The men were out in force today panicking

😂In town today to get nails done and boy were those men panicking - in any shop with a sale sign even Hobbs and Weird Fish holding up things looking at them , putting them down and then picking them up again. Do women really want men buying them clothes? I feel like pushing them all into Boots - at least there is a chance of getting something semi decent from the Beauty section! 😂

Laughing at those defend "the men". Everyone knows this is a phenomena. Men who only have to buy for their wife or partner and leave it till the last minute. Retailers know this too and display expensive suitable items near checkouts on Christmas Eve for these men to buy.

The queue for Tiffany’s at the Royal Exchange is hilarious, all men. The champagne bar should start selling drinks in the queue.

Is that open today? I thought they were closed at weekends, I'm probably totally out of date.

‘The men’. Love it. Peak Mumsnet. They are such different (and vile) creatures.
I would love to hear about ‘the women’ going shopping in supermarkets.

Oh give over, it’s obviously light hearted & is actually rooted in truth - I worked enough Xmas eves in retail to say with some certainty that yes - the last minute panic buyers are mainly men (and yes, by that point they are in a panic!)

NDerbys32 · 23/12/2023 11:53

Not so 'wild eyed bloke' here. Pressie shopping done a week early and wrapped.

I went (was sent, obvs) to a certain large chemist with a very detailed description of some lady face stuff, including a tester shade on paper, and got fobbed off by a patronising, over made up female assistant, so nipped across the store and bought myself some new aftershave instead.

Jimmy choo - Aqua - and very nice it is too. I hope the staff are on commission as the lady who helped me couldn't have been nicer.

Wife is at work until 3pm today, a veterinary receptionist, and dealing with some increasingly dreadfully rude clients.

I do all the cooking too, and it's beef Wellington on Monday, whilst I swan about being dead smug, stealing chocolates, drinking wine, probably in my pyjamas and, of course, smelling particularly gorgeous 😆😆.

Whatever you're doing, enjoy it. Christmas - what a right faff eh?

stayathomer · 23/12/2023 11:55

I’m a woman and out panic buying too. Some of us are just disorganised/didn’t have time

AngelaRippingMyLegIntheAir · 23/12/2023 11:56

I was actually in Matalan a couple of days ago and a guy asked me and another customer "Ladies, is this a cardigan?" I kid you not - what confused him was that it didn't have any buttons and his Mum had asked for a cardigan. This is it.

My SIL and I used to organise a shopping trip to the local huge M&S the night before Valentine’s Day, just because watching the panicked blokes was so entertaining!

I'd happily join you!

I think DH and I had the right idea when we got married on the 13th, so we have never celebrated that date. Too tacky imho.

NDerbys32 · 23/12/2023 12:15

We celebrate Vals day on the 15th. Much cheaper flowers!

Dagnabit · 23/12/2023 12:16

My husband gets a list - normally I can’t think of much so he’s pestering me for more ideas. This year, I give him a massive list and he’s only gone and bought the lot - I can tell by the amount of parcels! So now I have loads of presents and he has a modest amount 🙄😂

JFDIYOLO · 23/12/2023 12:18

I inform my OH what he's bought me.

He informs me what I've bought him.

We buy a joint Picturehouse cinema membership together, for date nights throughout the year.

We exchange cards.

It works very nicely.

Mummyofbananas · 23/12/2023 12:21

I'm a panic buyer too haha

My OH says every year he's not buying me makeup again, and every year he walks into boots and gets cornered by the benefit girl at the start so I get some nice benefit makeup.

AngelaRippingMyLegIntheAir · 23/12/2023 12:34

Years ago a friend told me "if you don't want to be disappointed at Christmas then just buy it yourself and tell him it's in the cupboard " and it works.

This is the time to go. If you can hold your nerve you make a killing on Christmas Eve as they start marking down for Boxing Day.

Growlybear83 · 23/12/2023 09:46

I'm not panic buying at all - I'm just doing my Christmas present shopping today as I usually do, apart from a few things that ordered from Amazon earlier this week . It's like all other Christmas preparations -I have never started buying things weeks ahead or preparing way in advance for Christmas, or anything by else like holidays. Apart from booking my supermarket delivery when the slots are released and ordering my turkey from the farm when they first start taking orders, I don't do anything until the week before xmas. I made a big change this year and put my tree up on Tuesday rather than xmas eve because my daughter came home on Wednesday and is only here for a week so I didn't want to waste the time she's here doing things like that.

How can you shop in a day I don't understand how that's possible. Surely you can't physically carry them?

festivetinseling · 23/12/2023 12:53

Yes... mine is out today on the hunt for my present. 😂

Apparently, saying that I don't need clothes, perfume, a book or chocolates means that there are simply no other things available in the shops anywhere that he could possibly buy me, so I'm going to enjoy finding out what he's come up with this time (he has form for peculiar gifts).

NewtonPulsifer · 23/12/2023 12:53

I’m Chair of Trustees in a multi academy trust. We do our best to show that we value all of our staff, and know they can’t take annual leave like in other jobs so we have given them two wellbeing days that they can take at any time (there are parameters like we can’t have all the staff off at once, or they cant be off during SATs or exam time if their jobs relates to that work). It has been very well received by staff over the years we have it in place. We know some do take time off for Christmas shopping, and often they coordinate their requests between each other to ensure we can accommodate them. Some go to see their child relatives in nativity plays then go shopping. Others take their days at other times in the year and so all online shopping. We need to value each other’s time more as a society.

IncompleteSenten · 23/12/2023 12:53

My husband tried that crap with me the other day.
Apparently he hasn't had any money to buy me a present.
I laughed in his face and said you've had money to buy vodka. Of course you've had money to buy me a present.
He at least looked embarrassed.
I said I only asked for a nail varnish. They're a fiver. Who do you think you're kidding.

Then he had to go out to buy a mobile phone top up and was gone 3 hours. 🤣

I don't let him get away with that helpless man shit. Bollocks is bollocks.

Boomboom22 · 23/12/2023 13:09

Mine was out earlier. Usually gets some good stuff!

rc22 · 23/12/2023 13:09

I've bought all of my own presents this year. I've given them to my husband told him how much money he owes me and told him to wrap them. Don't know why we bother really!!

haggisaggis · 23/12/2023 13:13

My dh started buying Christmas presents back in October so no last minute rush for him. Also I absolutely hate buying myself clothes so he buys them for me. I have always liked (most!) of his choices.

reluctantbrit · 23/12/2023 13:15

That's why DH gets a specific whish list incl. links
He can then choose and in 90% of the time orders online.

Undineimmor · 23/12/2023 13:15

Apparently I have an expensive present bought online. Not holding my breath but will be grateful for anything!

maddiemookins16mum · 23/12/2023 13:19

Those pesky men eh. For what it’s worth, the people I saw ‘panicking’ in M and S this morning at 8.55 were women.

Lucyintheskywithadiamond · 23/12/2023 13:37

MsRosley · 23/12/2023 10:42

Any theories about why men do this, apart from that they're selfish arsehole who can't be bothered to think of anyone but themselves until the last minute.

Maybe in your world but I would say for the majority probably not!
