Thanks @snowmanshoes for the title!

Hello everyone, so nice to see you all. Pull up a chair, have a mince pie and a peppermint latte and share your Christmas bargains and ideas. In message two are the links and info from last year - if anyone has anything they'd like me to amend or add, please do tag me and I'll update.

A reminder not to post affiliate links in the thread but that MN do change amazon links shared by posters into MN affiliate links.

Please do watch the thread rather than post to mark place to make it easier for everyone to keep up and find relevant info.

A massive thank you to those who have contributed and/or run the prequel threads this year. I can't believe it's another year! I started these when DD was a baby and she's just gone into Year 8!

It might be worth looking on your local Fb selling pages, usually has some good quality ones cheaper than they are new. You could set it up and drape a Christmasy wrap/blanket over it to get around the fact it isn’t boxed.

Sorry message was to you, great idea

You're better off starting with a decent pair of binoculars*
Most telescopes for kids are pretty poor, and the tripod legs make them super wobbly.

*DS went with Cubs to an observatory where this recommendation was made.

Yep we have a pair of good binoculars but she wants to see more (her words)

Peabody25 · 16/09/2023 20:08

@happytobemrsg our DS has just turned 10, but he's been into coding for a h good few years now.

We've got him a Turing tumble but he's only really getting into it now. What he has loved is a subscription to Tynker, a subscription based coding website where he could make games, code robots etc and play games that other people have created.

He also really likes Super Mario Maker 2 for the Nintendo switch where you can code your own super Mario levels.

He also really liked reading Lift-the-Flap Computers and Coding: 1 amzn.eu/d/hxosUBi

happytobemrsg · 16/09/2023 20:58

Thanks for the ideas @Peabody25 ! Is Tynker similar to Scratch? Definitely have Mario Maker 2 on the list. I like the book idea also but I bought him Scratch books for his birthday but he’s not really been that interested. Prefers following tutorials from YouTube at the moment

Barbiefan · 16/09/2023 21:00

Looking for inspiration! DD not sure what she wants. She is 9. Likes craft and kits. Loves her iPad 🤦🏻‍♀️. What have you got for a girl this age that has been a hit?

WimbyAce · 16/09/2023 21:05

Was looking at winter coats on Trespass for the kids and they have an extra 20% code off at the moment. They sell various things so may be useful for gifts.

It's got all sorts of different coding methods, from simple block coding up to python and JavaScript. You pay about £100 for the year's subscription. www.tynker.com/

That was supposed to be a reply to @Hickry

Tbh I can't remember if they were vacuum packed or not! Is there a fee to return? I'm guessing there probably is.

I knew I wanted a proper oodie for me as I'm always freezing so I made sure mine was a print I could see had also been on the oodie website. The kids one I just ordered the cheapest in a colour I knew they'd like as there's didn't need to be as thick. They're like little human radiators, they must get it from their dad lol.

It's definitely worth checking the prints oodie do and then comparing them to what OHS site have.

The oodie and the cheaper ones are incomparable in my opinion. I'd never pay the full price on the oodie website though! 😱 but the OHS price for one is an absolute steal.

My dd is 9 and she really liked her iPad pencil (about £12 from amazon)
Earbuds (Belkin kids)
Japanese sweet making kit (Kracie)
Slime kit (unfortunately)
Diary of a wimpy kid books
Make and bake erasers
Posca pens & stuff to use them on

Peabody25 · 16/09/2023 21:38

@happytobemrsg some good book ideas here, including fiction ones. DS really likes the Agent Asha ones. Think they'd probably be too old for your DS to read by himself but ok for you to read to him? www.booksfortopics.com/booklists/topics/science-maths-computing/computing-gaming-coding/

Not desperately Christmassy but currently Disney+ is available for 3 months for £3 of clubcard vouchers if you fancy getting some Christmas classics on.

Thank you!! I need to renew in a couple of weeks so have exchanged the vouchers ready!

WimbyAce · 16/09/2023 22:48

Just reminded me on another thread my 8 year old has mentioned a magic set, any recommendations please?

Scout2016 · 17/09/2023 07:29

@WimbyAce I was going to say Melissa and Doug one too.

Theraffarian · 17/09/2023 07:47

@Hickry @Athlebad i think you might be talking about different sites . Onlinehomeshop sells the ones like sienna that you can get on Amazon, Debenhams etc . 5poundstuff Here sold the ones that people thought may have been oodie seconds. I didn’t buy so can’t confirm.

Blanket Hoodies

Blanket hoodies keeps you warm and cozy while lounging at home, having morning coffee outside, or at a sporting event, you can wear it for any camping or outdoor activities without having to take it off.

winewolfhowls · 17/09/2023 07:55

Thanks for the tip on the Turing tumble, perfect for one of mine!

50% off first few papergang subscription boxes at ooh deer but more importantly every so often they sell off the old boxes for less than half price and they are lovely. Can't see any at the moment but keep an eye out.

Just reminded me on another thread my 8 year old has mentioned a magic set, any recommendations please?

I have bought this magic set from Argos in the 2 for £30 deal. I can’t vouch yet for how good it is as it’s for DD2 for Christmas but it seemed like a good deal.

Georgieporgie29 · 17/09/2023 08:40

My DD12 is looking for a styling head where she can practice on the hair. She wants to be able to curl it so probably not a plastic hair type one. Can anybody recommend one? I’m thinking people at college must have ones that can have heat?

Beautifulsunflowers · 17/09/2023 08:45

The boots offer of half price brands a few pages ago looked good. I popped into my local boots thinking the offers would be in store but all the Christmas shelves were empty! So just a heads up to buy online.

I was going to say this! I have bought from both sites. The one from onlinehomestore isn't as thick, but my dd2 is only 11, petite and doesn't like the heaviness of the really thick ones. Still will be warm and cosy for her. And for £9 was a bargain! Primark ones were nearly £20 last year.

I got 2 from 5poundstuff last year, one came in an oodie bag (didn't end up worn much by dd1 as its too thick!) And the other was kuddly which I wore loads.

We also have the dunhelm ones, dd1 prefers it as its thinner, softer and doesn't have that white fleecy material but still pretty warm. I've washed and tumble dried them with no problems too!

BlairWaldorfOG · 17/09/2023 08:51

@Georgieporgie29 my daughter had one from Amazon you can use heat on. It came with a clamp to clamp it to the table and keep it sturdy too. I can't find it now but it was £40 and was a mixture of real and synthetic hair, I worried that it might not hold a curl being part synthetic but it does.

BlairWaldorfOG · 17/09/2023 08:54

Not so much Christmas present related but I'm desperate for some new induction hob suitable pots and pans, has anybody seen any good deals? I'd like a set built to last my last set were rubbish.
