Ideas for duck themed Christmas

BumblebeeBum · 27/10/2024 06:22

I would like ideas on how to make this Christmas duck themed. Why you ask?

I decided I would (based on an idea I saw here) hide some small rubber ducks around the house on Christmas day and the kids get £1 for each one they find. Just a way to make giving them cash a bit silly and take a bit longer.

The kids asked for a hint for one of their presents and I made a quacking sound. They seem very excited by this and sem to think I will be doing a hook a duck.

So now I am thinking I could make all the ways they get their presents duck themed.

Its just me and 2 kids age 10 and 14. Their presents are smaller and more expensive every year! We don't have any other family and I want Christmas to be fun activites as well as opening presents. We all love escape rooms and puzzles.

So I wondered if anyone else had any ideas for how to fun ways to find their presents and/or ways to make Christmas duck themed.

So far the only extra ideas I have is a duck shaped Pinata and a treasure hunt with duck themed clues. Could dress the dogs up as ducks I suppose?

So oh wise Mumsnetters - how can I make Christmas duck themed?

Actually do hook a duck for them to ‘win’ their presents?

Spray paint rubber ducks and hang them on the tree?

Some fun ideas here which you could make more Christmassy rather than baby shower: www.coolest-parties.com/baby-shower-game-ideas/

Is there anywhere near your home where you could do a duck race? I mean a tiny stream where you can easily retrieve said ducks with a pair of wellies at the end, not chucking them in the Thames and adding to pollution. You could get four different coloured ducks and have a start and finish line. First duck over the line wins something.

You could also do a variation of Bad/ Dirty Santa. The twist being that all the presents have to be duck themed, bought from charity shops in the months leading up to it and under a certain budget. There are many variations on the game. We play a version with dice but pick whatever works for your family.

This sort of random post is why I love MN.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 27/10/2024 06:36

Oh and for the duck race each duck needs a name and a backstory which you decide on the walk to the stream. If nothing else cheering on Clarance will amuse other walkers out for a stroll after lunch.

Thommasina · 27/10/2024 06:39

How will you stop one child finding more ducks than the other and so getting more cash? That would cause a row in our house.

Catcatkitten · 27/10/2024 06:44

I love this idea! Opened this thread thinking it would be about duck as a main instead of turkey but this is much better. I'd fill up the bath and turn it into hook a duck with the numbers on the bottom matching numbers on presents. Maybe put some duck themed jokes in all of the Christmas Quackers...

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 27/10/2024 06:45

Ahh this is cute! I'm going to follow for the hygge. 🙂

UnderOverUp · 27/10/2024 06:46

Make an Aus Womens Weekly duck cake?

Duck wrapping paper.

Serve duck instead of turkey (ok this one could spoil the mood a bit!)

Duck drinks. Wine with a duck on the label is fairly easy to come by (not suggesting you serve it to the kids but if you’re having a drink make it themed!)

If you have a TV with screensaver, ducks.

Set a trail of duck footprints (yellow paper cut out?) leaving their rooms in the morning for them to follow to the first instruction.

If they’re up for party games, pin the beak on the duck!

MrsClausMaybe · 27/10/2024 06:48

Fun socks with ducks on them as a gift?

Wrapping paper with ducks on it, or rubber duckies as a gift topper?

Decorate gingerbread ducks?

Duck paper snowflakes as a craft eg

Roast duck for lunch instead of a turkey….?

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 27/10/2024 06:50

Duck for Christmas dinner? Either a proper traditional roast, or, to up the Fun and Different factor, crispy duck and pancakes! You could do the traditional sides if anyone's bothered.

hockityponktas · 27/10/2024 06:51

Oh I love this😍 I too thought it was going to be duck for dinner instead of turkey!
quick google you can get various Christmas themed rubber ducks to decorate the house.
hook a duck definitely, duck race, duck shoot (nerf guns?) duck shaped piñata, duck themed table decorations?

Globules · 27/10/2024 06:52

What a great idea! My sense of family fun.

Duck for dinner instead of turkey.

Pin the beak on the duck (instead of tail on the donkey)

Build a duck from Lego competition

Have duck themed TV throughout the day(duck tales, Howard the duck etc)

The chocolate game, but with a beak, tail, top, bottom, wings and flippers to dress into

Play duck hunt, the video game

You know you can get plastic ducks dressed up as characters? We have a Cleopatra, Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Mozart. Use them as inspiration to draw your own character duck and people have to guess who they are. See

www.duck-world.com

And having googled "rubber duck characters" you can get lots of Christmassy rubber duck for a very low price from Temu/Shein. There's a whole host of games you play with those. At their most basic level, replace the counters in your normal board games with ducks.

I'm feeling very inspired to do something similar now @BumblebeeBum Thanks for the prompt!

Flustration · 27/10/2024 06:55

This is exactly the level of madness I aspire to. Bravo!

Obviously you MUST do hook a duck. I think the duck race is inspired too. Maybe you could create a duck-themed quiz? My DC love a quiz!

Have them work together then splt the ducks up equally when they have finished. This is how we do Easter egg hunts anyway.

Flangeosaurus · 27/10/2024 07:01

I saw an absolutely insane looking family game on instagram last year where one person was stood with a blindfold on and a pool noodle and everyone else had those squawking rubber chicken dog toys Grinstrapped to their feet and were running round trying not to get hit with the pool noodle. You can definitely get duck dog toys which make a noise!

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 27/10/2024 07:01

I think they're old enough to understand that sometimes there has to be a winner.

ChequerboardCharlie · 27/10/2024 07:07

You can also make a duck themed Spotify playlist for when they are opening the presents- perhaps alternated with Christmas songs. My kids would have loved this at that age. They will remember it forever!

ChequerboardCharlie · 27/10/2024 07:09

And make sure to tell them you’ve hidden 5 more ducks than you have to keep them busy for longer, and then sneakily put the rest of the ducks out later in really obvious places.

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 27/10/2024 07:09

Donald Duck cartoons on the day.

Littletreefrog · 27/10/2024 07:17

Duck Tales if only for the theme tune.

The ducks will have their initials on. Only 'thier' duck wins them the money.

This ups the insanity level nicely! Love it.

Big thanks for all the ideas so far. And for the enthusiasm!

It feels a lot of responsibility to make Christmas 'special' as its all on me. Plus every year can merge into one memory. Very grateful that our Christmases are peaceful and happy though, as mine weren't as a kid. Want to go all out in silliness/fun and just have a laugh.

Oh my god, just looked up this cake - it's gloriously hideous even before I have attempted it.
