Refusal to buy “boring” gifts

Jinglebellsloth · 14/12/2022 07:22

My mother still likes to get me a few bits at Christmas, which is kind of her.

She asked me what I wanted for Christmas as she didn’t know what to get me.

I explained I didn’t really need any ‘gifts’ as such, but would love some useful things that I use everyday e.g. the brand of vitamins I like to take etc.

She had refused as she claims these are boring. I’ve tried to explain that I would much rather have that than some random stuff she’s picked and wrapped that I don’t need/want/use.

There must be something you can think of that isn't a jar of vitamins 😏

DenholmElliot11 · 14/12/2022 07:25

I agree with the PP. Just think of something else other than vitamins.

Whinge · 14/12/2022 07:25

I'm usually one for buying what a person would like, but even I would struggle to buy someone a tub of vitimins. Practical gifts are great, but surely there's something else you could ask for?

Jinglebellsloth · 14/12/2022 07:25

I also suggested some clear trays for my fridge but that didn’t go down well either 🤷🏻‍♀️

I was ready to take your side, but vitamins?

Blinkingmarvellous · 14/12/2022 07:26

Ask for nice bath/ shower products or choc. Things that usually can use

RambamThankyouMam · 14/12/2022 07:27

Really capturing that festive feeling and the joy of gift giving with... a box of multivitamins from Holland and Barrett 😩

everlastingpanini · 14/12/2022 07:27

I have clear trays for my frudge they are great. [off topic]

Do think of something nicer for her to buy. More special. She wants to treat you and feel good about it. I can recommend these- I live in mine and bought some for my DM

Just reinforces the
Pointlessness of adults buying each other gifts

Athenen0ctua · 14/12/2022 07:28

I hate nicnacs and useless presents. Wouldn't want to buy something the receiver regularly buys anyway though! That's like buying their shopping for them. Can you think of something you had been thinking about for a while but put off getting because of the additional cost? Something you will keep and remember she got you? Or if consumables, nice treat versions of food or toiletries?

Athenen0ctua · 14/12/2022 07:29

Namechangeforthis88 · 14/12/2022 07:25

I was ready to take your side, but vitamins?

Yep, me too!

closingscore · 14/12/2022 07:30

Hm. I mean I'm not a big fan of buying useless presents but I think you're being unreasonable here. I can always use new pyjamas, gin, or bath stuff, surely you could request something less "practical" than vitamins.

Mrsjayy · 14/12/2022 07:31

You want vitamins and fridge trays ? I wouldn't buy my dd those either, I'd give her money instead, would she give you money ?

KangarooKenny · 14/12/2022 07:32

I agree with PJ’s, chocs, alcohol. Very boring but will get used.

lifeinthehills · 14/12/2022 07:33

What about a book you'd like?

IglesiasPiggl · 14/12/2022 07:34

There is a quite a lot in between useless tat and boring daily shopping items! Or you could suggest a voucher for wherever you want to get the fridge shelves from. Theatre tokens? Cinema voucher?

MiddleParking · 14/12/2022 07:34

I agree with you OP. Good vitamins are more expensive than you might feel you could justify for yourself normally. I don’t see the problem with practical gifts at all, if it’s something you need/want it’s a good use of money and presents aren’t about what the gifter likes.

Ilikewinter · 14/12/2022 07:34

Well I totally get you OP! My christmas list consists of bath towels, tea and sugar jar and oven gloves.....all of which I've picked!
If theres nothing you want or need then whats the point in spending money on stuff that just gets shoved in a cupboard.
Can you ask for a nice box of chocolates 😊

AltheaVestr1t · 14/12/2022 07:34

Oh, don't make life difficult. Just think of something!

MiddleParking · 14/12/2022 07:35

AltheaVestr1t · 14/12/2022 07:34

Oh, don't make life difficult. Just think of something!

She’s made two suggestions. What could make life easier than that?

Mrsjayy · 14/12/2022 07:36

I just ask for pyjamas from my mum or a voucher,

All4Stars · 14/12/2022 07:37

A friend of mine asks for toothpaste. To be fair is an expensive (for toothpaste) one.

OP, there must be something else you'd like. Jewellery?

Brefugee · 14/12/2022 07:38

Wouldn't want to buy something the receiver regularly buys anyway though

if someone really wants me to buy them things they usually get, i upgrade it. So vitamins? get the best money can buy. Plastic trays for the fridge? the best that are available. etc. Socks? really lovely silk socks or something like that.

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/12/2022 07:40

I’d happily buy you vitamins 😁 or fridge shelves, but I think you have to respect that she wants to buy you a treat - you can surely think of jeans / lampshade / jumper / cheese subscription / fancy corkscrew / trainers / duvet set. that you would like but wouldn’t get for yourself.

TheEvening · 14/12/2022 07:41

I'm with you OP. I like things I can use! I remember years ago my colleagues being horrified DH had bought me a sat nav but I was absolutely delighted.

Is there anything where you can think of a more luxury version of something you'd use? Or some treat food/drink?
