Hi
How long has everyone got off work for Christmas? I'm a stay at home mum but my husband finishes on the 23rd and goes back the 5th January

OP posts:
LBOCS2 · 14/12/2025 22:17

Finish on the 19th, back on the 5th, have taken 3 days as leave (22nd, 23rd, 2nd) and the company is closed for the rest of the time. We have whole company targets set in the last third of the year and the carrot for achieving various of those is Christmas shut down days. Unsurprisingly it’s a very effective motivator!

Finish Thursday 18th with the kids and back Tuesday 6th, also with the kids. So im pleased but also annoyed I dont have one day without them (3 kids under 8 here!) Exhausted but pushing through 💪 have a lovely christmas everyone xx

I forget how much time people get off. Is it AL or does your work close down for 2 weeks?
I've ill health retired now but we didnt get anytime over Xmas or new year (worked 33 years in the same place). Not allowed to take AL over that period. Worked for Children's services.

I'm civil service and we've got 24th and 29th as privilege days this year so that's given a nice run without using leave.

Finish on the 19th Dec Back 5th Jan - Self employed Driving Instructor.

Silverblue1985 · 14/12/2025 22:30

Finish 17.30 on 24th, back on 5th. Don’t need to take any a/l - first place I’ve worked at where this was the case, others never closed and I always had to provide cover on some of the days so wasn’t allowed to take a/l for the whole period. I remember one New Year’s Eve where the CEO came to me at gone 5pm with a problem that could have easily been solved in early January without any impact, but insisted it needs fixing that day. I was not a happy bunny - neither was the security guard in the office building who couldn’t leave as we were still working, all other companies sent their staff home at midday.

My partner- nothing, he works shifts and is on lates all Christmas week. Downside of a job that does actually included a lot of time off so have to accept that and work round it.

Me- work 2 very part time jobs- job 1 is only one day a week and I have 2 weeks off as person doesn’t want support over Christmas. Job 2 (2 evenings a week) still working Christmas week just slightly different days to avoid bank holidays.

xmasstress12 · 14/12/2025 22:33

I have 2 wks off,DH has 1 wk.

Teenytwo · 14/12/2025 22:34

7 months, but I’m on maternity leave.

Kickinthenostalgia · 14/12/2025 22:39

According to my rota from 25th - 28th back 29th but if all goes according to plan I may get 24th off… but there’s also a chance I may have to work the 27th.. I work in retail in the delivery/warehouse. Sometimes we get surprise delivery’s. I also should have 31st - 2nd Jan also but I most likely will get called in 😂

TricNorthCarolina · 14/12/2025 22:55

Public sector- just have the bank holidays off.

I’m the same as your husband :)

Missreginafalange · 14/12/2025 22:57

Finish on the 19th Dec and back on the 5th Jan. office closed on Christmas Eve at lunchtime and reopens on the 5th we are very lucky and don’t have to use our annual leave for the closed period like I did at a previous place.

CissOff · 14/12/2025 23:00

Finish on Friday and go back on the 2nd Jan. Prefer the run up than the after so this is perfect for me.

Cat1504 · 14/12/2025 23:01

Don’t like to waste Annual leave over Christmas….so not taking any ….22/23 NWDs….in 24th but WFH…..the following week 29/30 NWDs …..31st and 2nd will WFH

cadburyegg · 14/12/2025 23:02

I finish on the 18th Dec, back on the 5th Jan. I have a long break this time due to a combination of taking annual leave because children are off school, I don’t work Fridays, and it’s mandated where I work that we take annual leave between Christmas and NY.

Dutchhouse14 · 14/12/2025 23:03

Christmas leave was very contentious at my work this year.
I have from 23 Dec-1st Jan off, would have like a full 2 weeks still cant really grumble.
Next xmas i will have go into work other than bank holidays so need to make the most of this year.

WorthySloth · 14/12/2025 23:06

Finish at 8pm Christmas Eve back in at 8am Boxing Day for a 24 hour stint 🤣🤣

BebbanburgIsMine · 14/12/2025 23:09

I don’t work now due to health issues but in one job I got Christmas Day off and that was it, they wouldn’t give me a day off in the week, because that year Christmas was on my day off.

Same at New Year, Friday was my day off anyway, I should have got an extra day for the 2nd of January, (Scotland) but I didn’t.

Redwinedaze · 14/12/2025 23:24

Just Christmas Day.

StepAwayFromMyCrutches · 14/12/2025 23:26

Finished already. On medical leave plus annual since last week. Back on 5th.

NoMumLeftBehindLiz · 14/12/2025 23:28

Don’t all hate me for this but I seem to have fallen between the gaps at work and am on nobody’s holiday system. We don’t have a HR team so each department head has their own holiday monitoring system but I don’t sit in any of those departments somehow and my official manager actually works for a different company (it’s complicated). So it means nobody is monitoring how much holiday I take. I don’t know how long this will last and I’m trying to be sensible and not take the piss. But I’m taking a BIG Christmas holiday.

Lucky devil. I'm disabled and cannot work (and in any case, draw my pension next month) my dp works in a well known garage. He's got Christmas day, boxing day, and new years day, and that's it, unless he uses up holiday. Does seem rather rubbing it in when you say yours has got all that time off 🤷🏻‍♀️

plominoagain · 15/12/2025 00:41

None , but that’s the emergency services for you .

My daughter once asked me if I could have the whole of Christmas ( so Xmas eve, day and Boxing Day ) off once . She was 6 . It took until I broke my leg at work when she was 15, to achieve it .

Whichone2024 · 15/12/2025 00:42

December 19 to January 8th
