IF you do a special breakfast for today, what do you have? My kids are teens but we have our friends children staying with us at the moment who are younger, due to a family emergency, and they cheered up when we mentioned we could do this.

We are having,

🎄 Pancakes shaped like snowmen, Xmas trees and Rudolf with smarties, chocolate chips, strawberries and blueberries for decoration

🎄 Snowman crumpets

🎄 Grapes and blueberries made into a Christmas tree

🎄 Banana and strawberries made into candy canes

🎄 Milk in bottles decorated to look like snowmen

🎄 Hot chocolate and marshmallows

🎄 Chocolate coins

🎄 Advent calendars (chocolate and Lego)

I decorated the dining table late last night so it looks very festive for them and our friends children’s elves are with us!

Just wondering what you’re doing because I’m nosy and maybe I can steal some ideas.

People are having FUN with their children. Some people get pleasure out of watching their children enjoying themselves and are even willing to put in a bit of expense, planning and work. Strangely enough, men are also able to fry a pancake or toast a crumpet and many do- nowhere does OP specify her gender.

OP didn't say you had to. You can be as puritanical as you like with your own kids and they can have 30g of All Bran and not a flake more every morning, 365 days a year. Or you can completely eliminate any of the work and joy involved in having children by not having children.

Just because people aren't "treating" their kids to a sugar buffet before they go to school doesn't mean they are punishing them with a diet of gruel and water.

HayceeDeeCee · 01/12/2025 12:33

What a lovely thing to do, if it was the weekend I might do something nice if I had the grandkids with me. It's these sort of things children remember when all the 'stuff' is forgotten.

I always take my family out for an Xmas eve lunch at the pub, it's become a bit of a tradition now, we all look forward to it, the little ones are excited for the next day.

Right, well, I have had more than enough of the joyless, not bothered to read ALL of OPs posts, killjoys.

Some people have too much too much time on their hands! It’s a regular Monday morning OP.. what on earth are you fussing about? We get the advent calendars out and get on with our day.

Did you read the OP? I don’t think it’s a regular Monday morning for the children involved!

What the fuck is more important to do woth our time that having a fum special moment with our (or our friends) children?

What are we suppose to do? Be a miserable git who piss on everyone's parade but has time to go on Mumnset??

I think people should feel pleased with themselves for not being suckered into spending even more money on rituals that have been made up by commercial ventures specifically to relieve us of our hard-earned and rapidly dwindling cash. As if all the spending on Christmas isn't bad enough as it is they have to try to drain every last penny from us over the whole season, which now lasts from September to January 1st. And as soon as that is over they're advertising Valentines Eggs (Valentine's and Easter for sale in the same aisle).

Then feel pleased with yourself, that you do not have children going through a traumatic event and you’ve chosen this specific way to cheer them up. its great you didn’t let the shops push out into buying fruit and making pancakes
you don’t have to shit on someone else though.

slughater · 01/12/2025 12:42

OP I must say I scoffed mightily at the idea of a special december 1st breakfast and even more so when I read the menu but I have reverse scoffed since reading about the family you are helping- well done you and your kids and I hope things improve for the family and wishing you all strength to bear whatever it is xx

Hmm.. what else could 90%+ of the world be doing on a standard Monday morning? Going to work and getting the kids out the door + ready for school perhaps? I have plenty of time for fun, special moments and treats. 8am isn’t that time.

TB23 · 01/12/2025 12:44

I am genuinely interested where this is a tradition. Thanks for the North Pole breakfast. I have lived in 4 countries and have never heard of this. I assume it's just a Christmas themed breakfast, but doing it on s school day is old to me. There also seem to have been more than enough ideas already.

notallwhowanderare · 01/12/2025 12:46

Have lived in Scotland, England, America and Australia, mixed with many cultures and ethnicities, and have absolutely never heard of this idea.

RoamingToaster · 01/12/2025 12:47

@ChristmasHasCome Sorry you feel attacked. It seems more people are in support of you than not.

No one said you should do it. I don’t get the defensiveness and meanness in lots of posts.

@HewasH2O someone else up thread posted a pic of theirs, def planning to do them! Hope is ok to repost.

I like the candy cane as fruit. I’ve never seen that before 😄

Nevernonono · 01/12/2025 12:51

Nutmuncher · 01/12/2025 12:12

Bizarre, why anyone would need tondo this is beyond me.

Bizarre, that someone wants to be kind to children that are currently away from home and sad?

More bizarre is the need to comment on such a snarky manner,

But each to their own, although I’d much rather have the OPs attitude TBH.

Children weren’t going to school, it says that in the OP!

Well I'm sure we all make joy in our own way.

One sugary breakfast a year will not ruin their education.

canuckup · 01/12/2025 12:58

What?!?

Along with the Xmas eve boxes, elf causing mischief, now this???

I have never in my life heard of a special breakfast for 1 December? On a school day as well? Is this a US thing? 1 December means opening of first door of advent calendar, that's it.

Just cos you haven't heard of it doesn't mean it came from America. My mum was doing it in the 1980s and she is welsh!

What should we be doing instead - pissing on people’s chips?

notallwhowanderare · 01/12/2025 12:58

So?

Well, what’s your point? That you haven’t heard of it? Why is that even remotely relevant?

Nevernonono · 01/12/2025 13:02

notallwhowanderare · 01/12/2025 12:58

So?

So just because you haven’t heard of it, doesn’t mean it’s not a thing.

And now you have heard of it, so issue resolved!
