Her BIL and her son dragged it round and left it outside our front porch.

My sister and I (we would have been around 8 and 10) decided to try and get it indoors and slide it under the Christmas tree. But when we tried to lift it, it weighed a ton and it tipped over and the donkeys head broke off.

We were so upset as trying to do something nice for mum and had broken her present. We asked our dad for help (he was usually a bit useless but stepped up) he found some cement/grout in the shed, reapplied the head and hid donkey until the next day, behind the Christmas tree, disguised with Tesco carrier bag over it's repaired head. They still have the donkey in the garden to this day - the grout is holding firm!

I realise now that there was no way mum did not realise the goings-on but kept quiet as we sweetly tried to solve the problem! When I hear Little Donkey sung by kids in church at Christmas I always think at least his head didn't fall off.

It was actually on 🎄Eve. Sister and niece were over from the US, and I was due to collect them and DM on 🎄Eve afternoon. However my sister phoned earlier to say that DM, who then had fairly early Alzheimer’s, , said she’d really rather stay at home, peace and quiet, no fuss.

OK, if that was what she wanted. So I took her presents and some nice food, drove 60 miles each way to collect sister and niece.

Later that evening, with everyone else out, Dm phoned me, absolutely furiously angry! What was she doing all on her own on Christmas Eve? I was the worst daughter in the world, she was cutting me out of her will! etc. etc.

It was no use telling her that OF COURSE she’d been invited - she had changed her mind at the last minute about coming! She simply couldn’t remember any of it. Ranted on and on about how awful I was…
I said that if she’d changed her mind about coming, I’d drive down now, to collect her.
No, she didn’t want that either! Furiously rejected the offer, hung up.

I was so upset, was in tears for ages.

Phoned her on Christmas Day - on tenterhooks! - but she’d already completely forgotten the whole thing. Talk about phew!

Alzheimer’s is a bastard!

In my teens my brother was sent to the garden centre (about 100m away). He came back with the biggest tree you could get in to a house.

It had to be put in a corner leaning on the wall, it was too tall to go upright.

To decorate it we stood and threw baubles at it.

After Xmas bro had to take it out side, It took about 6 months to get rid of the needles.

After being attacked by my family on boxing day,if gone nc with them

The following year,I had spent to a very tight budget (skint single parent)

The kids where at that age where they got a small amount of pocket money and nothing else (which was spent on sweets and other tat, which is what kids should spend their money on)

I spent that year with no presents at all-not even a small present to unwrap

I remember crying my eyes out in the toilet that nobody cared about me enough to buy me a small gift and having to come out with a brave face on

My narc mother found out just after Christmas and thought this was hilarious

The following year they clubbed together and bought me a small box of chocs which was the best present ever

My two year-old daughter helped clear the table after Christmas dinner. However what no-one noticed was that her help included drinking the wine left in people's glasses and it wasnt until she came into the room sat down heavily on her bum and giggled uncontrollably that we realised. I sent the rest of the afternoon.mainv sure she drank plenty of water and changing her subsequent wet nappies. The odd thing is that now shes an adult she doesn't drink.
