Did you buy a second stocking for potential second child so it would match?

I’ve just bought a stocking for my baby’s presents and I’m not wondering if I should have ordered the matching one in case we have another baby. I know that’s extra but I had a matching stocking with my siblings and really like it, and it’s not too difficult to store. Has anyone else done this?

I gave my 2 dc mine and my brothers stockings (he’s doesn’t have dc). And they don’t match but they like the family link. What I wished I had is two stockings for each child the same. One to hang up and one hidden ready stuffed.

Get 2 stockings the same for 1 child. I didn't and regret it every year. This is my best parenting advice. For second child buy them 2 new matching stockings. I like each child to have something of their own.

Jollyjoy · 11/10/2025 21:47

I can see why this may seem a bit nuts but I think you have a point. Also yes you could have two for the one child, to give you one less job, you can fill the stocking in advance until waiting until they go to sleep and just swap it in.

Frillysweetpea · 11/10/2025 21:48

They are really easy to make with red felt and can be hand sown if you don't have a machine. You can make them match or individualise as you wish.

LousyGolfer · 11/10/2025 21:49

What if your next pregnancy is twins?

SparklyCardigan · 11/10/2025 21:51

Don't be daft. What if you have twins next?

Haha snap!

drspouse · 11/10/2025 21:51

I made my two stockings out of their baby clothes but only after no 2 was born! We didn't really think DS would care before he was 2.

Glitterandmud · 11/10/2025 21:52

My dc had mis-matching stockings for their first Xmas together, it annoyed me (different sizes, could see that causing friction down the years), so I replaced them, I think that's a great idea OP, excellent planning!

Brackenfield · 11/10/2025 21:53

Why would they match? I would think it's nicer for the children to have their own individual ones rather than one bought without understanding of them as a person.

Nope. My child didn't give a toss about the stocking. It was a cheapy one we got for £1. And we are not poor either.

ninjahamster · 11/10/2025 21:54

Nah, mine had pillowcases like I did growing up!

DoOneBetty · 11/10/2025 21:57

I would buy two if you intend to put a stocking in their room so you can swap out the empty one for a prefilled one. Personally we have stockings downstairs because as a child Dh used to wake up at 3am and start opening his stocking and then was a nightmare overtired thing on Christmas Day.

I made my children's stockings and had to remake them after 15 years as they were getting a bit worn. If you are buying and want matching then yes buy extras.

dontcomeatme · 11/10/2025 22:17

We didn't at the time when we only had 1, but mine, the OHs and the babys were different anyway. I'm excited to pick out DS2 stocking this year to add to our collection x

Bournetilly · 11/10/2025 22:27

I didn’t with my first DC because it was personalised with their name, I did end up buying new matching stockings when DC2 was born, so yes I’d get matching if possible.

The same with other things such as Santa sacks (if you use them) and Christmas Eve boxes.

Hollyhobbi · 11/10/2025 22:39

Such a first world problem. And kids don’t care once there is something in the stockings 😉

ShodAndShadySenators · 11/10/2025 23:43

Make sure they're the same size, the style or pattern doesn't really matter so much. If they look a bit different you could alternate them each year, whether you have another dc or not.

Every year you see desperate appeals from people who've had another baby and want to get an initial stocking in a particular colour and style, so it matches all their other kids' ones. Understandable but it makes sense not to make Christmas harder for yourself than need be, so maybe something to avoid...

Rtmhwales · 12/10/2025 04:57

I’m a bit more mental. I bought 4 matching stockings with each of the children’s initials. Then I bought a spare “S” stocking and a spare “E” stocking for my future Samuel or Emily, at the time my unconceived future child. Who was then actually born 10 months later and was in fact not named Samuel nor Emily. Now I’m dramatically searching for an “I” stocking this year.

This is what made me think to be honest! Last year one of the shops redesigned their initial stockings and people were really trying to find old stock!

Ooh maybe if i bought a personalised stocking for my favourite names, DH would have to go long with them for DC2 😂

We always had one of dad’s socks each 🙂

EndlessDistraction · 12/10/2025 07:05

We had different ones, we've got 4, one each, all the same size but different designs. DCs are young adults now and we still use the same set, get them out and decide who is having which one. Always on beds, I used to get all the wrapped gifts laid out in little piles on our bed then dive into their rooms to get the stockings, fill them and straight back onto beds.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 12/10/2025 07:08

I made my kids stockings. So not a problem.

horchatatresleches · 12/10/2025 07:29

@LousyGolfer @SparklyCardigan if I have twins next I’d be in so much chaos stockings would be the least of my concerns I think! I’d probably end up trawling Vinted during the hours I had in the night though!

Buy a 2nd! Mine have different ones and it annoys me and im sure there will be comments this year about how ds2's is slightly bigger 🙄 It's not like your making a crazy expensive purchase. And if you have another it's a nice that the stocking has been waiting for them. Really wish I'd done this.

In fairness this has been bought as a baby with no understanding of his personality either. It would be these stockings with one in red and one in green.
