The men were out in force today panicking

😂In town today to get nails done and boy were those men panicking - in any shop with a sale sign even Hobbs and Weird Fish holding up things looking at them , putting them down and then picking them up again. Do women really want men buying them clothes? I feel like pushing them all into Boots - at least there is a chance of getting something semi decent from the Beauty section! 😂

My dp and fil are currently in town together panicking buying for mil. It's a tradition apparently.
I personally couldn't do that, but means I'm home wrapping with a Christmas movie and feeling a bit festive and not stressed

TwilightSkies · 23/12/2023 13:40

For what it’s worth, the people I saw ‘panicking’ in M and S this morning at 8.55 were women.

Yeah I’d bet on it that those women are in charge of cooking Xmas dinner for multiple people! Organising, buying, prepping, cooking and cleaning up after!

Those pesky men eh. For what it’s worth, the people I saw ‘panicking’ in M and S this morning at 8.55 were women.

Men are just as capable as women. That's why we shouldn't let them get away with this bullshit.
Telling them to pack it in with the pathetic helpless act is important.

Makkacakka · 23/12/2023 13:41

Nope, no clothes please!
I make it easy for mine. I make him a list of suggestions. I just want small, simple things - sweet treats, drink, a family calendar/organiser! No stress for him and I get what I will appreciate and actually use.

seagull82 · 23/12/2023 13:47

I work in retail, lots of men aimlessly wondering the aisles this morning.
I just buy myself presents and then tell DH he owes me £200. He prefers this setup so it works well.

SomethingBlues · 23/12/2023 14:16

I managed to prevent the Christmas Eve panic shop for my DH. I took his credit card, bought myself a print that I wanted and have told him to wrap it. Job done. I get something I want (unlike the year I was genuinely given dog toys and birthday paper) and he doesn’t have to panic shop.

It's just another thing we give men an 'out' on.

My adult sons are excellent gift buyers. We need to stop expecting so little.

My 16 year old only finished school at 1pm yesterday so his Dad is taking him out today. It's a ridiculous date to finish on, the poor staff.
My 13 year old finished on the 15th, way better.

Why is it more ridiculous than every other job that finished yesterday? Don't they have evenings and weekends like the rest of us?

ANightmareBeforeChristmas · 23/12/2023 14:30

My husband was fairly organised albeit needed some prodding.

He'd been complaining that he didn't know what to buy me, so next time we were in town together I steered him to a jewellery shop and started pointing at things within his budget (we don't spend much, around £30). "Ooh, that's a lovely silver ring ... and so is that one, yes the one there at £29.99. What do you think of that necklace - I really like it. Oh, look at that tennis bracelet, it would go really well with my watch and it's got £10 off".

That done, we wandered on to continue shopping, then he says 'Have you thought of anything you want for Christmas yet?"😁

I gently explained why I had been so vocally admiring the contents of Warren James's window, and the penny finally dropped.

Anonymouslyposting · 23/12/2023 14:58

My delightful DH announced on Monday that he had finished his Christmas shopping. I reminded him that we have two children and asked what he’d got for them. He looked at me like it was entirely news to him that (a) we have children and (b) those children might need presents…

Maybe in your world but I would say for the majority probably not!

So what's your theory about why this is a thing for so many men that it's pretty much a trope?

Igglepiggleandhisboat · 23/12/2023 15:18

I’ve just seen the queue of 40 or so men at Pandora!

I ordered and wrapped mine and got him to write my name on the outside so the DC think he did it 🤦🏻‍♀️

Last minute Christmas shopping does not make a man shellfish arsehole, maybe in your world but not mine. I also know quite a few women doing some last minute shopping today. Are they shellfish arseholes too? I don’t really care why people shop for presents a few days before Christmas, non of my business.

daffodilandtulip · 23/12/2023 15:32

I didn't go to town but I went on a big dog walk. I saw lots of men wandering aimlessly with toddlers, as if they'd been kicked out while mum cleans and wraps.

mondaytosunday · 23/12/2023 16:58

We had a £50 limit for each other, and it was a challenge to get something interesting. His taste wasn't mine though, and one year in particular he got me a carved wooden jewelry box he was so chuffed with it but I really didn't like it! But he was so happy with his find. I'm afraid I fell back on Liberty print silk tie for him (he had quite the collection).
He was a very busy man but we'd always take a day to go shopping for Christmas, most of the time spent in a book shop.

I always found that going for a walk with toddlers seemed to be a lot like wandering aimlessly. Any little thing could grab their attention, staring at raimbows in an oily puddle, strange twigs, branches moving, the world must have been fascinating to them.

AngelaRippingMyLegIntheAir · 23/12/2023 18:42

If the men aren't out on their own then some of them are out with Mum AND the kids - this was the story in the supermarket a few days ago. One person doing the shopping but an accompaniment of others just getting in the way - moaning, crying, hands in pockets, running with trolleys 😊

I can’t sell whether you actually mean shellfish?!

I hate getting cosmetics, perfumes, shower stuff from anyone. It just accumulates as I never use it and I end up giving it away. I'd rather get something for the horse!

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 23/12/2023 19:26

Dh was out at 8am this morning collecting a gift for a family new baby who we didn’t know was coming over from abroad and we were seeing them at a party. It’s a child of a in law of an in law so not close to have bothered otherwise.

He found my brother in the supermarket at same time as DIL had got the click and collect wrong and forgot to check out their changes so he had to do the whole shop again 😂

Interesting you're managing to ignore the very many examples on this thread of men behaving like selfish arseholes who do the absolute bare minimum in terms of showing the important people in their life that they care.

HermioneWeasley · 23/12/2023 19:34

I was shopping in a Cath Kidston store in the run up to Xmas a few years ago when a young man came in looking panicked. An assistant approached him and he said his girlfriend had told him to get her a bag from there.

”do you know which one she wants?”

young man looks around like he’s about to burst into tears

”I know it has flowers on it”.

😁😁😁

Whisperingangel22 · 23/12/2023 22:02

Ha that was probably my DH. He popped to the shops yesterday and today I found a zara bag on the floor next to the bed with what feels like 2 photo frames in. Every bloody year - he panic buys me photo frames but without any photos. I've got so many photo frames I could open a shop. I knew he would do that. What he doesn't realize is that he's also bought me a new pair of boots, a robot hoover and a new phone 🤣 they're wrapped up under the tree.

WavingCatsandDogs · 24/12/2023 00:34

The last time I left DP to it I got a random decorated wine glass from the discount isle in TK Maxx no doubt as my main present, I was gutted.

I now send links.
