IF you do a special breakfast for today, what do you have? My kids are teens but we have our friends children staying with us at the moment who are younger, due to a family emergency, and they cheered up when we mentioned we could do this.

We are having,

🎄 Pancakes shaped like snowmen, Xmas trees and Rudolf with smarties, chocolate chips, strawberries and blueberries for decoration

🎄 Snowman crumpets

🎄 Grapes and blueberries made into a Christmas tree

🎄 Banana and strawberries made into candy canes

🎄 Milk in bottles decorated to look like snowmen

🎄 Hot chocolate and marshmallows

🎄 Chocolate coins

🎄 Advent calendars (chocolate and Lego)

I decorated the dining table late last night so it looks very festive for them and our friends children’s elves are with us!

Just wondering what you’re doing because I’m nosy and maybe I can steal some ideas.

This surely isn’t a thing??

ODFOD.
and maybe read the OP?

Yeap someone bragging about how amazing their advent is. An advent breakfast that is a tradition most of us can do without. I although I seem to have stumbled on to a lovies thread.

KittyFinlay · 01/12/2025 10:36

I always do elf jelly- which is just strawberry or raspberry jelly with a candy cane stuck in it! I do my North Pole breakfast on Christmas Eve though as there's no way I'd be able to get everything ready on a random Monday.

Winterbaby21s · 01/12/2025 10:37

That’s sounds lovely, I might even do it myself next year. I hope you all had fun. It sounds like you’re bringing a bit of festive fun to some kids who need it. Enjoy your week off with them and I hope the little ones are doing ok.

This is the Christmas forum - why are you even on here if you’re just going to shit on everything?

What an absolute faff. That’s also a shitload of sugar to pump into them before school.

So so many posters evidently not read the thread,eg the family emergency, kids needing a wee treat. Off school. Authorised absence
Just had to get on in there, with a big sour rebuke and scolding about sugar. Because of sour, nasty digs @ChristmasHasCome has left thread

Mugcake · 01/12/2025 10:41

Cant believe the amount of scrooges on this thread! 😂 we did pancakes and cut them out with cookie cutters so there were gingerbread men, star and Xmas tree with some star sprinkles. And cut up a banana and some strawberry &grapes to look like a snow man/Xmas tree. Took 10 mins! Then gave advent calendar afterwards, it doesn't have to be a huge gourmet feast! just a little bit of fun for kids

You’ve stumbled on a family emergency @ChristmasHasCome do something nice for the affected kids thread. Hence the treats, a distraction from life events

Brewde · 01/12/2025 10:42

Don’t have children but I can see myself doing something like this.

Not difficult to buy one of those Christmas themed waffle makers. Make the batter the night before. 5 minute job.

Some people are busy I get that. But some people are very low effort in general. Like my own mum. Probably why I am the other way.

I think people poke fun cause it makes them feel inadequate. Thats a them problem imo.

This! HQ needs to add a THIS IS THE CHRISTMAS FORUM, GRINCHES NOT WELCOME!! pinned message!

Worralorra · 01/12/2025 10:44

That’s a really lovely idea to cheer up some kids who are having a hard time, while also making it a bit special for your teens!

Take no notice of the naysayers - it sounds lovely, and they will retain the memory of it forever…

It came up on my trending posts. I will hide it! I can't be doing with an alternative world where if you didn't grow your own tree and pluck your own turkey - can you even call it Christmas.....

Consideringparttime · 01/12/2025 10:48

For those miseries on here, believe it or not this was a thing when I was little (and I'm 51)
On first Dec(actually the night before), mum would get out our Christmas crockery and our breakfast before school would be in our Christmas mugs and on Christmas plates on the Christmas tablecloth. We'd have a croissant (we only had them once a year then so they were very christmassy)
Everyone on here saying they are 'running' around in the morning and everyone is just 'grabbing' something on the way out need better time management. We got dropped off at school at 7.45 due to mum working and managed breakfast together every morning.
Lots of performative busyness on this thread

Sounds lovely. I’m stealing this idea for when my boy is older, though it will likely be on a smaller scale than yours.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/12/2025 10:30

I always make pancakes for the Gdcs’ breakfast when they’re staying - making the batter the night before is the thing, preferably in a blender, so very quick! And a good pancake pan, used for nothing else, just wiped out each time, never put in the dishwasher.

It's producing them all from one or two pans I find time consuming. There always seems to be someone sitting waiting.

Brewde · 01/12/2025 10:54

I think people sneering at someone wanting to make a child happy with the magic of Christmas is pathetic. Cutting up a bit of toast and making shapes is a one minute job. If you’re too lazy for that don’t sneer at those who have more energy/imagination/time/creativity than you

c'mon now @ChristmasHasCome is this really a secret humble brag?

You can not be in the UK, surely 🙈

You are exactly the kind of poster that are causing people not to bother with Mumsnet
Spiteful you are

jemim · 01/12/2025 10:59

Bloody hell, what miserable arseholes some of you are. Some people revel in misery, wherever they can get it from.

OP, your post genuinely cheered me up on a pretty grumpy and stressful Monday morning. I've never heard of a December 1st breakfast and I'm too much of a chaotic mess in the morning to make something like this a success, but it's definitely something I could introduce for a little post pre-school treat instead of breakfast. My son would LOVE this. It also made me feel all warm and fuzzy thinking about how a couple of kids going through a rough time will have a lovely morning, maybe even forgetting about whatever the problem is for a short time.

Merry Christmas @ChristmasHasCome

Maybe not the healthiest thing to eat every day but the Krusteaz Buttermilk Pancake mix from Costco is SO easy, and they cook way faster than made from scratch. Just around 30 seconds on each side and they're done.

Humble brag. Fucking hell if you knew what these kids were going through it’s certainly nothing to brag about. And it’s a few pancakes, crumpets and fruit dressed up a bit differently.

UK yes.

I've never heard of a special breakfast for 1st December. Sounds like a big old faff before everyone gets off to school/work.

Is this another made up tradition someone on Insta has just invented?

MaloryJones · 01/12/2025 11:05

viques · 01/12/2025 08:46

Why? Just Why? What a waste of energy, time and money, not to mention sending your kids off to school with a full belly load of sugar instead of a nutritious breakfast. I just hope the messages you get from your fellow insta folk make the effort worth while.

You read the thread ?
2 are not of school age and 1 has been given permission to have this week off due to family circumstances

Thanks.

I don't mind doing pancakes at the weekend when we can sit round over a leisurely breakfast and chat as they cycle through the pan, but I don't want to have to get the dc out of bed earlier for something that in all honesty I don't think is as healthy for a school day.

@Consideringparttime commented that people need better time management, but I'd rather the dc had an extra bit of sleep and then a healthy bowl of oats with blueberries, which is quick, nutritious and is ready for everyone at the same moment. It's not time management so much as deciding how to use the time. I don't really see it is worth adjusting the schedule to squeeze in school day pancakes - though I understand the op was doing it as a special morning, and I think that was a lovely thought.

Is there a competition or something on Reddit to come and post the most irrelevant NRTFT snipey, bitter shit on what should be a lovely thread? 🙄
