Can anyone recommend a good scented candle? DD's friend is a fan and DD wants to gift her one for her upcoming birthday. Budget is up to £30, ideally a bit less.

We can't have them in our house as DH gets migraines from strong smells, so I have absolute no idea.

St Eval - lovely fragrances, not fake feeling, don’t make me sneeze (some do)

JewelleryCat · 29/09/2023 17:01

I really like the scented candles that Aldi do and it’ll be in budget 🙂

Remagirl · 29/09/2023 17:55

You need to pick soy candles from decent brands. The chemicals in a lot of the supermarket offerings are horrible and really bad for asthma, migraine etc.
independents on Etsy might be worth checking out. I'd rather have a tiny Jo Malone candle tbh x

I used to love Yankee Candles especially Sparkling Cinnamon ( so much nicer than Cinnamon Stick)
But the most recent ones I bought smelled like a wax crayon Xmas Envy

We don't use candles now (cats)

Neales Yard oils in one of those electric burner gadgets .(Cinnamon Oil with eithe Mandarin or Clementine Oil is Christmas )

St Eval winter thyme is a lovely winter or Christmas scent. I love their sandalwood, and orange and cinnamon too.

Lemonademoney · 29/09/2023 18:14

Daylesford do a nice candle and you can order them through Ocado (and they often have a discount code)

SmithfamilyRobinson · 29/09/2023 18:16

M&S do lovely candles especially at Christmas. They often have examples with little lights in - very affordable with nice seasonal scents.

Tk Maxx often have lovely candles reduced. Definitely worth a look.

St Eval Winter Thyme is my go-to winter candle. Their scents are lovely and the candles burn really well. Paddywax are also gorgeous - my absolute favourite is the Tobacco Flower one. I use St Eval throughout the year though as they are a bit more reasonably priced than Paddywax

Tequilamockinbird · 29/09/2023 20:09

Bath & Bodyworks are the strongest scented ones I've had. Next sell them online too.

Doobydoo · 29/09/2023 20:14

Agree re St Eval. I have tried many different brands. St Eval are my faves and my family are fine with them too...

Me too. Lovely. I don't shop there but go for the candles

FriedaMer · 29/09/2023 20:29

https://valentte.com/home-fragrance/candles/ - amazing value and gorgeous scented soy based candles. The candles burn down to nothing as well so there is no waste. Cardamon and Nutmeg is a lovely wintery scent.

Check out alfrechscent.co.uk/shop
It's a small business that hand makes amazing soy wax candles... the Mandarin, Basil and Lime smells just like Joe Malone! Christmas Spice is my absolute favourite though.
Everything I've bought has made our whole house smell lovely, even after they've finished burning!

The emissions from soy wax candles are the same as those from paraffin candles. This was proven by Danish scientists a number of years ago.
The controversial study in the early 90's stating that soy way is clean burning compared to paraffin was debunked. they admitted that they were paid by the American agriculture association to fudge the data.
What counts in a candle is the quality of the fragrance oil used. British and European oils are subject to very strict rules whereas the oils made in USA, China etc are not. Candle makers in the UK are banned from using a lot of the ingredients in Chinese oils but there is no ban on the supermarkets and cheap shops importing these Chinese candles. Because they are not made in the UK or Europe, I they don't even have to have the clp label with the allergens, hazards and warnings on.

Yes !
Back in the pre-cat days I loved sniffing the HomeSenseTKMaxx range but I did get noseblind after a while

Stompythedinosaur · 29/09/2023 20:48

My favourite is St Eval too, and I've had a nice Christmas candle from John Lewis too.

96NORTH Luxury Coconut Soy Candle | Large 3 Wick Jar Candle amzn.eu/d/4CXvHrz

I was gifted this one earlier this year & absolutely loved it, have repurchased since.

They do a few other scents too

OrangesLemonsLimes · 29/09/2023 21:26

St Eval. I’d never heard of them before but got a lovely one from my workplace Secret Santa last year.

Sparkletastic · 29/09/2023 21:33

White Company candles make a lovely gift. Especially if you buy in the shop and get the cute bag. Seychelles is a gorgeous scent.

Twitch45 · 29/09/2023 21:37

Northern Soul Scents - their candles are lovely!
