How much was your Christmas supermarket shop?

The prices are absolutely crazy this year, our supermarket shop is ridiculously expensive at £347! I have another delivery booked for New Year’s Eve but will make adjustments depending on what’s left over. We are a family of 5 not hosting Christmas dinner have the in-laws over on Christmas Eve where we will be having pizza counter pizzas with sides all of which is in the shop, the turkey/pigs/sausage meat stuff is not included in this total as is from the butchers.
AIBU to ask how much your Christmas shop was?

Thinking start in aldi then go to sainsburys if needed. Which it will be unless aldi has the right cheeses! And I need the free from ailse. But must do aldi first as the meat and trimmings will be half the price of sainsburys.

FoodieToo · 21/12/2023 16:15

About 400 euro. Plus another 200 in M and S. We have 5 teens .

Timeforanewnam · 21/12/2023 16:19

170 , however, I will need to double check he’s bought everything, as it’s the first time dh has been solely in charge of the Christmas food , but it looks like he’s done fairly well

Whaleandsnail6 · 21/12/2023 16:22

There will be 8 eating here on Christmas day. My food shop with 2 bottles of bucks fizz and pop for the kids came to £90 for Christmas dinner, cheese board and snacks for breakfast and sandwiches on the day.
I'll need to do a general weekly shop at some point and get some special bits in for Christmas eve. That can be tomorrows job, I got fed up!

ShinyBandana · 21/12/2023 16:23

I’ve just done £259 in Morrisons and I’m doing M&S tomorrow - still need a turkey. That’s family of 5 with 4 more coming to stay for 23-27 and a further 2 for Xmas day - so 11 for Xmas dinner. Guests are bringing 3 cases of wine a huge piece of beef and nice cheeses.

vanillafudgecake · 21/12/2023 16:23

Ours is £330 for a family of 5! We are also hosting the in-laws for a couple of days.

I've been gathering alcohol and bits on previous orders too and it doesn't include the Turkey and extra meats which I'm collecting from the butchers and cheese is coming separately!

Will last us through most of next week....hopefully!

UggyPow · 21/12/2023 16:23

Lol this is scaring me as I haven't done any shopping yet!!!! Not feeling well at all so nothing left in the fridge.
Order in at the butcher, we are lucky he will drop it off on his way home as he is a friend - will be approximately £100

Will be going to Aldi, Asda & Waitrose over the next few days & my daughter get home from Uni today so she will help......

sheflieswithherownwings · 21/12/2023 16:24

So far a $200 delivery and another click and collect on Saturday working out at around $150 probably, plus a $60 turkey from Waitrose.

We're hosting 9 people on Christmas day though and 12 on Boxing day. It is a lot but that amount of food should last until the new year - I tend to want to avoid the shops between Christmas and new year, so I like to stock up. It's the one time of year I really like to have a full freezer and cupboards.

Warwickshireisnice · 21/12/2023 16:25

No idea we’ve done it in dribs and drabs over the last few weeks

SecondHandFurniture · 21/12/2023 16:26

Does nobody else drip it over the previous month or so? We bought the wine 2 weeks ago when Sainsbury's did 25% off 6 bottles - approx £50. I did the "buffet food for lunches" shop for between now and Boxing Day today, at £50. The pork is frozen and we need the veg over the weekend plus more cheese - probably about £40. Snack foods like chocolates and stollen were bought in November and put away. I couldn't narrow down a total.

For 3 of us for food between now and Boxing Day - maybe £250?

TheWorstWeek · 21/12/2023 16:29

While my total is considerably less than some, I'm "pleased" to see I'm not the only one whose noticed the cost shoot up 🙈 the weekly shop (Fri-Fri) was £115 for 2 adults, 2 children, including christmas dinner for the four of us but minus two days when we wont need dinner as we are visiting family. And we'll have to restock milk, bread etc. at some point too so probably realistically more like £140-150. It was the same last week although we did throw in a few items for the food bank which probably worked out much the same as all the little bits for our Christmas dinner.

Iceache · 21/12/2023 16:31

£350 so far and I have until tomorrow evening to try and cut that down before my delivery on Saturday. It includes breakfast for 6, Christmas dinner & dessert for 6 and then cold meats etc for Christmas Night, as well as buffet bits for Boxing Day. I’ve mostly got wine etc sorted but have a few bottles of champagne in the order. I have no idea how anyone manages to get everything they need for like £100 😩

Iliketulips · 21/12/2023 16:33

Haven't added it up, but have taken roughly £40 on xmas day and a few extras like pickles, mince pies, brandy butter (excluding alcohol), the rest comes out of our weekly shop. Four of us xmas day - my Mum is bringing a couple of sweet things. We are at SILs Boxing Day lunch so don't need to think about that. We obviously have a much lower food budget than others, but I know we'd struggle to get through hundreds of pounds of food and drink unless we were have real treat food.

TeenLifeMum · 21/12/2023 16:33

£292 for 7 but we’re not here Boxing Day. I bought alcohol separately. It did include bits for new year too though. Normal shop is £200 a week minimum though.

housethatbuiltme · 21/12/2023 16:36

We spent £90 yesterday but that included non Xmas essentials too (pet food, nappies, standard weekly shop stuff etc...)

MidgeFragnets · 21/12/2023 16:42

About 45 on booze so far and about £6 on a pudding.

Will probably spend 45 on meat as there are only three adults and two kids and a dog to cater for (dog will get an Xmas dinner too).

I'm not going to go nuts this year as the kids have all the sweets and crisps in their stockings already. I will just get the meat, veg and food for the week (might cook something nice Christmas eve if I can be bothered) and will just get cheese and a shop bought pud. I usually make an elaborate homemade chocolate trifle with booze and cherries which can cost about 30 quid to make, but seems pointless for the five of us, so will just buy one for a tenner. Might get cheese too.

I'm expecting it to be around 20-130 for Christmas week food and household items with a voucher for £40, but hope its less and will be aiming for less. None of us are keen on a week long feast.

DGPP · 21/12/2023 16:47

£350 so far.. not finished yet. It does include booze

Madcats · 21/12/2023 16:48

We've given up buying turkey (especially now we're just catering for 3 of us). We're making do with a big free range chicken that will stretch to a pie and probably a curry. It was just under £15.

We'd probably have to pay close to £50 round here to get a free range turkey (crown). More importantly our meat will be cooked in about 90 mins, not a couple of hours, so we can have a relaxed morning.

Parapapampam · 21/12/2023 16:48

£400, that's for 16 people; breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks for two days.

Realised that doesn't include bits of non perishables I bought a few weeks ago, so probably nearer £450.

Motnight · 21/12/2023 16:52

£350. Not including booze. But it does have household stuff included. Hoping that it's enough food for 4 or 5 days for 3 of us plus a few guests popping in for drinks and snacks. It's a lot of money.

ruralwanderer · 21/12/2023 16:55

£15 😁 I shop through Top Cashback all year and save my nectar card points then come Christmas I convert all my points to coupons and cash out my TC earnings as a Sainsburys gift card. Together this year these measures made an enormous difference to a shop that would otherwise have cost over £150.

I have bought free range turkey legs this year which I am going to bone, stuff and roll. Only £14 for two legs from Field and Flower. Saved a fortune!

Nodancingshoes · 21/12/2023 17:01

About £150. Turkey, gammon and chicken, veg, puddings, drinks including some alcohol, j20s and 2 trays of Pepsi max, pringles, nuts, mince pies, cheese, crackers and pickles. Veg was 15p a bag in Tesco and I had 2 vouchers to use so paid about £40 in the end!

and drank 20 bottles of coke.

It's like the tiger who came to tea!

glossypeach · 21/12/2023 17:07

Mine was £180 for the two of us and we’re not even having Christmas dinner at home. I never spend that much on shopping but thought as it’s Christmas I’d treat myself and eat good for a week!
