How much was your Christmas supermarket shop?

The prices are absolutely crazy this year, our supermarket shop is ridiculously expensive at £347! I have another delivery booked for New Year’s Eve but will make adjustments depending on what’s left over. We are a family of 5 not hosting Christmas dinner have the in-laws over on Christmas Eve where we will be having pizza counter pizzas with sides all of which is in the shop, the turkey/pigs/sausage meat stuff is not included in this total as is from the butchers.
AIBU to ask how much your Christmas shop was?

£203 Aldi. That's doesn't include turkey or desert (family are bringing this) or much booze as we already lots at home but did get a bottle of Aldi own brand champers

grayhairdontcare · 21/12/2023 18:59

Tesco today £247
M&S on Saturday £ 195
No alcohol on either of these.

Are you Jack Monroe and is the curry peach and chickpea?

I have no idea who Jack Monroe is but no and no to both questions. And it will be a big pot of beef rogan josh, the texture of chickpeas are 🤢

Buttercup176 · 21/12/2023 19:08

£300, out Xmas and Boxing Day but taking some food with us.

PeapodBurgundy · 21/12/2023 19:21

My delivery is coming in within the next couple of hours, it's just shy of £360, which covers my normal shopping for the month for myself, 2 primary aged DC and 2 cats, food for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day for the three of us, plus my ex, and some extra baking ingredients for when I'm hosting a few people between Christmas and New Year.

I have been adding some bits of sweets, biscuits and bottles of juice/pop etc to my monthly shop for the past few months, but not tonnes.

Capturetotalelotion · 21/12/2023 19:34

About £500 for food, not sure what DH has spent on booze but prob about that again. 3 of us for Christmas dinner and family on Boxing Day for salads and cold cuts. That’s restrained for this year, we can afford it and are happy to spend to help the economy. We have also made a cash donation to the local food bank. Christmas is always a very emotional time for us and this year we have a lot to be thankful for. Gift giving isn’t a big thing in our family, just having a good feast and feeling greatful for our privilege.

Gran0laG1rl · 21/12/2023 19:38

Bloody hell what are you eating that costs £1000 fir 3?😱

CherryJones1 · 21/12/2023 19:41

About £300/ £350 and there's 5 of us for Christmas dinner but food also covers Christmas Eve and Boxing Day

Desserts (profiteroles stack, passion fruit roulade, sticky toffee pudding and raspberry pannacotta) alone were £50

A large organic chicken and a joint of beef

Chocolates , sweets, soft drinks

Charcuterie board was £40

Cheeses were £60

Wellhellooooodear · 21/12/2023 19:41

About £200 but that's not including chocolates, nibbles, pickles, Xmas pudding etc as I've been picking bits up in my regular shop for the past few weeks. Also not including booze as DH is getting it tomorrow

CherryJones1 · 21/12/2023 19:44

@JustFannyingAboot no more than 20 quid for both of you? So £10 per person.

You win the competitive under-spending award

Capturetotalelotion · 21/12/2023 19:44

3 for dinner but 10 for Boxing Day so it’s not that much really. That’s also for Christmas eve treats. Everyone knows that £500 for food doesn’t buy an awful lot these days…

Gran0laG1rl · 21/12/2023 19:47

I spent £240 for 5( food and drink)and got a lot of very nice food. Just don’t know how anybody can spend £1000. It’s not necessary/

ploikj · 21/12/2023 19:49

@Gran0laG1rl it's not necessary to spend £240 either 🤷‍♀️ everyone has their own budgets and wishes.

Didimum · 21/12/2023 19:50

About £450. That’s for 9 of us (4 children), including booze.

Poblano · 21/12/2023 19:50

Tesco delivery is £200, M&S order a further £150. This is for 5 adults (3 x DC are all 18+) plus an extra 3 adults on Christmas Day.

This will last pretty much all week, bar a top up on bread and milk and some fresh vegetables. It also contains alcohol.

I've had a good year this year with a promotion so I've splashed out on having a good Christmas.

Gran0laG1rl · 21/12/2023 19:52

£240 is for 5 for a week so £50 per person and includes washing powder and other necessities. Really not sure how we’d get it lower . But £1000 for 3 over 3 days is obscene
and the posts a tad boastful.

DyslexicPoster · 21/12/2023 19:53

£150 for six of us. I have massively cut back on alcohol and Christmas snacks. We are normally earing left overs for a week. Not any more and I think I prefer it this way

NameChange259 · 21/12/2023 19:55

JadziaD · 21/12/2023 15:22

Yup, it was INSANE. The actual online delivery was £350. I bought meat and booze separately and that was easily another £150. And I've been picking up small bits and pieces along the way as well so who knows?

Admittedly, we're hosting Christmas for 12 people AND have family arriving this weekend who will not be staying with us but in a local hotel so I've assumed we'll be feeding them a fair bit - even if it's just light suppers after a day sightseeing or whatever. But it means I've upped things like nice soft drinks, chocolates, biscuits etc and bought loads of things like par-cooked bread/rolls and crackers and cheese for spontaneous feeding of the masses!

This is our situation too. £350, no turkey or ham, not much booze. Also doing a Christmas dinner for 12. Had to buy a lot of berries for dessert but other than that can’t understand why it’s so expensive Sad

I didn't realise it was a competition, but thank you 👍

Housebuyer37 · 21/12/2023 19:59

Alot! And we're not having dinner at home christmas day or boxing day but wanted some lovely treats, wine and cheese for the evening because we will be home early with our toddler and some nice breakfasts.

It was worth it and I'm currently drinking wine and eating quality street as I finished work today.

19 crimes is on offer in Asda for £6.33 BTW if that helps anybody!

ploikj · 21/12/2023 20:00

@Gran0laG1rl I assure you, you could, you're being hypocritical, do you think all families of 5 are having to spend a minimum of £240? You're being chippy, if you're insecure about your financial situation don't come on a spending thread, there will always be an array of answers.

Gran0laG1rl · 21/12/2023 20:03

Nope financially very secure thanks. But however you look at it £1000 for 3 people over 3 days is obscene and unnecessary . What on earth are they eating and drinking?

Tree12 · 21/12/2023 20:03

£200 but I treated myself to my first ever Christmas shop in Waitrose. It wasn’t as expensive as I was expecting. Family of four.

Titicacacandle · 21/12/2023 20:06

I bought chocolate/crisps/nuts in November.

I have spent £200 this week, that's not just christmas it's the weeks food as well. My booze cupboard is already well stocked. Usually spend more but it's only the 3 of us this year.

xmaspanic · 21/12/2023 20:10

Felt pretty smug. I sold a piece of Furniture for £200 and with the £200 plus a £35 voucher for M&S , I have spent approx £240! So feeling good about that 50/50 between M&S and Tesco
