Christmas

Oh no I've over spent massively

I feel such an idiot

A few weeks ago with our Tesco order we got the preorder food catalogue.

It looked yummy and so I picked out what I liked the look of and put it in my basket for the Christmas delivery. I have been asking my oh to go through it and make the choice, which trifle. Which cake. Which meat etc for a few days and now he's finished work he sat down to do it last night

Only to find out it can't be changed as it has already been ordered. The cost is horrendous but the waste is awful. There are two of us, no guests and we have several trifles, logs, cakes cheeseboards. Party food, joints of meat, all 8 portions! The intention was to choose one of each.

I felt ill when he told me, luckily he was calm about it. Christmas is gonna last into February at this rate. Please tell me I'm not the only one?

Donate what you can at least it won’t go to waste and you’ll feel better for making someone else’s Christmas a little less hard

If you can afford it then gift it someone else who might not have as much.

Can you call tesco and explain?
I've found their customer service to be excellent.

A lot of it will have long dates (biscuits and cheese etc) and a lot will be able to be frozen. Start eating the contents of your freezer to make space! Fish fingers from now until Christmas Eve Grin

Other than that, give as gifts to friends and neighbours and food bank where possible. Don't worry, it's an easy mistake to make and you won't do it again next year!

Cheese can be frozen.
If the meat hasn’t previously been frozen it can to.

Definitely give Tesco a call and see if they can help.

Call Tesco and see if they can help. If not, can you find a local food bank/Church/charity who can redistributeto families in need ?

First ring customer service
Second can you not return to store once delivered the items you don't want.

Some great ideas. We are looking at getting an additional chest freezer, and I can take stuff to food bank but it's not delivered until 4pm on Christmas Eve I just feel so stupid for not reading the small print. On the phone to them now

Put it on your local Facebook group. Someone unable to get a delivery slot may be happy to take it off your hands for close to the original price (or swap for something more useful).

Or can you get the things in store and then cancel the whole order?

I've never done a Tesco order so don't know how it works but surely you don't get charged for it until you have confirmed the order. If all the stuff was just in your 'basket' but you haven't paid for it can't you just cancel the whole thing?

Report
ClangingBell · 16/12/2022 10:23

I did exactly this one year. Strangely you can’t cancel the individual pre-order items but you can cancel the entire order. You just need to cancel the order.

Not for the Christmas to order food. You have until the 14th Dec to confirm and after that it is set and you can't add or remove. We fell foul of this when the Christmas covid restrictions came in and we couldn't change our turkey for 14 for a smaller one that the 3 of us would eat! We had a lot of turkey meals that year!

I ordered well in advance as soon as the slots were announced. You have check it out to keep your slot then you can normally amend Upto midnight the night before but apparently not for Christmas ⛄ orders.

Then I'll lose the slot I think

Freeze whatever you can, most things are freezable. Should keep you going a while!

Honestly, phone them up and grovel a bit 😂 . The earlier deadline is because they need to manage demand at the busiest time, but they may well be willing to help if they can. You can only ask...

Surely that's better than getting £££ of food you don't need?

That might be preferable. If you're only shopping for 2, it surely won't be that onerous to just go to a shop? Particularly if you've already picked out the exact items your want (I always find you need to go to a shop to buy the things that didn't arrive, anyway).

But does it matter if you lose the slot? There's only two of you. You could just go to the store and choose what you like the look of - the shopping would be done in a couple of hours.

I'm so confused why you wouldn't just cancel the order? Surely if it's only two of you you can just nip to the shop and get what you need when you need it?

Can you not hand some things back to the driver for a refund? I do that with Asda sometimes and the money goes back to my account. I just say I ordered them by mistake

If there’s only two of you just go to an actual shop and buy the food you need ? They’re all open …. Unless you can’t get to a shop ?

The Christmas hysteria never fails to amaze me. Shops close for one, maybe two days and most of us manage not to starve.

Report
TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 16/12/2022 11:22

I agree with everyone else - you’d rather spend all that money/potentially waste quite a lot of food than simply cancel the online delivery and spend an hour shopping in store instead??
