Am I a miserable cow?

Does anyone else thinking Christmas goes on forever now?

Been away at the weekend and all the bars/restaurants were decked out (which was lovely) yet the Christmas markets weren't open.

I just think it's getting out of hand. No one used to put their decorations up in November. As my nana would say "people will think you're not right" but now it's the norm?

By time Christmas comes round I'm done with it and the excitement/festive feels isn't the same!

It annoys me that’s there’s Christmas songs on the radio

LadyKenya · 20/11/2022 19:21

Yanbu.

Tisfortired · 20/11/2022 19:21

I am boycotting everything Christmas related/themed until 1st December, tree going up on the 4th. I even think that is a little too early!

Suzi888 · 20/11/2022 19:22

I love Christmas, but agree it’s too early. Should be from Dec 1st.

Porcinimushroom · 20/11/2022 19:23

I’m in my early fifties for as long as I can remember shops and bars etc have had Xmas dec ups at this time. That doesn’t mean it’s the norm in homes. I mean a minority do but it’s not the majority

floppybit · 20/11/2022 19:32

As soon as the summer holidays are over people start talking about Christmas, a few neighbours have their devs up, it's taking up 20% of the year!!

floppybit · 20/11/2022 19:33

Decs up, not devs

Idontdoyoga · 20/11/2022 19:42

I no longer “do” Christmas and all my family are ok with that. I avoid looking at anything festive for as long as I can. I avoid being captured by the tv adverts & none of us exchange gifts anymore. However we do buy gifts throughout the year which we all enjoy.

I do make a lovely celebration meal & all are invited but nobody worries if A.N.Other decided to do their own thing.

I do put up a small tree at the last minute & it’s always down before 12th night!

I loath all the Christmas cookery programs on tv & magazine suggestions for home made fare & party dresses. Who, particularly this year can afford all the ingredients or has time to make all this glorious food? Who is going to a party and will buy the “must have” sparkling party dress? Too much subliminal pressure.

Does anyone realise what Christmas is really about anymore? Do children understand about Jesus and his birth? How many cards depict the Holy Family? How many of us turn up for communion on Christmas Day?
I’ll grit my teeth & wait for it all to go away.
Bahumbug!

amiold · 20/11/2022 19:44

Glad it's not just me. The house down from has lights all over and three trees (that I can see) how can they be arsed

custardbear · 20/11/2022 19:44

I'm not bar humbug but I do prefer Christmas in December. I hate decorations up after new year but rarely get around to taking them down early lol 😆

vitahelp · 20/11/2022 19:45

I agree it is early but I can’t find it in me to be bothered if others are putting up decorations..however if anyone in my own household were pushing to have decorations up early in our house I’d be a bit fed up.

sanityisamyth · 20/11/2022 19:46

I hate Christmas and always have done. Never looked forward to a single one.

That's what Christmas means to you but Christmas in this country is as much cultural as it is anything else. Christianity hijacked an ancient midwinter festival and the traditions around it are a mishmash of stories, one of them being the relatively young story of a baby who almost certainly wasn't born in December.

I found a Mumsnet thread from 20yrs ago complaining about Christmas being everywhere in mid November. It's been this way forever.

I adore Christmas and yet wait until December 1st to start celebrating. It's easy enough to avoid.

AuntieStella · 20/11/2022 19:49

Yes, I think that before Advent Sunday (27th Nov) is too early for full-on Christmas stuff.

I get that retailers will want to start early, but really don't like seeing massive gaudiness until after Remembrance Sunday.

But I do wish they'd keep decorations up until Twelfth Night! Cutting the festival short always seems curmudgeonly. And lights and glitter helps lift the gloom of that first week in January

I think they take them down because they've had them up since start of nov so they're sick of them

And yet you, and others on this thread, are in the Christmas section???

dammiejodger · 20/11/2022 19:58

I am already looking forward to January. Christmas is overwhelming as it is without extending it further. YANBU. I think I am a miserable cow, though! 😂

I agree with this, very well put!

KendrickLamaze · 20/11/2022 20:00

We were going to put them up today but just pulled them out of the garage. I blame covid for it tbh. In the first year of covid, it was so shit that everyone put their decorations up early to feel better. I was aghast when DD suggested putting them up mid November but I think most people now just think "fuck it. Life's too short" and have something pretty and festive to look at. I've done that each year since.

Totally agree.

I'm not against Christmas but I miss the hustle and bustle and the last minute running about. Twinkly lights and carol singing etc (I'm early 30s by the way, this isn't a everyone's wrong because back In my day thing)

oofmehip · 20/11/2022 20:06

I’m just here for your nana’s quotes 😂

Haha 😂 she got worse as she got older.. she said something once (won't divulge) and I quickly replied "you cannot say that" she said "why not. Can say what you want if it's right" 🤦🏼‍♀️

KnottyKnitting · 20/11/2022 20:07

One of my Facebook friends has posted a picture of her tree and decorations today- it's the 20th November FGS!

No you’re not miserable OP. I love Christmas but I feel the same. I think the first week in December is the earliest that Christmas lights and decs should go up
