How much was your Christmas supermarket shop?

OutOfMyDepth86 · 21/12/2023 14:56

The prices are absolutely crazy this year, our supermarket shop is ridiculously expensive at £347! I have another delivery booked for New Year’s Eve but will make adjustments depending on what’s left over. We are a family of 5 not hosting Christmas dinner have the in-laws over on Christmas Eve where we will be having pizza counter pizzas with sides all of which is in the shop, the turkey/pigs/sausage meat stuff is not included in this total as is from the butchers.
AIBU to ask how much your Christmas shop was?

4 of us - no guests. Food Shop arriving tomorrow evening - From ASDA -

Reward coupons: £50
Initial basket: £120
actual spend after coupons: £70

Plus £18 at Lidl for £12 (leg of lamb), £6 approx (joint pork)

Shop includes - Christmas Day 3 meat joints for roast dinner, desserts, food supplies for week, cheeses, chutneys, chocolates, soft drinks, crisps, nuts, milk, bread, fruits etc.

Zero alcohol spend, we barely drink. DH has a
Couple of beers languishing in the fridge and I’ve got some gin for a drink on Xmas

AnotherCountryMummy · 21/12/2023 15:32

Probably about the same. £220 M&S food order (but the joint of beef was £80 ffs) and this also includes naice food for Xmas eve and boxing day. Plus another £150 on sainsburys, but again loads of extras that will last, such as chutneys and cheeses etc. It will all be eaten and enjoyed!

Family of 5 plus one guest for Xmas lunch and people dropping in over the few days.

FrenchandSaunders · 21/12/2023 15:34

£370 in Sainsbury's. Another £140 in M&S. Hosting 9 on xmas day and 6 Boxing day. Doesn't include a lot of booze as we have a separate delivery for that (Naked/Virgin).

Won't need to shop again until the NY though.

Ponoka7 · 21/12/2023 15:35

I've spent around £250 for food from Saturday to boxing day, for two of us. I've splurged because my DP was mid diagnosis, has had a poor quality of life this year and can't drink.

FuckingHellAdele · 21/12/2023 15:38

I'm up to about £350 and I've stopped counting.

Still got the meats to pick up from the butchers, plus the last minute booze run that I'll end up doing, because I've convinced myself that the copious amounts we've already purchased won't be enough

Floatinginatincan · 21/12/2023 15:39

Around £150 including booze. I just did a regular shop. We have a roast most weekend so nothing really different.

Luxell934 · 21/12/2023 15:42

£347 what the hell have you bought if that doesn't even include the meat?!

I think we spent around £150 but that includes turkey, trimmings, desserts, soft drinks, and a few snacky bits like crisps, cheese, biscuits, etc plus healthy food for our normal meals to last up until Christmas eve.

We don't drink alcohol though so I guess that saved us money.

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 21/12/2023 15:45

£314 online delivery, £285 for 2 meat hampers and trimmings, plus whatever I pick up tomorrow. I blame it on not having particularly great Christmases from the ages of 14 - 19 and making up for that ever since! I realise it's over the top, but I just get carried away and a lot of the meat will stay in the freezer until Feb/Mar - it's nice to still have a bit of festive food when the winter's depressing and dull!

When I was a kid, we had nothing, I was brought up by a single mum, she received no financial help from my father and it was tough. We were always the kids that went without - I definitely have issues related to that and I do go completely mad when there's an excuse to.

margotrose · 21/12/2023 15:46

We've just come back from doing ours - it was about £60 for two adults and that will last us from Christmas Eve until about the 28th. It included a bottle of Baileys.

But I got given loads of treats from my customers so we didn't have to buy any chocolate or biscuits etc.

Inextremis · 21/12/2023 15:50

€400 from Tesco - and there's only 2 of us (and a dog)! Most of it is bottles of spirits and wine though - which will last for the whole holiday period, and probably beyond.

Caledoniablue · 21/12/2023 15:56

Around 350€.

Admittedly a turkey crown costs a small bloody fortune where we live, but most of it went on booze, snacks and bits for when we have friends over, and all the extra trimmings for Christmas day as we are hosting this year for some close friends!

Icequeen01 · 21/12/2023 15:56

I've done the main Tesco shop which came to £536 but we got almost £200 off that with colleague discount and club card offers. This shop also included all my cupboard staples for the month including cleaning stuff and pet food (3 cats) but didn't include any alcohol. We get our turkey separately from our local farm and this will cost £90.

I am going to Sainsbury's tomorrow to buy the fresh stuff and would estimate spending around another £70. Alcohol we buy separately, mostly from our local vineyard as it is so good. All this is for 4 adults (Ds24 and DM84, DH and myself).

violetcuriosity · 21/12/2023 16:00

£200 from Aldi today- we are hosting Christmas breakfast and Boxing Day buffet. That included 10 bottles of wine!

QuiltedHippo · 21/12/2023 16:00

£130 with some discounts and vouchers
Then another £50 on bits and bobs couldn't get there

There was another £100 shop in November for booze and freezer stuff - also with discounts

Hosting 18 over xmas/boxing day

mambojambodothetango · 21/12/2023 16:00

About 300 too. Family of 4 with 2 extras on Christmas Day. We're also having a party on Saturday with about 20 people with alcohol and nibbles. I expect there to be lots of leftovers and that's basic food for the week too. Christmas Day itself probably costing £150 including turkey and champagne.

MangoPepsiLover · 21/12/2023 16:01

£95 but it's enough to last us until 4th January - 1 adult, 1 child (aged 8) - I will need to do a fresh fruit and veg and top up shop next week though

Dee03 · 21/12/2023 16:01

did my big food shop today and spent around £330 (including alcohol/drinks/pet food/cleaning stuff etc) but did get just over £60 discount....

Jk987 · 21/12/2023 16:02

That sounds ridiculous!
turkey = £50,
sprouts, carrots, parsnips 19p each (in Sainsbury's),
potatoes £2,
gravy, £3,
stuffing £2
Cranberry £1
Goose fat £3
Butter £2
Pudding £5
Booze £30
Xmas chocs £5
Cheese board stuff £20
= less than £150

Show us your list!

StaunchMomma · 21/12/2023 16:05

Currently sitting at 250 but by the time we've added alcohol we'll be over 300, for sure.

And we don't get the meat!

That does include picky bits for Xmas eve, a ham, cheese board, a few frozen desserts etc.

9 for Xmas day, 5 of us fed Xmas eve - day after boxing day.

Tippletoomany · 21/12/2023 16:05

I’ve been to different shops so I would hazard a guess between £300-£400 in the end. Only 2 on christmas day but 6 on christmas eve and the day after boxing day for two days. I always buy plenty for leftovers too so it’s not all just for Christmas day.

I have definitely noticed prices going up, I know waitrose is expensive but £5 for a packet of gravy this year!!

This is just for Christmas day though, not sure if OPs includes more than one day.

DahliaMacNamara · 21/12/2023 16:07

I spent £130 today, but I've been buying in drink and some freezable goodies over the last couple of months, so it's impossible to say. We never actually drink all the alcohol over Christmas, so some of that will take us through the horror of January.

loudbatperson · 21/12/2023 16:08

Mines around £320 at the moment, not including alcohol. That's for 4 adults and a teen, covering Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, as we always have a curry takeaway for Boxing Day.

It's a lot, but the meats make up £160 alone, and all veg is organic, meat products are higher welfare/free range etc.

Boomboom22 · 21/12/2023 16:09

I haven't been but writing my list.
Prob 200ish.

decionsdecisions62 · 21/12/2023 16:10

We've just spent £137 on wine and some cheese! Gawd 😩
