The men were out in force today panicking

😂In town today to get nails done and boy were those men panicking - in any shop with a sale sign even Hobbs and Weird Fish holding up things looking at them , putting them down and then picking them up again. Do women really want men buying them clothes? I feel like pushing them all into Boots - at least there is a chance of getting something semi decent from the Beauty section! 😂

Trying working in a florist on Valentine's Day. That's the pinnacle of men panic buying! 😂

megletthesecond · 23/12/2023 10:33

brim yes! I used to work in a very gift-y shop. On the last two days before Xmas we'd have loads of blokes coming in panicking and asking what to buy. We basically started working our way down from the most expensive remaining gift boxes to get them cleared. They didn't care about the price.

fatandhappy47 · 23/12/2023 10:33

DH and I were panic buying yesterday together.

We aren't doing gifts to each other this year as money is tight

MsRosley · 23/12/2023 10:42

Any theories about why men do this, apart from that they're selfish arsehole who can't be bothered to think of anyone but themselves until the last minute.

Do what? Go to shops before Christmas? So all women stay home?

Wow. Projecting much? 😂😂😂

I have ADHD and I was out shopping yesterday and will be out in a panic again today. Obviously Christmas isn’t a surprise each year but I do find it hard to plan and shop in advance, I’ve done as much shopping as a I could using Amazon Prime in last few days but still have a couple of people left to buy for. I find Christmas really stressful and would rather say let’s do no gifts for any body aside from DNs but think the rest of my family might be offended by it if I said kids only or would still get me something anyway as I’m single and childless so would have nothing to open and then id feel bad for not reciprocating.

I sent links to my partner for 3 things I wanted, I think he bought all 3 which are still currently sitting in the brown bags they were delivered in, in the place I put them after taking delivery. Presuming they'll be handed to me in said bags on Christmas Day

TheYearOfSmallThings · 23/12/2023 11:07

God, everyone I know who works in schools is saying that. It's like they honestly don't realise that most people work right up to Xmas day every year

But in fairness, most of us book a weekday of A/L for child-free, less busy shopping in December - I know I do, and most of my colleagues too. That isn't an option for school staff, so the few days at the end are probably useful.

AtillaTheHon · 23/12/2023 11:13

I remember working in a department store when I was 19 and Christmas eve was hilarious. A man came in looking for something for his mum and just handed me his mobile phone so his wife could tell me what to buy 😂🙄.

I'd like to think that isn't all men though. And I'm sure it's lots of women too! I haven't got anything for dh this year at his request. He's getting me a £25 pair of jeans. We don't do a lot of Christmas presents to each other but do more for birthdays. Things like trips away or meals out though as we have enough stuff and if we need anything we can buy it ourselves through the year. A random sale item from Hobbs or Weird Fish wouldn't be welcome!

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 23/12/2023 11:22

What I love best is about 10pm on Christmas Eve he asks ever to nonchalantly where the wrapping paper is! Makes me laugh every year!

Yes but lots of schools finish a week or so early then go back earlier. We finished Yesterday too. They have done no work over the last week and we have to shoehorn in shows, parties, pantos, Christmas shopping, visits to relatives. Then you have to fill in January which is cold and bleak until they go back. I’d much rather a few extra days before Christmas. It costs the same in annual leave taking it before Christmas as it does after.

BigFatLiar · 23/12/2023 11:34

Do women really want men buying them clothes?

DH does sometimes, knows my sizes and likes so no problem.
First Christmas we were a couple my brother (a stirer) persuaded him that as we were a couple he should get me lingerie. He then let me know that my bf was getting me lingerie for Christmas. BF had gone to his parents and we opened our presents as a family. Mum handed me a smallish soft present from BF and I had to open it in front of everyone, fortunately instead of something skimpy he'd bought thermals. I didn't normally wear thermals but I did work in a cold office. They came in handy and I bought more sets myself.
These days he starts the Christmas rush in August, so we're all set.

Leave present buying until the last moment, instead of planning ahead and making sure to get something really thoughtful.

How am I projecting exactly? I don't leave presents until the last minute. I buy things for the people I love throughout the year, or ask them well ahead of time what they would like.

My DH was one of them.

No idea what he bought for me but he did all the kids shopping (from him, I have sorted all the main stuff) yesterday in a panic. This included buy stuff in one shop at full RRP walking into another and seeing its half price in the sale then returning the first to buy the second cheaper one.

Every year I tell him to shop around FIRST but he never learns.

WandaWonder · 23/12/2023 09:10

I saw lots of men and women shopping, how do you know they were panicking and not just shopping like everyone else?

Because I have special powers that detect this!

Our annual leave is always so precious I have never done this and don't know other people who do this either. But I am in a lower paid job where we all need to save our annual leave for when the children are off. Shopping is for weekends, late evenings, or online in the evenings.

‘The men’. Love it. Peak Mumsnet. They are such different (and vile) creatures.
I would love to hear about ‘the women’ going shopping in supermarkets.

The women are there wrestling with turkeys 😂

I’ve wrapped everything and realised that one of my four children has a smaller pile than the rest, so I will be out either today or tomorrow getting her some more presents.

every year I say I’m going to do it better (buy much less and be more organised) and every year I kind of fail! Oh well.

Save yourself the trouble by depleting the other DCs' gift piles. Recycle for next year's birthdays.

Win-win

Lovemusic82 · 23/12/2023 11:49

Why don’t they just ask their wives/partners what they would like?

I wouldn’t want my partner choosing some random item of clothing or even beauty products unless I had asked for a specific item/product. Most of the time no thought has gone into choosing a gift, they just go out at the last minute and panic buy items that will never get worn or used.

I remember my first Christmas with DH (now ex DH) and he bought me the most awful cheap earrings that he spotted near the till whilst buying me something else equally as awful.
