Wrapping the front door like a Christmas present

Does anyone do this?

I've seen several white doors with red "ribbon" that look like a St George flag. Also seen some that look like Jesus's cross 🙈

I don't like them personally in the same way as I don't like covered chairs at weddings.

There's maybe 5 doors that have this done in the town I live in. I think it looks really good on some doors. It would look shit on our front door.

Motherearthisbusy · 27/12/2025 12:07

I think they are quite fun. I like anyone who makes an effort at Christmas it’s the people who do nothing that I wonder about

I don't think an unwrapped front door equals not doing anything.

I’ve only seen a couple of doors decorated like this. I know that they aren’t always popular with postmen/women etc, as they sometimes cover the letter box.

I think, done correctly, they can look lovely.

Alpacajigsaw · 27/12/2025 12:09

I think they look naff and are also quite passe around here, there have been quite a lot of these in recent years but I’ve only seen one house with it this year. It must be annoying for people who have to post things through the letterbox.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 27/12/2025 12:11

It rains a lot here and they get soggy and bedraggled unless you have a porch, in which case nobody can really see it. And my postie says they're a pain in the arse as there's always something obscuring the letterbox, which can often be hard enough to find in the first place!

WhatNoRaisins · 27/12/2025 12:11

It's not my thing but I remember they used to be quite popular here. Some of the shops still do them.

I didn’t mean that specifically. Sorry I forgot on mumsnet you have to specifically state what you mean. I meant decoration in general.

And yes some people might be having all kinds of problems as to why they don’t decorate I just mean the people who can’t be fucked, for no other reason than laziness, to decorate.

ZenLikeAlways · 27/12/2025 12:13

I think they look super tacky.

Theraffarian · 27/12/2025 12:21

I think they are out of popularity around this way , they had a surge 2 or 3 years ago , but only saw one this year . Mind you I’d take that over giant inflatable things in the garden any day !

Motherearthisbusy · 27/12/2025 12:32

Those giant inflatables look horrible, however, the joy they bring the little kids are probably worth the eye sore!

MySilentLions · 27/12/2025 12:34

Very tacky. Not seen any this year after a couple of years of lots of them.

I am one of these people. I just cannot be arsed with all of this nonsense when people are homeless and sleeping on the streets. I'd rather do my usual volunteering at Christmas than waste money on crap like this.

MrsKeats · 27/12/2025 12:37

Common as muck as my Nan would say 😂

Don’t see the connection between putting up a bit of tinsel and people being homeless but ok. Life is what you make it and all that, if you think it’s all crap and nonsense then you’d never celebrate anything.
Admire your volunteering though.

Then you would wonder about me! I don't (and neither does anyone on my street) put up any external decorations because in the area I live in they would be stolen or vandalised in a matter of minutes. Decorations are for indoors only

Ahh in that case it makes sense. I thought you was just being a grinch. I take it back.

QueenAstrid · 27/12/2025 12:53

I think they look really naff. Give me a traditional wreath any day.

I think they are horrible too but seeing the delight and wonder on my friend's four year old's face when we encountered a garden crammed with them while out on a walk was lovely. Her face lit up and she was thrilled

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 27/12/2025 12:57

A fresh wreath on the front door is the extent of my outdoor decor.

I'm not a fan of the big bows, inflatables, or National Lampoon style lighting displays. A couple of local households do huge garden displays every year. They are tacky as hell but have raised thousands for a local hospice, I take my hat off to them for that.

Just two of us this Christmas. Had a lovely time without decorations in the sitting room.
Family coming tomorrow, have put some their room.

There's a massive inflatable Grinch outside our neighbours' house.

You can’t think of any reasons why people can’t be bothered…?

Whosthetabbynow · 27/12/2025 13:08

If I had a massive fancy house I’d light it up with beautiful warm white lights, but I haven’t so I don’t. If I had a good eye for a decorated front door I’d do it, but I don’t

Do I have to honestly state the obvious exceptions?
