Nearly 16 year old boy wants "things to make his new bedroom look less bare"

Rainbowshit · 17/11/2022 22:13

He has what is essentially a newly built bedroom after some building work in our house.

It looks very white and bare.

All I can think of is a cool bedside light.

He talked about posters but he's not really into anything. So struggling to think of anything He's a bit on the geeky side.

All suggestions welcome.

how about the Magnetic Wall Marble Run

blog.adafruit.com/2021/03/10/modular-magnetic-marble-run-made-from-laser-cut-wood-that-sticks-onto-metal-surfaces/

(I wish I had had this as a geeky teenager).

vipersnest1 · 17/11/2022 23:14

A bespoke neon sign.

Jellybean23 · 17/11/2022 23:19

The Works are selling world maps for £3. size 40inches x 54inches.

TicTac80 · 17/11/2022 23:24

I spotted some really cool Star Wars rugs on the Ruggable website, I was thinking of getting one for my DS once I revamp his room.

Puffalicious · 17/11/2022 23:24

Some great suggestions. I painted a big stripe diagonally across the ceiling and onto the adjoining walls- very effective and cheap. Left one wall white for DS to 'doodle' on- he's a keen cartoonist. Framed 'Stranger Things' poster, rug, cushions, funky bedding. Done.

Cactusprick · 17/11/2022 23:33

Plants & a neon wall light with a quote he likes perhaps?!
one of the picture shelves (they do them in ikea). We put two next to each other to look like one long one spanning the length of the wall, painted the the wall under the shelf a mossy sagey green colour and then propped shelves and hanging plants on the shelves

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 17/11/2022 23:59

Mine have Ikea MOSSLANDA picture ledges on one wall, one above another, about 60 cm apart. Really easy to put up things on display; models/smaller lego projects, artwork they made, frame posters, string lights, vintage album covers, nice looking books/graphic novels, whatever, and the re-arrange as they please as and when.

DS is recently obsessed with a car brand so he has a car poster plus three logo'd (clean) hub caps on the wall, some strip lights around his desk, and two of those multi-frames with pictures of him & his mates doing various sports.

And a floordrobe 😀

Pinboards: on Amazon there are 3 that are like different speech bubbles.

FiscalDragQueen · 18/11/2022 08:29

LED lights round door, desk
Wooden cubes as shelves to put things in, and on
Metal posters from Displate
Funko pops
LED Neon sign
Rug, cushions, duvet

Does he like Lego? What about a Lego Bonsai (or real one), or the Van Gogh Stary Nights to make and go on shelves?

LtJudyHopps · 18/11/2022 10:22

Band posters
Lyric posters
Wall stickers?
Prints from places like Desenio - there are some really nice photo ones of e.g. the ‘Harry Potter’ train weaving through countryside
Neon sign of his name or a slogan he likes?

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 18/11/2022 11:22

You could get him a few things to open (lamp/shelves/throw or rug), and then give him an IOU for a certain amount to choose extras (posters/prints/etc) in the NY sales. That might be better as he can pick things he actually likes - I always think it’s a bit risky to pick decorative items on behalf of someone else unless you really know their tastes well.

I was going to say Displate too 😁

they always have 30% discounts doing the rounds so don’t pay full price.

Rainbowshit · 18/11/2022 11:57

Displates seem very popular and they have a Black Friday deal on at the moment so will get him a big lebowski one.

You've reminded me that we bought him LED strip lights a couple of years ago, will need to see if we can get those out. Liking the idea of a neon wall sign.

He has loads of Lego on display already.

Great ideas so far, given me lots of ideas and things I hadn't heard of.

We had this with DS. In the end, the thing he likes the most is his lava lamp!

Useyourname · 18/11/2022 12:35

Steel notice board - or just sheet of steel attached to the wall? Sounds weird but you can get cut it in any size, it's got a cool industrial vibe and then you can use it like a corkboard, get a bunch of magnets to attach pictures/postcards/posters, or fridge magnet type things with logos, or even get some of those kids letter magnets and use them to write messages, song lyrics.

How can he be on the 'geeky' side but not be into anything? geeky litrally means 'knowledgeble and interested in things'.

Posters seems the obvious choice, posters dont even have to be of anything 'topical', I had the illusion posters as a teen that looked like they where moving.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 18/11/2022 14:21

Cord boards are ideal.
A tall bookshelf
Big cushions to make bed look like a divan

I8toys · 18/11/2022 14:48

Redbubble is really good for quirky posters/art. My son wanted political posters - don't ask.

Happenchance · 18/11/2022 14:58

A projector (and projector screen), a full length mirror, wall gym equipment.

LaTangerina · 18/11/2022 15:37

Postcard collage?
Just type that into amazon, a huge selection comes up. I've bought some for my teens too.

Thank you for the Displate recommendation! I've found one featuring Mick from Wolf Creek which seemed quite niche but my 16 year old will love it (we recently watched the films - well, I endured them! - but he liked them)
