Did you buy a second stocking for potential second child so it would match?

I’ve just bought a stocking for my baby’s presents and I’m not wondering if I should have ordered the matching one in case we have another baby. I know that’s extra but I had a matching stocking with my siblings and really like it, and it’s not too difficult to store. Has anyone else done this?

I would buy two if you intend to put a stocking in their room so you can swap out the empty one for a prefilled one. Personally we have stockings downstairs because as a child Dh used to wake up at 3am and start opening his stocking and then was a nightmare overtired thing on Christmas Day.

I made my children's stockings and had to remake them after 15 years as they were getting a bit worn. If you are buying and want matching then yes buy extras.

Edited

The stocking I love has bells in it so we might end up a stockings hung by the fireplace family 😂

I did this. Bought a set of 4 kind of matching - same style different colour (one gold one silver). Then divorced and ended up with a wonderful step son too. So now my 4 stockings have to cover 3 kids and it annoys me every year 🤣🤣

Such a first world problem. And kids don’t care once there is something in the stockings 😉

I have posted in the Christmas topic, and haven’t even posed it as a problem. Just wondering if I should get a second and if anyone else has done the same. DC might not care, but I do! I love Christmas

Personally I don't like everything matching, but if you prefer that then it may be worth it just in case. Don't get a bells one though, there is nothing more amazing or exciting than feeling a heavy, rustley, lump with your feet at the end of the bed when Christmas morning arrives.

DoOneBetty · 12/10/2025 07:39

@horchatatresleches bells? Then definitely get more than one and hang them downstairs Grin you don't want to be jingling that bell every time you put stuff into the stocking on Christmas eve.

As a side note, we just did token gifts from Father Christmas in the stocking then all the other presents were under the tree and from us, the parents. All other gifts were given to the children by the gift giver so they knew who had got them what.

My children are 22 and 19 and still hang up the stocking for Father Christmas.

cardpin · 12/10/2025 07:44

DS had 2 stockings, we hang them on the fireplace but I like to fill the 'spare' one as we go, then I don't end up buying too much/too little in the run up, then switch them out Christmas Eve. We never planned on having another child, but we did get a cat so the 'spare' one now belongs to her Grin

Ooh maybe if i bought a personalised stocking for my favourite names, DH would have to go long with them for DC2 😂

I bought a K for dd, and a H and D for my then unborn baby in autumn 19. who ended up being a H born Apr 20, returned the D. Used both for two years then had an M in Feb 22.

Had to get three new ones for Xmas 22 as I couldn't get the matching M (because the shop had changed their design!) Funny thing is if M had been a girl we still wanted D so that would have been a little annoying 😂.

ViaRia01 · 12/10/2025 07:54

I didn’t but then my two are close in age. First didn’t need a stocking as he’s an Autumn baby so had no concept of his first two Christmases really. By the time he was two (third Christmas) his brother was already here so we bought two matching stockings then.

That’s how it worked in our household growing up and what we’ll do too though I was left wondering why Father Christmas got me a flannel, a wind up car and a chocolate orange while he gave my neighbour a GameBoy!! I think this might be the first year I don’t get a stocking, because my parents said (must have got a message from the big man 😂) that it will end for us when we have kids, which I get and I’d rather funds were diverted to DC. I might still put in words for a Terrys Chocolate Orange though…

I thought about this when I bought my baby’s first stocking last year, but I had it personalised with her name. I figured it won’t matter if any future ones don’t match as long as they’re the same size.

I was such a wriggly sleeper, Father Christmas always left if on my beanbag not my bed because he knew I’d probably kick it off otherwise so I never got the stocking in my bed.

I’d get another one. It’s a minor irritation but every year it does annoy me a tiny bit that the stockings mone have are different sizes and fabrics. One is way stretchier so fits more in .

tragichero · 12/10/2025 08:03

The only reason I wouldn't do this is if there is any chnace you might struggle to cinceive a second time, and when you come to get the stockings out you will find the one for the second child who you never had and be upset by it. Perhaps that's a silly consideration, but it would worry me. But perhaps I am superstitious?

Also, do you know 100% you will stop at two? Would be worse if two kids had the same sticking and the third didn't, than if all were different.

BusWankers · 12/10/2025 08:05

Why would you have matching stockings?

We have all different ones.

Nobody cares.

I've got similar with the stockings - I've only got DS who has his special one but around five spare stockings, all the same size but different designs. A few years ago DSis and I were lamenting that we were the only ones not to get stockings so now we do one for each other - I'm going to be filling the one she passed to me last year.

As long as there's equality in the size, children are terrible for spotting that a sibling's is a teeny bit bigger...

ShowOfHands · 12/10/2025 08:11

I don't like matchy matchy Christmas things and I really don't like matchy matchy children's things so I made stockings for my dc. DS's is around double the size of DD's as well so I'm really committing all the MN faux pas.

OSTMusTisNT · 12/10/2025 08:11

No, siblings aren't clones and deserve to be treated as individuals rather than matchy-matchy.

Moving on 50 years, when they're clearing out the attic to get you moved into a care home you'll be able to say "Oh Bob, that was your 1st stocking" etc.

BunnyLake · 12/10/2025 08:14

I remember my two had a small sack each from the Disney shop (remember that). They had a different Disney character on it but it was the matching size, rather than the aesthetic, I was going for.

This is what’s giving me pause. We we very lucky and conceived quickly with DC but not planning on another quickly (3/4 year gap) so I’ll be over 35 next time. I’m not totally decided on a second and if I decide not to then I’ll have no problem sticking it on Vinted, but if we struggle with secondary infertility and never conceive then I’ll definitely wish I hadn’t bought the damn thing. I do feel as sure as I can that I won’t have a third, unless my second is the aforementioned twins.

Eenameenadeeka · 12/10/2025 08:48

I understand your thinking and I think it's a great idea! I had to try and find something that "went with" the first one (same size and style) 3 years later and I definitely think you are onto something getting one that goes well together now!

WannaBeOrganised · 12/10/2025 08:48

I bought two when my eldest was small - worked well for us as we had one more. Lucky we didn't have twins/a third 😆

Buy 5, if you have the storage space. Then you're covered for your own kids, and can sell the rest on Vinted when you're done to people who didn't do the same :)

Thisismyalterego · 12/10/2025 08:49

I wouldn't worry about matching stockings. I made stockings for our DC, which were the same size but different fabrics. When dcs moved out to live with their partners, I made each couple new , personalised stockings and when the dgc arrived, each one has their own handmade stocking with their name on. For reference, dgc stockings also have bells, but ds and Dil have not reported any issues with the noise.

Bear2014 · 12/10/2025 08:55

We bought a similar stocking for our son (3.5 years younger) that we thought was the same size as DD's and somehow is way smaller. They are 11 and 8 now and we're still using them, somehow with no questions asked 😂 he just gets a few overspill things plonked on the floor underneath

I think that everything I buy for them as babies is a reflection of my taste and mother’s as individuals yet. If DC grows up to hate the stripey jingly one then of course I’ll get a new one more in line with their tastes. If I have a second their presents will be different to match their individual preferences too. But I have a stocking from the same range but different patterns to my siblings and I liked that we all matched and if we’re all home at Christmas now the stockings still come out!

I did get a spare stocking. I was already pregnant with number 2 but having had two missed miscarriages I still wasn't 100% sure this one would pull through (she did!). For the Christmas before her arrival we used the stocking for a family member.
