If you had turkey this year…

can you post what you had (eg whole bird/crown/breast), how many it was supposed to serve & how much meat there actually was?

Hoping I can eventually get it right one year! We had an M&S large turkey breast joint, was to serve 8-10 people. I also cooked a 750g gammon joint.

There were 5 of us. It was just enough for dinner on the day, meagre sandwiches on Boxing Day & mixed with leeks & mushrooms to make a pie. All gone now.

I’d have liked enough to make another round of sandwiches!

We had a frozen turkey from sainsburys. It weighed 5.6 kilo and said 7-10 servings.

It did 7 on christmas day, we have 4 servings for a second days roast and then enough for a hearty soup or a pie filling with other bits for 4.

But on christmss day we had ham slices and pigs in blankets to, so i think it makes the turkey go further.

Cuwins · 27/12/2023 12:26

I think that's going to be tricky as it varies so much based on how much Turkey people eat. I'm not a big fan of Turkey and love all the Christmas sides so I had 1 small slice- I imagine your Turkey would have fed 12 people my portion atleast!

Fallulah · 27/12/2023 12:33

We had a Morrisons one this year - whole turkey, said it served 7-10. Did four of us with big appetites on Christmas Day (we have pigs in blankets, no other meat but stacks of stuffing and veg), five with bubble and squeak, pickles etc on Boxing Day and we still have loads left - sent my mum home with a big Tupperware box full and there’s the same left for us.
I was really impressed with the Morrisons turkey - lovely flavour, plenty of the good browner meat and stayed moist.

welshweasel · 27/12/2023 12:52

We had a 7kg turkey. Did 6 of us for Xmas lunch, 2 of us had turkey fry up on Boxing Day, will come out for leftover tea tonight then hoping I'll get at least 6 portions to bag up and freeze for curries. Bigger the better I think!

In terms of what the packaging says, I reckon they serve half the number that it says!

Lovelydovey · 27/12/2023 12:53

We had a small crown supposed to feed 7 - it fed 6 for Christmas dinner, plus a few sandwiches and plates of leftovers, and stock and remaining bits went into a Turkey minestrone.

mynameiscalypso · 27/12/2023 12:56

We had a COOK turkey crown stuffed with a duck and an apricot stuffing. It said it served 12; there were 8 of us (although I didn't really eat it) and there were plenty of leftovers; maybe half of it?

PracticalPatricia · 27/12/2023 12:56

We had a turkey breast roll from the butchers. I want to say it was about 1.5 kg, but can't remember! It was <£20 and served 5 on the day with leftovers. Nearly all gone now which is ideal really as I don't like it hanging round for days.

shearwater2 · 27/12/2023 12:58

I got a free range bronze turkey crown from Sainsbury's this year and was really disappointed. In recent years I've always got them from Waitrose and it has always been lovely.. Cooked it the same way and by weight etc but it was so tough and chewy. Definitely back to Waitrose next time.

I guess there is free range and "free range".

AdoraBell · 27/12/2023 12:59

We had a turkey just under 3.5 kilos. Four people, had bubble and squeak with sliced turkey. There is enough left for 2 more meals.

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 27/12/2023 13:01

Tesco crown

(There were 9 (5 adults and 4 children eating))

Ordered one to feed 9-11. They sent one to feed 13.

It was astronomical. Even with very generous portions, eating more on Boxing Day and putting some in soup I've still thrown half away.

Will order much smaller next year.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 27/12/2023 13:04

A whole turkey sold as for 7-8 people, plus a massive piece of rolled breast l, which was almost as big as the whole bird. There were 10 of us, but we had huge amounts left after Christmas dinner. As planned, dh made a massive turkey curry for Boxing Day dinner, which we finished. He's frozen the rest of the turkey to do a repeat Christmas Dinner for PIL when they come on 29th.

lingmerth · 27/12/2023 13:06

We had a 2.5kg turkey breast from our local farm. 8-10 said to feed. We had 7 for lunch xmas day, turkey sarnies in the evening, Xmas dinner part 2 fir 5 yesterday, turkey and chips today for 3 and I'll make a turkey curry tomorrow with what's left. As others have said though it depends how much you use at Xmas lunch. We all love the other parts of the lunch so turkey isn't the main portion of our lunch plate.

Thesearmsofmine · 27/12/2023 13:08

Turkey crown from the butchers. was to serve 6, fed 5 of us(I’d say more like 4 and smallest eats like a sparrow) and loads left over for a pie today and a curry and whatever’s left will go into a pasta bake or similar.

banivani · 27/12/2023 13:08

There were 12 adults and I had three turkey breasts (with skin on but sadly no bone, can’t seem to find that cut here). Each about 1,2 kg. I used a variation of Poppy O’Toole’s dry brining and compound butter method to cook it. Almost over cooked it but got it out just in time, enough for everyone and about a quarter breast left in slices that we ate for leftovers today. Surprised people ate that much on the day but I think an excellent gravy helped and the subtle seasoning of the turkey with Poppy’s method was very good too.

MedievalNun · 27/12/2023 13:10

We got a whole small turkey from Aldi, said it was for 5-6 people. Fed the 3 of us Christmas Day; did leftovers with cauliflower cheese yesterday, quite a bit has been frozen & we're having turkey curry tonight. I always brine my turkey so it stays moist regardless but I'll probably get the same one next year as it was a good size amd had plenty of meat on it.

PickAChew · 27/12/2023 13:11

A Waitrose free range crown to serve 4. It served the 4 of us, all adult, then we all had well stuffed sandwiches and there’s 6 more generous portions in the freezer.

tbh, with all the other meaty things cooked, no one has a particularly large portion of the actual turkey on the day, here.

Quietplaces · 27/12/2023 13:11

We had a turkey crown, 2.8kg, to serve 8-10 people and we didn't strip it well (had other stuff going on) so got less off it than could have. It served 3 for Christmas day, 3 for small sandwiches Boxing Day and curry for 2 for tonight so if we'd stripped it clean it would have managed the 10 it said.

Cookerhood · 27/12/2023 13:11

Why would you throw it away? I either keep one breast for roast another day or chop up the remaining meat & bag it up & use it in stir fries, pies etc. yum!

Sgtmajormummy · 27/12/2023 13:11

My turkey was basically the size a big chicken- 2.5 kilos, the largest they had at the Italian supermarket. So I added a ham hock that greedy guts DS ate all by himself!
I carved it into 6 “portions”, 2 wings with a chunk of breast meat attached, 2 drumsticks and 2 breasts.
With 4 of us I thought we’d have nothing left over but there was one wing portion and half a breast, so maybe 200g of meat. They were eaten with turkey and Bisto gravy and reheated roast potatoes the next day. The carcass (still with scraps on it) made about 3 litres of clear stock. Half got frozen and half made veg soup for tonight.

ExpensiveDecorations · 27/12/2023 13:12

1.5kg breast joint, fed 6 on the day and enough leftovers for probably stir fry for 4 (we froze it). My ideal would be minimal leftovers which is why we went small but I do miss the dark meat.

tiredandolderthanithought · 27/12/2023 13:13

Had a 3kg crown and said served 16. It served 8 on Christmas Day and that was only half so guessing their estimation was right

You know you can freeze the cooked meat instead of wasting it?

aSwarmOfMidgies · 27/12/2023 13:20

Serves 8 to 10 people

You wanted
5 main dinners
5 butties
And a pie for 5

Serves 12-15 would be more appropriate

MissAtomicBomb1 · 27/12/2023 13:24

3.5kg turkey breast joint (butchers) fed 8 people (2 were children)
Left overs for 2 rounds of sandwiches a pie & a curry

Howmanysleepsnow · 27/12/2023 13:26

6.5kg Jimmy’s farm turkey
7 on Christmas Day
4 on Boxing Day
6 Christmas sandwiches so far

all v generous portions! And some scraps for the cats/ dog.

enough left for 4 more plates of roast dinner and 6 sandwiches
