Nearly 16 year old boy wants "things to make his new bedroom look less bare"

Rainbowshit · 17/11/2022 22:13

He has what is essentially a newly built bedroom after some building work in our house.

It looks very white and bare.

All I can think of is a cool bedside light.

He talked about posters but he's not really into anything. So struggling to think of anything He's a bit on the geeky side.

All suggestions welcome.

What about shelves for stuff instead of going down the poster line. We have shelves of LEGO and Funko Pop models.

CassandraBarrett · 17/11/2022 22:15

Rug, armchair, cushions, blankets
Cool posters in frames.
Floating shelves with photos/pictures

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 17/11/2022 22:16

can you liven it up with a bit of colour. A house we rented had a boys bedroom with one feature wall in dark blue and another in lime green, the rest were white. Sounds horrible but looked lovely. Or graffiti?

snowmanshoes · 17/11/2022 22:16

How about those scratch posters - 100 movies/songs/books etc or a world map scratch map? Colour changing bulb - yes 16 year old lads like these too! Or go to hmv you can get 3 posters for £12 and there is a random selection.

carefulcalculator · 17/11/2022 22:17

I bought some fabric related to a hobby and we made a banner, that looks pretty good, massive world map, plants, nice clock, whiteboard.

Annabananna1 · 17/11/2022 22:18

Posters framed, maybe featuring his fave films? Framed photos.

Some cool lights, neon maybe.

Paint it another colour, dark green?

Book shelves.

Study area with nice desk and spinning chair

Beamur · 17/11/2022 22:18

Shelves.
Prints.
Lighting - lamps, LEDs, lava lamps!
Rugs, bean bags.
Postcards - you can get themed 'aesthetic' packs on colour themes which can look nice.
Mirror.
Plants

My DSS17 when he did his room last year had thin shelves with a ledge and uses them to display records.
He has a number of these framed on his wall.

Then one of his favourite songs on a pic like this.

He also has light strips on his desk etc

parietal · 17/11/2022 22:19

Definitely shelves for models / objects.

And lots of posters - easy to change around if he changes his mind.

Giant wall map?

Sarahemmabrown · 17/11/2022 22:19

Big house plants

Letmedowneasy · 17/11/2022 22:20

LED light strips, they are self adhesive strips you can change the colour with a remote. Bit more difficult if he's not into things but my DS gets photos from Free Prints of album covers that he likes and then makes a collage in a large ikea frame.

Takingabreakagain · 17/11/2022 22:22

DD has just bought some empty A4 chunky frames from Dunelm for her uni room. She's going to print out pictures (of things, places etc not necessarily photos) to put in them. She's thinking she can change them quite regularly so the room looks different

Kanaloa · 17/11/2022 22:24

Why is he ‘a bit on the geeky side?’ What is it he’s into that’s geeky? If it’s comics or gaming then framed posters or art to reflect that would be cool. If it’s Lego/collecting figures then shelves to display.

Pickledsprouts · 17/11/2022 22:24

Ikea do large pictures and can change the feel of a space - I just checked though and they seem to be more expensive than they used to - they have a wall map and quite a lot of pictures of bridges.

A neon sign?

You can get niche posters for almost any interest.

If he is a bit geeky but doesn't seem to be into much - could that be the problem? he hasn't found his interest yet? I would cosy up the room a bit but leave space for him to add more gradually and hopefully he will start to find his thing.

Leeds2 · 17/11/2022 22:37

New bedding.

Beanbags.

Zosime · 17/11/2022 22:37

Curtains?

Cork board where he can pin up photos, postcards, any other memorabilia that he fancies - ticket from an event he enjoyed, that kind of thing.

2023 Calendar with pictures on a theme he likes.

It looks very white and bare

Hasn't it got any of his clothes strewn around? 😁

goingback · 17/11/2022 22:40

need to unearth his personal geek, does he game- could set up a gaming rig. take him to your local geek or alternate shops and see if anything sparks an interest.
my ds has gone through lego and funko star wars and seems to be moving into Anime and Cosplay

RagzRebooted · 17/11/2022 22:41

My 16 year old has asked for a Terraria poster in a frame, to go above his computer desk. Is yours into any particular games?

Talipesmum · 17/11/2022 22:42

Displates posters are printed on metal and are very cool. Lots of great designs. Star Wars options linked here: displate.com/sr-artworks/star-wars
They are pricey but there’s always a discount code around.

Very cool bedside lamp:

(sorry giant link)

DotDotaDash · 17/11/2022 22:44

A3 poster of his favourite game in a frame? Pokemon here but could be whatever.

6 A4 Plastic wall frames with 6 cool magazine covers in. Beans here but could be whatever.

A display shelf for something he’s proud of or has achieved. Lego models here, could be a picture of winning a prize a birthday present a cool cactus plant etc

SeaToSki · 17/11/2022 22:52

Another vote for displates…my geeky boys and girl love them. Just let him choose them (maybe give a voucher)

A hanging basket chair thingy, if you cant hang it from the ceiling, you can get a stand

Rainbowshit · 17/11/2022 22:59

Wow! Was really not expecting so many responses. Thank you all! Will browse through them.
