Irritated by parents already😩

I am an awful person. My parents are staying for Christmas - only arrived today - and I am already irritated.

The constant passive aggressive questions - the long, boring stories about people I don’t know - the complete lack of interest in my life

All my Electrical appliances have been unplugged so the remote controls no longer work. I will have to crawl under the Christmas trees now to turn them back on (don’t know how my dad managed to get under there, he is 80!).

the TV is up so loud I can’t think. They brought the contents of their fridge with them - I had to put most of it in the bin!

my mum keeps asking me are we having (fill in some obscure food item she never mentioned before) then looking disappointed when I say I didn’t know she wanted it. I went to Tesco to try and find Turkish delight with no chocolate because apparently it just isn’t Christmas without it.

i am already so irritated I could scream. They are elderly. They can’t help it. But in fairness they have always been a bit annoying, they have just lost their filter.

I am trying to find it funny. But failing. Every time I move my dad asks me what I am doing. Where I am going. Aggghhhh

Why isnitbthqt so many people do get more difficult as they get older? We wouldn't tolerate kids or teens acting like this so why do the elderly get a free pass just because theyre old?

I wonder if it's because a lot of us were bought up with the respect your elders/do as I say not as I do approach.
I know I find it incredibly hard to challenge/stand up for myself with my parents due to how.
My mum, in particular, was very much of the children should be seen & not heard mentality (if fact, I think not seen & not heard was probably more accurate!).

LouiseK93 · 27/12/2025 15:04

Hmm...annoying people do get old. Very irritating.

FictionalCharacter · 26/12/2025 20:35

Your parents are terrible guests, interfere with things in your home, treated you badly when you were growing up, and your mum puts you down. You are absolutely not a bad person to not be thrilled with their company.

Yes - the things OP describes are not just a few annoying/endearing quirks, they are serious. Your parents are lucky to have you OP - you sound a much nicer person than they are.

CRD67 · 27/12/2025 17:29

You're right. Eating disorders are nothing to be scoffed at!

BlueLegume · 27/12/2025 18:14

@CRD67 Assuming you are genuine. Eating disorders amongst my mother’s generation were rife. She had one. I had one. Being ‘thin as a pin’ was the ultimate goal. Karen Carpenter Social Contagion. Being fat was lazy.

My mother is mid eighties now. She has always been obsessed with being thin. It doesn’t go away. It is control. My sibling messaged me a few years back saying Mum is constipated. When I told him there would be laxatives in the cupboard and garage he asked why. Well “DB your mother has an eating disorder’.

Wonder how you’ll feel once they have died…

Having read all of these posts this morning OP, I think you are far from being an awful person and I bet your parents wouldn’t look at their own behaviour and have any misgivings about how they behave towards you. I think you have the patience of a saint and I’m not sure I would be able to host my parents for a week if they were like that. All credit to you for holding your tongue on no doubt multiple occasions!

🤗Immensely well said, sincere soul, I think she's got the patience of an absolute saint too💚🤗💚

RTFT. Or at the very least, the OP’s comments. It is incredibly arrogant to waltz in after 500+ posts and drop something like this, as if no one else may have made the point previously and it have been thoroughly dicussed as utterly irrelevant.

As a summary on this aspect it is possible to miss them when they are dead and still find their behaviour in life utterly infuriating.

You'll have to read OP's posts to understand the wider context.

Sad but relieved, in my case. Not everyone has a Waltons type relationship with family. Its perfectly normal to be able to care for people as well as finding them incredibly irritating, and not enjoy being with them.

Caught up on OPs posts. Wow!! I don’t know how you do it @BellyblueboyI think I’d have gone loopy!! I couldn’t stand someone turning all my stuff off and rearranging my cupboards!! So rude!!

Yes completely concur with you 🤗
Honestly believe original commenter is one of the most compassionate kind caring, empathetic & patient souls 🥰
My father does this, moving our belongings & precious items around
Even throws precious items away which were within our wardrobes, sets of drawers, etc - Tucked away not on view - But God help you if you dared go anywhere near his belongings
Yes, some just seem to think it's ok to overstep boundaries & that unacceptable behaviour is acceptable
Sad fact I'm afraid 💚🫂💚

Is it only okay to grumble about family members if you think they will outlive you? If I had a life limiting illness would it be okay to find them irritating?

mumsnet is full of people complaint about relatives - you must be busy commenting this on every thread.

hope you had a lovely Christmas 🎄

Ignore them.

You can love your family dearly and still find them crazily irritating. I couldn’t handle having mine to stay!!! A day is plenty.

honestly you deserve a medal.

I can’t believe someone would feel relieved at fhe death of the people who brought them into this world. You owe them your life.

Firstly i have no idea what the acronym means and I don’t care enough to take the time to google it.

Secondly, do you think I ought to have wasted my life reading those 500 comments? I need to undertake a thorough and comprehensive review of comments before adding my own contribution? Erm ok

You can’t believe it? Even though you must know perfectly well that there are parents out there who abuse their own children?

You have just proven beyond doubt that your “contribution” is worthless.

You can just read the OPs comments - that’s quicker. Then you get the whole story and can see a summary of what has been posted.

Most people are not abused by their own parents. Many people, however, treat their parents very badly. Then when they die, they’re full of remorse. I see it all the time. They realise they were lacking maturity and were ungrateful. When they have their own children, they begin to realise what it is to be a parent and feel terrible they didn’t treat their own parents better.

While I won’t feel relieved if I am about when my parents die - I have sufficient intelligence, life experience and imagination to understand why some people would feel relieved when their parents die.

I can only assume you have led a very sheltered and limited life. It must be wonderful to sail through life oblivious to the reality of this world.

Although please never work with children or vulnerable adults - you would be awful in a safeguarding capacity.

I find that hard to believe.
And I feel no remorse for my father's death. That comes from maturity and protecting my children from him.
I think you are only here to goad though. That or you are embarrassed that you got it so wrong, so are trying to double down and just making yourself look even sillier.

Maybe it isn’t. But I’m not the one with bizarre logic. You airily declare that you’re not going to waste your time reading previous posts - yet apparently your post is absolutely essential? Why isn’t your post a waste of time?

Actually you suggested I should have read all “500 posts”. I haven’t read other people’s posts in full because why would I? I responded to the poster’s post and I read all of their posts. You then declared that’s not sufficient for my post to be valid. I’m just wondering why you feel that way and why I haven’t met your posting standards.
